People have been raving about these budget colored pencils claiming that they are as good as FaberCastel Polychomos but are they? I'll put them to the test in today's review!
I purchased the Deli pencils under the brand Star Joy, make sure you select the 72 count set in the tin if you want the Deli pencils, the other size sets are from a different manufacturer I understand. This is the set I bought: amzn.to/3iszLBZ Other sellers have it as well on Amazon at a higher price. Affilate link used.
First let's start with the similarities to polychromos pencils:
*layers well
*nice color payout
*Same fimness of lead
*resists breaking
*no snapping or crumbling of lead when sharpened to a fine point
*Thick lead like Polychromos
Now let's see what is different:
*Deli pencils have a bit more drag, less smooth (not scratchy tho)'
*Polychromos has a more natural color palette where this Deli/StarJoy has more vibrant colors. There are several "samey" peaches and other redundant colors and it leaves out other useful colors. The bight pinks and purles in the deli/starjoy palette are different than Polychomos and probably not lightfast if that is a concern for you.
*I couldn't build up as much rich color on smoother paper as I could with polychromos
*Polychromos has a richer and more natural palette as opposed to Deli
*Deli pencils are very water reactive where polychromos are mostly water-resistant.
*Price: Deli is about 36 cents a pencil and Polychromos os about $2.26 sents in sets.
*Polychromos is vailabe open stock and deli is not as far as I know.
Bottom Line: I think these are a decent pencil for the price and they do feel and behave like a polychromos. I'd recommed them to people who are learning or creating work that dosn't have to be lightfast (non fading in light) and want a cheaper pencil to practise with. They have a harder lead and will resist breakage over a softer pencil. That said I prefer a softer pencil myself so these won't be a favorite for me but that dosn't mean they are bad. If you want to try these out as a "poor many polchromos" you can get the feel of a similar pencil but for the same price you could buy a small tinof polychromos or some open stock polychromos and honestly I'd probably recommend that over a budget set (if you have professional ambitions with these pencils) shrsl.com/33thk *It is more work to use fewer colors but it will make you a better artist. That said if you work in adult coloring books or are colorign small rubber stamped images a larger budget set might be more practical.

Thanks for the great review as always! Your positivity always brings warmth to my heart especially with more and more negativity online theses days. Deli has been the most popular stationery brand in China from at least 20 years ago and they only started making higher end art supply recently as China gets richer. Before they were mostly making kids stuff comparable to Cryola. Just think you might like to know.

Ohhh this is so interesting. I love getting context like this from people who live in the country of origin and can give details we wouldn't know otherwise. I appreciate the context. I got these pencils and I really like them. Good to know that they may be bringing more higher end products to market.

Thank you for the wonderful videos Lindsay! I really trust your reviews and find you informative and funny to boot. I bought these based on Lori's (Color My World) review of them. I don't tend to use them very much because, like you, I like softer pencils. But you had some really good tips in this review, so I might be busting them out again. Thank you for all your hard work!

Great review Lindsay. I actually bought Deli first because I wasn't all that keen on the few open stock Poly Chromos I had, but then I started to work with Deli and improve my oil pencil technic and decided to buy the whole Poly Chromos set. I really appreciated using Deli during that learning time period which was almost two yrs. I now like to use Poly Chromo and Prisma together. I don't like using either by themselves and prefer using pencils like Luminance and Holbein because they are more a mixture of oil and wax. I still use Deli to practice when I don't want to waste my professional pencils. I like them a lot for a budget pencil, but I would say my budget Cezanne's are better, but only slightly,

Nice review! I am not in the market for budget pencils and I have plenty of better quality supplies as far as pencils go, but I could not help but but those square pencils that you raved about, I just wanted to see how accurate your experience translated to mine. You were spot on with your evaluation. I am never going to create artwork with sub-standard supplies ever again. I am doing some coloring book work to keep my eye hand coordination skills and I do not need permanent colors for that! Thank you for sharing your opinions on these pencils and I look forward to seeing your next watercolor video.

Unfortunately, your reviews always cause me to spend more $$$ because they spark joy in my hoarder habit. I too am a Prismacolor girl and love soft cores but I do surprisingly enough love my polys. The color selection for these ones def seem odd. I love your reviews. I took your advice (as usual) and bought 1 Prismacolor pencil the other day at Hobby Lobby. A white one. It is the best white pencil and can be used for almost application where I need a white pencil. I even used it to mark on that black tee shirt before I started. I needed to mark the center to apply my lettering. It worked. Shirt turned out just the way I had it pictured!! Thanks for this review. Just clicked your link for these pencils, and they are $23.99 US, and are available. But I already have too many pencils! My favorites are still my Prismas, and I have all of them. I also have 2 great art stores near me, and can get open stock easily. I also watch for the Prismas 72 set, as they go on sale more often than other sets, and I keep them as "spares" and refill my pencil wallet with pencils from the sets. I currently have 2 sets to use this way. I just purchased all the sets of Black Widow pencils, and while i am not a fan of harder pencils, these blend and layer well, and the color range is amazing. Great review Lindsay!

while deli is well-known in china, i'd definitely pin them as more of an affordable office supply/stationery brand than an art supply brand! though many chinese stationery brands typically offer some variety of art supply due to the vigorous demands of chinese kids and art students :') in the chinese art community, the red packaging faber castells are typically recommended as a beginner colour pencil. funnily enough, red fc retails for about 3x the price deli (72pcs) in chinese markets. so to see them compared to the tippity top of the faber castell line , polychromors has really peaked my interest! might get a set just to get a feel for it myself :D

Thank you for this useful review of pencils that have received a lot of attention from colorist. I think the most important factor in choosing colored pencil brands is what you are doing with them: original artwork meant to be displayed or coloring book pages. For coloring books lightfastness does not matter and whatever is comfortable and performs to your liking is fine. I think prismas are great for color books. But the hands down winner for original work is Polychromos, which is, in my opinion, the best all around color selection of any artist grade pencils.

As far as coloring and blending they would but if you want to display them and not worry about fading consider the 24set of Derwent drawing as they are very lightfast and while it would be more expensive that the 120 set of Bruts it isn't too bad being only 24 muted earthy tones.

These work great for practice, coloring books, etc. I bought the 120 for $27. They have definitely saved me some money replacing pencils in my expensive sets I used for commission or art work I sell. They are more waxy and lack some of the colors that polys, Luminance, DLF have. I have a $22 160 oily brutfuner set and they seem to have colors the SJ is lacking (esp muted skin tones). But hey, at the cheaper price, worth it all day long. I have used Brush and Pencil Final Fixative on some of the finished practice pieces but haven't had a problem with the color running (but I hold the fixative back 2 feet and do light layers allowing to completely dry in between)

Should be interesting

I compared it to the Goldfaber, also by FC, and those do it, too, but only some colors and not as much. And the worst pencils (as I have experienced) for being exposed to water are the Colorsofts and that is such a shame, since they are such lovely pencils for mixed media. But hey, at least it's better to find this out by testing it, than by actually using them on a piece and then watching in disbelief as they start to melt and smudge. As for a Poly dupe, or any dupe for any famous art supply... I think that in many cases it is possible to find something that is definitely a worthy substitute for the supply in question, but in most cases it is pretty impossible to find something that is the same. If one has very exact specifications, it's probably best to just get a smaller set of the original. But that's just my personal opinion. And besides, as a serious Koh-i-Noor fangirl I am biased anyways, and I will always tell everyone who is looking for an affordable great pencil to just get those, lol.

Hi people. Could someone answer me this!!!! What can we do to prevent the writing on the colored pencils to fade away? I have some Prismacolors that I can't see the name or number cause is all faded. Some still have a long life ahead of them, so I taped a little paper with the number on it so I'll know which one Im using. But what can I do to prevent the rest from fading?!... This has happened with some of my Prismacolors, BUT WITH ALL MY DELIS..... and I love my Delis but now I can see the numbers and they look so sad! Anyone has any ideas to prevent this fading from happening?! Maybe a little clear nail barnish?! Or would that ruin the wood?! Help please.

Lindsay, Those aren't Star-joy pencils. Those are Deli. It's two different companies, but HG Legend (Andy) sells them both. HG Legend is both a manufacturer and a distributor. It's the way they do it in China. It's what makes everything so confusing. They have a Star-joy pencil set. In a few weeks the new Star-Joy Gold Edition will be out. I'll try to make sure you get a set. The Star-joy pencils are much different than these. First they are a 3.3mm core. The new Gold will be a 3.8 which is like the Prismacolor. More info will go out soon.

@@thefrugalcrafter I know and that's because Andy can't change it. He tried and it made things worse. So I try to just tell people. The company is HG Legend. The pencils they sell (among many) are Deli and Star-joy. The Deli are manufactured by the Deli Corporation. The Star-Joy are manufactured by Andy. That's why we went with the name Star-joy gold edition so people know it's Andy but not the same as the original star joy. China makes understanding these things hard. It's different other places.

They certainly look like Polys, though I'd agree there are some important colours missing. I like the plastic sheet protector, that's a nice addition. There are so many pencil sets coming out these days; it's rather overwhelming. Not that Australia gets anywhere near all of the brands that are available to the US!

The Deli colours on the cupcake sketch look more 'sugary' - like the Arteza sets - than Polychromos. They do still seem like a good balance between quality and budget-friendliness for a beginner, though. 😊

Also the oily claim doesn't mean it's made from oil (though some use a cheap vegetable oil, others can easily be wax) and is more of a translation/language issue. They're just trying to call it blendable, and sometimes softer core. It's just marketing and unless they say oil-based the word oily is as meaningful as putting "worlds best" on something or "no trans fats" or any other trendy marketing. I guarantee you most oily pencils are a mix of wax, clay, and vegetable oils. It makes more sense if you speak mandarin.
