Braille Skateboarding

You know that weird feeling of Deja Vu you get walking into a store and everything you see was popular when you were in middle school (I am looking at you Urban Outfitters and Target)? Well that is how I feel at the skate parks recently. What do you think about these super old school shapes being back in style, is it a short trend or are they here to stay??

We used to skate tiny wheels like that between 1990-1995. Mostly because where we lived there were no skate shops or parks or anywhere to buy skateboards. So when we found wheels, they went with us through Jr. High to High school etc. And they were smaller wheels to start back then but they wore down so much over the years and it became a sign of pride, experience and cool factor at school if you had tiny wheel because you'd think, man that guy skates a lot.

I started skating in 1986, that shape is about 1990-91, as I had the Tony Hawk Medallion board. The smallest wheels I remember were 38 mm and called bearing covers, and they came out around 1992. I had 44 mm Spitfire wheels, and thought those were small. If I still skated I would ride that board.

I don't know about those wheels, but yes, we old guys are getting back into skating, and the shaped boards are wide. This makes it much more forgiving to us. Most of us aren't looking for flipping tricks, so big shaped boards allow us to carve and to basic skating while feeling stable on the board.

Boneite! I was just thinking about that the other day but couldn't remember what that layer was called. I remember a friend showing me his board and how it had boneite, but I didn't think much of it. Back then, for me, Powell Peralta was the mainstream brand, so never interested me.

That deck looks roughly late 89 - 91 ish. Looks like it could be an H Street or super early World Industries shape. It still has the shaped thing, but larger noses were being developed for better nose slides around then. That weird football shape came in around after that, which didn't last long.

I just goof around at the local park these days, got back into skating again in my mid 30s, now 42 and I'm back on shaped boards, it's what I started on, I much prefer them to popsicle boards. I don't really flip my board at all these days, I much prefer the width and shape of a board like this, or even earlier like the Santa Cruz Roskopp face or Corey OBrien Reaper, they were 2 of the boards I had as a kid, really want to grab reissues of them to hang on the wall.

Stoked to see how fun this looks in the video. I just bought a couple decks on sale, one each for my partner and myself. Marketed as cruisers, but with a short wheel base and nose and tail kicks, similar to this but with slightly smaller noses. We are just learning to ride and thought they looked like a bit of fun, something to ride over the rough asphalt around here, didn't even think of putting on smaller wheels and using them at a park.. looks fun! True but the small wheels back then weren’t this shape. These are more like worn down modern wheels as they’re wider.

I've been riding welcome shaped boards for the last 7 or 8 years, started with the Nolan Johnson neon green with a pink 3 legged rocking dog graphic. That board was wiiild.
