This episode is part 2 of my series on installing dinghy davits for my Albin 27 pocket trawler restoration. Dinghy davits are used to raise and lower a small rowboat or dinghy from your trawler or sailboat. This episode I restore and install Bremer 300 Aluminum Dinghy Davits.
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs. And when all else fails, I tell stories of boat motivation.

The aluminum shavings are called swarth by machinists some people call them filings also and you can locate hole to drill thru multiple materials with transfer punches

When drilling stainless steel, low RPM and lots of downward pressure is needed. Keep cutting fluid on the bit at all times; heat is what dulls drill bits. If the drill bit gets hot enough to not hold comfortably in your fingers for a few seconds, it's too hot.

Good going Joe! I was glad to see you used etching primer--otherwise that paint would come right off. (You know how I know that.) It may not matter because the davit bases look pretty substantial, but are they marine grade aluminum (e.g. 5086)? You probably don't have to worry about electrolysis in that application, but you may want to consider using silicone or plastic washers to isolate the SS bolts, washers and nuts from the aluminum. Good going on the SS backing plates. On another note, is that peeling paint on the shop door jam? You may have a moisture issue. I'm with you on the Craigslist bargains: I got a nice shiny Fortress anchor for $50. And I get most of my fenders there. (Who cares if they look like !@$%? You can clean and paint them. And if you don't they're boat fenders! They're supposed to get beat up and if they are no one will steal them.) Anyway, I hope you don't mind my nitpicking because it was another great project.

Drilling aluminum and cutting aluminum can be done with simple wood working blades and practically any drill bit but steel is a different animal you need high quality hard and sharp bits to get that job done turning them slow and using a cutting fluid or a coolant preserves the life and hardness of your bits it doesn't hurt to use the peck drill method and allow the bit to cool off a little as you are working with it also what destroys the bits is forcing them to get so hot that the oil is smoking by trying to make it all the way thru a material without allowing them time to cool off at all.

Right on I feel your pain 🥹I probably should discuss this in an episode down the road again. This is why I wear same ratty shop clothes and leave them behind in a staging area. The contaminates from grinding or cutting fiberglass and metal and plastic just track everywhere. 😁👍thanks for the comment

I used to wear Redwing Irish Setters to work. As soon as you walked anywhere NEAR swarf, the soft soles picked up all the needle-ish bits they could.

About the time drill bits got coated with titanium, or plutonium. I have used coated drill bits with AMAZING success drilling heavy steel truck frames. Then suddenly the coating is worn off and the rest of the drill bit is made from red-licorice!!!

Why would you ever have to be ( or want to be ) in the dingy when raising or lowering in and out of the water? Seems very unstable. Why not just secure to the Albin and step in and out of.
@motorcityboatwerks

😂 Lol. 😳You don’t sit in the dinghy when using the davits! 😂😆 I appreciate the comment but I think you missed the joke Calvin. 🐙 The purpose of the swing test is to demonstrate that the davits can hold a certain weight. Please watch the prior videos and take a moment to understand what I’m doing in the Boat Werks. Be sure to like and subscribe 👍😁
