After over twenty years building fiberglass boats, I never thought I would say this: An aluminum boat seems like a much more secure and safe boat for the kind of sailing this couple does. And it seems that the builder has been able to make this boat stylish and comfortable in ways I did not think possible.

Aluminium also has the advantage that you can weld things on the boat instead of having holes going to the interior of the boat 🥰

Agree, but one thing to remember, though, is that KM and Bestevaer is not cheap! Aluminium is a great material, but takes more work per boat.

Despite all its advantages, I would never choose an aluminum boat for long-term use. Aluminum boats are like newborn children they demand attention 24/7/365 otherwise they will be the most unsafe boat. That's why no one keeps Aluminum boats, they are sold after the planned trip is over and they go back to wooden/composite boats.

Aluminium boats react, and sometimes quite strongly, to stray currents from nearby boats. In some cases they can be heard to fizz while lying stationary.

I really like Distant Shores boat and hope you build something like what they are building. I just found out that 48 feet is the longest that you can have in most marinas before they start charging you a lot more money. I'm not sure what length your new boat will be but Distant Shores is 48 feet and that length to me would be perfect.

We really wanted to build a boat with Meta and to change one of their exiting designs was cheaper than designing one from scratch and the have 43 or 50 and 50 would be too much for us. We think 43 is a great size for all we need. Also, we couldn’t afford a bigger one

@@OddLifeCrafting Yes, I really like the work they do and I to would go for the 43 based on affordability. It is a beautiful boat! The things I like about Distant Shores is the way it's designed underneath the water line. I'm not a huge fan of the flat transom but I'm sure that you can fix that and make it nicer looking with a swim step and possibly a little extension to the hull. I'm also going to build an aluminum boat. I'm about ready to purchase the plans for a Mumby Cyber 48 like Sailing Life on Jupiter has. Hope to see you out on the water some day!

"Bestevaer" was the nickname of the legendary Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter, possibly the greatest admiral in history, who fought in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, North Sea and Scandinavian waters, and never lost a battle. He also led the Dutch raid on the Medway which was the very last time that a foreign military force set foot on English soil. Bestevaer means something like "good father" or grandfather, and it was what he was called by his crews. All in all, I rather think Bestevaer is a good name, a VERY good name for a boat. I am amazed at the displacement of a 36ft boat being kept at under nine tons.

No, with the right aluminium you don't need to protect, some boatyard apply a clear coat for stetics reasons but we really agree with that. 99% sure our boat will be just raw aluminum.

Feliz Natal! KM make great boats it's interesting that Gerald Dystrka (spelling?) who could lets face it buld whatever boat he wanted has chosen to go down in size to 36 feet. I wonder if it's possible to design hatches so they can be easily changed to open the other way round, I don't think it would be that hard (just use a pin in the hinge mechanism and change it to the other side/turn the lid round - idea for your new boat!
