I bought these at the beginning of the summer. First time I had dropped serious $ on clubs and frankly, 110% worth it. I grew up playing cheap clubs that you’d buy in a full set, and spent my early 20s playing my great-grandfathers blade-like irons circa the late 90s. Hitting these things was like driving a rolls-Royce after only driving a beater car all my life. Amazing clubs, super forgiving, great soft feel, and I gained almost 20 yards on my 5 iron. Love these things!

I have the 2017 version and I love them. Im an 8.8 HDCP. full disclosure, I spent a lot of money on lessons. I was easily a 20 when i really started golfing but have improved my game greatly, and these clubs really help! The inspire confidence when standing over the ball, and deliver the performance. I wish my set had a gap wedge, but will likely buy a separate 50 or 52 to cover the gap left by the strong lofted PW. I would by these clubs again in a heart beat.

I absolutely love my 2019 P790's. By far my favorite irons I've ever played. Looks are important to me and I get that with these clubs without massively sacrificing on forgiveness which I need as an 8 handicap. I also love that I can really step on them if needed. I've always preferred to take a full swing if possible and these irons allow me to do that more often by clubbing down and stepping on one. Sound and feel are great too.

I lucked into a full set of these from a co worker who also happened to be left handed and had just gotten fit for PXG’s. He had been fit for P790’s about 1.5 years earlier. I love them. They are a huge improvement over my old old offset top flites. Even though they weren’t fit for me I feel like I’m actually playing golf now instead of embarrassing myself with every swing. I’ll probably ride them for many more years until I can justify to the wifey I need to get a full bag fitting…. You know eventually….

I got the original p790s right after they first came out. I know this is cheesy AF, but I still get as excited to hit them as I did when I got them. My handicap hovers between 0.5-1.4ish, and these irons do everything I need them to do. I think they are the only clubs in my bag (and quite possibly the only clubs I’ve ever owned) where I’ve never considered switching to something new or different.

Im interested in buying some more forgiving clubs. My handicap hovers from 0-2. I’m currently playing mizuno mb 25. My concern is that I may hit them too long and/or have too big of a gap between my wedges and low irons. Do you have any issues like that?

Rick I made a visit to a golf store in our town and went into the simulator and I hit every game improvement iron they had. Callaway Apex, Apex DCB, Mizuno JPX Hot Metal & Hot Metal Pro, Ping G425, Taylormade Sim2, Sim Max, and M6. All of them were 7 irons. My current irons are 2006 Big Bertha. I hit my 7 iron about 135 to 140 yards. I am 64 years young and a 19 handicap. I did not hit the Callaway clubs that well. They were the first ones that I hit and I hadn't warmed up so that could have been the problem. I hit each of these irons about 148 to 153 yards on average. The young man that was helping me why I didn't grab the Taylormade P790. I told him that it looked like something that would be difficult for a higher handicap golfer to hit. He told me I would be surprised. First swing with the P790, 161 yards. Great feel with a slight draw. My normal shot is a slight fade but usually straight. Second swing, 165 yards, high ball flight with a slight draw, same great feel. Third swing absolutely sweet, 169 yards, next one, 172 yards. Never in my life have I hit a 7 iron over 150 yards. Now the bad news, the golf shop can custom fit me but will not be able to make the clubs until next year. No stock. The Taylormade P790 are the best irons that I have ever hit. Great video Rick.

Rick, Thank you for this video, I have to agree with you, I am a mid handicapper and decided it was time to replace my old TaylorMade M5s, I tried for a month the PXG third gen P and I could not hit them consistently at all , I was so frustrated that ended up returning them and got back to he drawing board. I narrowed down my short list to the Mizuno Hotmetal, Mizuno pro 225, Mizuno Forged and the P790, after a long and detailed fitting session, the PI790 was the best fit for my type of swing, and ended up buying them, they are forgiving enough for my type of swing and handicap (15) , and I am over the moon how happy I am with these clubs. In term of looks, for my taste, I rated the Mizuno pro 225 first, a second close the P790 and a third the hotmetal/Forged. When I tried the Mizuno and the P790., I felt far more confident with the P790, it is possible because I am coming from the same family, for whatever reason, I was hitting the P790 longer and with less dispersion the Mizuno.....

Great video Rick. I still play with an original set of the 2017 version of the P790’s, which I bought brand new. I had the lofts weakened by 2 degrees on every club when I was fitted. Taylormade seem to be tinkering with the looks to make them look different and give them shelf appeal. I won’t be replacing my 2017 P790 irons with the 2021 version, as you can’t improve a masterpiece, which the original 2017 irons are.

I’ve had the 2019 P790’s for around 11 months now, and they have been an amazing set to have in the bag. They give you a lot of confidence at address and definitely a decent amount of forgiveness on slightly off center shots. Like Rick said, the only real worry is that if you nail one flush it can go a club further than anticipated and does mess with your head a bit. But that’s an operator error, not the clubs. Going from 17 to 8 handicap will do that. I do find myself thinking (due to being a fairly long hitter) that stronger lofted clubs may be beginning to be a hindrance rather than a help and a club that promotes shot shaping might be a better option. Maybe some P7MB’s might be the ticket..if they release a ‘21 version I might be in trouble!

I love the way you mess up and laugh. Oh and that cliff-hanger putt. Brilliant.

Just bought a P790 udi 2 driving iron and I love it!

Recently bought these and they are easily the best irons I've ever owned or played. I'm a 10 handicap but these could easily be played by anyone 10 strokes on either side of that. They look amazing, feel great and are easy to hit out of a variety of lies.

Hi Rick, I recently went to American golf down at trafford for an iron set fitting and am faced with a big dilemma between the p790s and t300s the numbers came out identical but the spin rate was a tad higher with the p790s. Any help/advise on which ones to go for would be much appreciated 👌

Hi Rick, great videos as usual! I feel a bit daft asking but……when addressing the ball with driver am I supposed to ‘allow’ the club to sit on the ground behind the ball, which seems to open the face slightly or should I address the ball with the back of the head slightly raised which seems to close the club face? I’ve not seen this covered in any videos and I’m really not sure!

They look really good. I got fitted for the Ping I500 and now I play with ping clubs but I really wanted to play with Taylormade, their sets of clubs looks so good!

Another great video Rick. Question for you..do think a golfer ..me..who shoots 90-95..can use these clubs?

Taylormade is on a run of making some great irons wow. I brought up the distance inconsistency issue to the taylormade rep when I got fit for my p770's and he said the p790 distance inconsistency is due to the player not the iron. Those who complain that they'll randomly smoke one aren't consistent ball strikers and at that moment caught one off the middle rather than hitting it off the toe or off the heel.

I love the honesty in these videos so much. What are the chances you review the PXG 0211 blades?

I’ve got a set of these. Got the 2019 version (but bought in 2020). Bought them when I was playing off 26 and now I’m 18. Can safely say have had no problems hitting them!

Thanks for a great breakdown. Any chance you’ll be comparing these and the Stealth irons?

I have the 2017's and really love them. A great all around club. Excellent feel and they look nice.

Rick could you do a video explaining the difference between forged and cavity back etc. I hear all of these different terms and looking to buy a new set of irons next year but don't know what would be best.
@markmurray10913 жыл бұрын
Forgiveness with the cavity backs due to a larger sweet spot and perimeter weighting, spin, control/workability and distance with the forged.

Finding clubs that work for you is so much more difficult that one would think. Thanks for another great review. I have been and am still on the hunt for affordable beginner clubs.

Check out Takomo 101 irons. They are basically P790’s at a fraction of the price (less than $500 for the set).

Rick, can expect to hit the p790 7 iron as long as the SIM OS 7 iron? There is a significant difference in loft.

How would you rank each year make? Does each year make show the same consistency like your 9iron test at the end of your video?

Rick, thank you for amazing reviews and sharing your golf knowledge. I want your opinion on the Titleist T200 compared to the 2021 P790s? Thanks! Steve

I got fitted for a driver (Epic Max LS) the other day, and the fitter gave me one of these (7 iron) to warm up, and I have to say I was impress by their look, and their feeling of the face. Felt pretty nice and they gave me a "tour" vibe type of irons.

I play the P790 from 2020. And it’s the best golf clubs I ever had. I played at hcp 1 and played the game for 30 years.

12 handicap player. I played a round just using these Taylormade P790 4 thru PW.(No driver, 3wood or 5 wood). They are the BEST clubs I have ever hit. They are EVERYTHING advertised. Forgiving? YES...Highly suggested.

Would like to see 4 thru p wedge data on your monitor.I have heard that there is a big gap in distance in the mid irons. Need data with out change the lofts. Tjanks

I loved my Taylormade irons but I've found that almost all TM irons I've tried sound flat. Maybe some people like that but I've always been partial to a higher pitched "click" from say a Mizuno or Titleist iron.

Im currently using the Nike vapor fly irons and Im wondering if I should change them to a newer set of irons. With a handicap of 24, what kind of irons should I consider? I love the looks of p790 and the Ping i500. What do you reckon?
