Spot-on Pete. I just got back from my Srixon fitting for irons and a driver. My ego was telling me I needed a blended set of ZX-7s and 5s. My head said to have no expectations and to go with feel and results. I put an order in for regular graphite-shafted ZX-4s (4-PW) and a stiff graphite-shafted ZX-5 driver. I have never hit such good shots in my life. The toed, heeled and thinned shots were still so much better than shots with my old clubs.

Peter - as a 20+ handicapper I moved from "blades" to Wilson Fat Shaft about 10 years ago, following some advice from a friend who is a scratch golfer. They are definitely easier to hit but also added Cobra Baffler hybrids to help with the longer irons (3-5). Obviously technology has come on even further over the last 10 years and now in the market for some new irons as I'm bringing my handicap down as I play more regularly. Its really interesting to see these new irons and if I'm honest don't understand why more golfer don't got for the "forgiving" versions, apart from golf snobbery Keep up the great work and love the changes of outfits in you video !😉

I am a beginner (10 months since first round - @ 1 year since first swing). I had the opportunity to spend an hour testing any and all the brands in an Atlanta golf shop and walked out with a receipt for a set of Halos. I got the full, fitted set just 3 weeks later! I still swing other guys’ clubs whenever I can, but I haven’t swung any club that gives me better results than the Halos. If the club face is pointed in the right direction, I get a good shot. I don’t use a driver, and my longest iron shot is about 160 yards. But I can still break 100 because the Halos compensate for my toe or heel shots.

I keep going out to buy a new set of irons but like you, have the 588s. Yes, newer irons go longer but the 588s go up in predictable increments and give me full shots from closer in. Similarly, was going to buy a Sim Max 2 driver but at the time, were out of stock with a few months waiting list. Bought & currently playing Tour Edge E721 Irons. Engineered for Mid to High Handicap Players. Power Lofted, Forgiveness is extreme, off center strikes kind of still go straight, you can feel as if it's like the face is twisting, yet the ball goes straight! You can still Fade & Draw the ball, hit it Higher, Lower, Normal is High trajectory! Graphite shafted! I would suggest these irons for anyone to use. Try them out. I literally tried every brands new irons for 2022 all their Pro Forged Blades, Mid Cavity Back, High Cavity Back, Game Improvement, etc. for 2022, Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, Wilson, Srixon, Mizuno, all the big names! Tried them all over the course of 3 weeks almost everyday! Narrowed it down to the Tour Edge E721 & C722 Iron sets! I have no brand affiliations or any preferred club brand! These irons just performed very well, almost everytime I hit the ball they just fly straight & land soft. The 5 iron that I bought separately is a little tough to hit correctly this is my only issue! I may switch to a 7 Wood as I've heard they're a great option for that Loft Number! The irons I own are a bit heavier than most of the other brands I tried, graphite shafts feel nice, they look sharp, not like game improvement irons at all. They actually look cool. I am so happy I switched from Traditionally Lofted irons to the power Lofted irons. I am a Wedge Player & love the short game! With Power Lofted Irons you will need more Wedges! My set came with Pitching Wedge, Approach Wedge & Gap Wedge, I also added Vokey SM8 54° & 60° Wedges so now I technically have five wedges, PW, AW, GW, SW, LW, this has allowed me to score better, taking advantage of the irons accuracy! Approach shots 9 iron PW, etc all fly Straight, High & Land Soft with plenty of spin to grab the greens! Although they will not help with your Aiming, you will hit them where you Aim them! They will Fade if you hit a Slice or Draw if you hit a Hook! Slicing & Hooking the ball has nothing to do with hitting the face off center or High on the face, Toe, Hossle strikes, whatever! That's your clubhead & face in relation to your Swing path & aiming direction. But off center hits will fly relatively well as before with normal irons, I would lose tons of distance & direction, these maybe come up short 5/10 yards or less! I vouch for any of these game improvement irons, teally for any player! There very little down side & much too gain! Hope I helped sway someone to take the step & buy some of these irons! Mizuno Forged Blades look great but are not for everyone! Forget the stigma & just have fun hitting greens in regulation!

I bought the Sim2 MaxOS irons last year after playing with 20 year old Yonex irons. The difference in distance was STUNNING. 2-3 full clubs difference. Where I really noticed though was how many more fairways I hit. Or, on shots that I would've sliced into the woods, they'd settle in the rough or deep rough (but playable). As a high handicapper lefty, I find most courses I play aren't set up to favour my type of swing. I only got 20 rounds or so in last year, but my scores in 2021 were in the 92 range, and in 2020 with the old irons they were 96/97. Playable lies, closer to the green... made a big difference. I'm at the "bogey golf on a good day" level (trying to get down to a solid mid-low teens handicap and I'll be happy ) and I stumbled across a well-priced (AUD 300) set of second hand Cleveland 588 MT irons last year (all are the MT variant of the 588 series: 4 to PW). They may have come out 10 years ago, but seem to have been a bit ahead of their time: muscle-backed (to cover up the cavity) but titanium, to keep the weight down and with a forged face. Lower handicappers would probably hate them, with the chunky top line, the visible "@rse" on the 4/5/6 irons, and there is a loss of feel around the greens - but that's something I've learned to manage. The straightest face I use for short bump and runs is the 9 iron, and I've got used to the "chunkiness" of using it. But, combining the short irons in the set with a couple of proper "grown up" bladed wedges (a 52 degree Callaway and 58 degree Cleveland) seems to work well. I'm not a big hitter, so that gapping of 45 degree PW, 52 GW and 58 S/LW is something I can work with and "feel" my way around. I love these irons for full shots, though. Their chunkiness behind the ball (without being ridiculous) gives me a lot of confidence, and I love the solid "thunk" when I hit the ball well. And off-centre strikes (which I have a lot of :-) ) aren't punished too much at all. I have a high spinny ball flight anyway, so I get the stop I need on the greens (on the rare occassions I hit greens from distance! :-) ) . These Cleveland 588 MTs have definitely helped me improve. Onwards and upwards!

I have a set of Arnold Palmer APX Extra Distance Oversized irons from 1997. Cavity backs. I've used them for 25 years. Got them after the 4 iron in my Arnold Palmer golf club set (including cart bag) that I bought for $179 at K-Mart in 1994 or 1995 broke. Company sent me the whole new upgraded APX set, including graphite shaftered driver, 3 and 5 woods (original Palmer set had steel shafted driver and woods). I've played the Palmer APX irons ever since. I have upgraded my driver to a Cobra F9 Speedback and Cobra Speed LD/F 3 and 5 woods from 2008. Also had a 2007 Cobra Speed LD/F 9.0 degree driver that is still the most forgiving driver I have ever hit.

I got to say the TaylorMade mcgb irons from a few years back are awesome. Its hard to hit a bad shot even for a 8 handicap. Simply put it's like having a bag full of drivers. Great video Pete, and I would love to see u play a 1v1 match with launchpads.

I purchased Wilson Staff D9 irons and I swear they’ve taken about 4-5 strokes off my play. I upgraded from some terrible blades from the 2000’s. I swear I’m hitting so many more greens with these irons and even mis hits tend to go further and more straight. Also the price was an insane deal compared to the big boys, highly highly recommended these irons if your a 80-100 shooting golfer.

The opening statement is more fact than people are ready to hear. I never understood why people who are mediocre golfers would want to buy clubs that make the game harder for them. Unless you're shooting close to par all the time, stay with "game improvement" irons. Hell, even most scratch players don't need to get "blades" etc. I am using Ping g425 with a 10-15 handicapp.

and you want a game to be challenging, like a videogame in that sense. of course not so much that you get frustrated but playiong on easy mode just gets boring after a while. of course thats not everyone, but the majority of players think that way i would imagine, not that i know lol

hi Pete, loving the content as usual. i have always wanted to take up the game but alas i am as usually skint and sadly can't afford a set of clubs . I have came up with a cracking idea for a series for your you-tube channel. taking a complete novice golfer giving me, oops i mean him a set of nice forgiving golf clubs and seeing how far I ,oops i've done it again i meant they can improve over so many golf lessons from a pro like yourself. surely that would improve the subscribers to the already top notch golf channel.

@@matthewschlaack5238 Suggestion; if you have some less forgiving ones now, don't ditch them, but once you get your game going with those Wilsons, start practicing with your old ones too, at least every now and then. That way you can improve your hitting while still enjoying the gaming part fully.

For some reason I went with the PXG 0211 - definitely could have (and probably should have) spent less, but they are very nice looking behind the ball and are pretty forgiving. I badly thinned an 8-iron the other day from 140 and still ended up about 10 ft. There's also a PXG shop near me so I was able to get fitted, not sure I would recommend these without a fitting.
@michaelhill29332 жыл бұрын
I went with the 0211dc and im pretty dissapointed, they arent as forgiving as my nike vrs x from like 10 years ago. A little off the heel and its like 20 yards short, massive differences in ball speed depending on where you hit them on the face. My 8 iron can fluctuate between 80mph ball speed and 115mph. Ive hit it 130y on a heel strike and ive hit it like 180 on a pure strike. They are teaching me to hit the middle though

When I played lots of golf and before the long layup of my game due to job moves and area moves, then of course the arthritis, which further has delayed my return to golf my irons were a set of Ping S57 irons. I still love those irons, but hardly the most forgiving… plenty of feedback…. And on my return to the game perhaps need to be at least temporarily retired in favour of some more forgiving irons. So, any of the three sets mentioned would be great. Albeit necessarily in the graphite shafts and very cushioned grips to further protect; hands, wrists and elbows even more. What I personally would be looking for are irons preferably sub £200 second hand for irons a couple or a few years old or more that are as forgiving as the ones looked at here, but where the technology is no less advanced.

Great vid. Love the enthusiasm! I went for a fitting last week. Chose the Stealths. Cobra’s came a very close second. Big step up from Wilson Matrix (very cheap high MOI).
@woogie29012 жыл бұрын
I found the Stealths to be pretty good too, but had the best results (on a simulator) with the Srixon ZX5's - same distance, but higher launch and higher spin. Fairly consistent too, even with my pretty inconsistent ball striking. Was weird to hit 170-180 metres with a 7 iron though... Bit stronger lofted than my 20+ year old cavitys I'm currently using - I usually pick my current 7 iron for a 150-160m shot.
