The greatest Grand National performance you will ever see was by Crisp, he was a 2 miler and jumped the 'OLD' fences like a Gazelle, and of course what people forget was that he was giving Red Rum 1 1/2 stone!! Later that year the two horses met at Doncaster for a rematch, but this time at equal weights and at distance of 3 1/4 mile. Crisp cruised to an 8 length victory and according to his jockey Richard Pitman was 'Never off the bridle'.

He was a good horse but red rum won 3 nationals, 2 seconds a Scottish national second in the Hennessey at Newbury. That's what handicapping is about , Crisp was good but not in Red Rums quality and he never really recovered from that race.

Richard Pitman is something of an idol to me for the way he's handled it. Never once has he shown a trace of bitterness or jealousy, and he's always been full of praise for his horse and for the experience of the run he had on him. Honestly, if it had been any of the famous sports stars from this era, they'd have lost their marbles within two weeks, and turned to alcohol and crime. Richard Pitman is a national treasure.

Coming from behind and holding on for the win does not make a racehorse "brave". The bravest I have ever seen a horse was Alysheba - bumped at the gate, bumped on the track, then almost going down when he clipped the back hooves of a horse in front of him - all good reasons to quit. But he didn't. He came on to win ...thanks in large part to Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron. THAT WAS BRAVERY.

Crisp was not a champion, Red Rum was a champion, L'Esgargot and the Dikler were champions. What championship race did Crisp win? He was well beaten in the gold cup and whitbread. He ran a great race on favourable ground but didn't stay. How many races did Crisp win in the UK ? How many did Red Rum, L'Esgargot and the Dikler win? On your argument Roberto was better than Brigadier Gerard!
