Great episode! I think I prefer it when it’s just you two discussing things- Skype interviews get tough especially when the other person has a bad setup, lol. Curious though- you said you consider most Catholic soteriology outside the camp because it adds works: how do you separate that from Eastern Orthodox beliefs? I know you’ve had that EO woman on a couple times (awesome episodes!) but they hold the James view of faith as “if there are no works then it isn’t real faith” so then a man is saved by faith and works. How does that differ from the Catholic teaching in your opinion- also keeping in mind that the language used in the council of Trent would have been highly charged and reactionary against the Reformation. My struggle with it is that someone who believes in Sola Fide would typically agree that if faith doesn’t produce works (a changed life) than it likely isn’t real faith, but EO and RC churches, who hold to faith and works (or faith that produces works) would consider the thief on the cross saved even he had no works to speak of. So I guess I’m curious as to 1) is the debate splitting hairs in your opinion (especially knowing that the East never had issue with seeing faith and works as intimately connected) and 2) why do you consider EO in the camp enough to have them on the show, but not RC? I’m baptist-ish btw so I have no dog in this fight, lol, just curious.

Great question! Tbh, there is some internal debate between us about this issue. When I read Frederica Mathewes Greene’s articulation of justification by faith in EO, it sounded Protestant. The same goes for Hank Hanagraaf’s response to John MacArthur, which you can find on KZbin. On the other hand, I spoke with a former EO this week who says that their Gospel includes works within EO. What both Josh and I lack are firsthand readings of EO church dogma. We are going off what EO folks have told us about their doctrine. I asked the former EO to send me what he can find regarding official EO doctrine on the subject. If it seems to conflict with Scripture, I would like to then pass it along to Frederica and see what she says. I think sometimes, for both RCC and EO, its hrs to honestly find out what they believe. I have read entire books on the subject, and still walked away not knowing for sure. I will say, tho, that there are both saved and unsaved people in every tradition-RCC, EO, and Protestant. Not everyone believes their precise church dogma. We are trying to find out more! We treasure your prayers as we seek discernment on this and many things. God bless

@@michaelrowntree2005 thanks for the thoughtful answer brother. And it's interesting that you see hank's answer as sounding protestant- because it's his answer to the question of faith and works where I saw, "oh it's a james definition of faith that requires works" and made me think there might be hairsplitting going on in both camps. Thanks for what you guys are doing!
@michaelrowntree20054 жыл бұрын
Order of Eden haha yea... well most Protestants will agree with Martin Luther who said, “Faith alone saves, but not faith that is alone.” I do think James’ use of “justified” is different from Paul’s. It more takes the sense of “vindicated” in James, as in, “faith plus works vindicate that our faith was real.” So I don’t see contradiction between James and Paul.... But to your point, it’s really hard to know what Hank precisely meant, or anyone, without really talking it through, which can lead to hair splitting for sure. I am eagerly seeking to understand EO and RCC better, and it has been quite hard. Great thoughts!
@VeryBasicBible4 жыл бұрын
Just to clear it up and maybe add some more thoughts on this. First the context: Josh named the Nicene Creed, then named Catholics, Protestant, Orthodox. Michael went on to say “...Catholics?” because y’all don’t interview Catholics. In then explaining why he (Josh) could say Catholics, he first encouraged us to read widely in the Christian Faith and named some names of divergent but generally agreed upon Christian people. Then went on to explain how yes, some Catholics are saved but Catholicism denies a central Christian tenant. Ok, I typed “you said the names of many Christians that are generally agreed upon, but you didn’t name Todd White or Greg Boyd” (or something very close). When y’all read it it seemed as though y’all misunderstood- I don’t fault anyone for misunderstanding stuff typed over live chat while doing a KZbin video, that context is ripe for miscommunication. So here’s what I meant: Instead of just naming two (Todd White and Greg Boyd, prominent open theist) I should’ve named more, and not named Todd at all as it was distracting. For instance, Josh didn’t say “Be read widely, read Greg Boyd, Fred Phelps, Sunny Hernandez, Steven Anderson.” Instead he named names that most will all agree are Christians, names that won’t get automatically called out. “Uhm... so what’s your point B.J.” Oh yeah, my point. Here it is: In explaining why Catholics aren’t under orthodoxy, you prefaced it by naming some orthodox theologians from different stripes. But by naming those who most already agree with and not super controversial ones (like the ones I named), that presupposes “we already know who the real Christians are”, before we went on to talk about discerning who the real Christian are. So it’s like we’ve already decided beforehand. Or something like that. Later y’all had to say who y’all agreed we’re orthodox, named Church of Christ and others. But before all this, before saying “How can we discern who a real Christian is?” we were already naming a bunch of real Christians and leaving others out. If we really want to be fair and logical we’d not have named any at all beforehand, especially in the context of “Why aren’t these guys orthodox?” Sorry for the extra long and probably confusing explanation, I just wanted to explain myself. You guys really are great 🙂 Keep fighting the good fight.

Hymenaeus was not a preterist in that day because he said the resurrection was past, although he was a heretic. His heresy about the resurrection was probably gnostic but more than that counted as blasphemy because he was denying the judgment that was coming soon that was to accompany the resurrection of the dead.

Couple questions about the fellowship issue -- Do you -- either of you -- believe that having friendships with people from other religions is wrong? If so, do you break off these friendships? I realize "fellowship" may not include "friendships"; but this what I'm trying to understand here, as "fellowship" has a connotation of "religiosity" or spiritual sisterhood; while friendship may or may not ??

Do you remember my example about the guy who gets saved in “First Baptist Church,” in an altar call? Do you remember Josh’s response about the difference between denying these doctrines and not yet knowing them? How did you understand that part?

Lol, ignore my last response I intended that for someone else 😂
@michaelrowntree20054 жыл бұрын
And thanks for the question! I think we must build friendships with people of other religions to “make disciples of all nations.” The Greek Word for fellowship essentially/generally means “the sharing of life,” and in the Bible it is always among Christians. So the Bible distinguished between friendship and fellowship. Fellowship always includes friendship, but friendship does not always include fellowship.

@michaelrowntree20054 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin! Correct. Check out John 3:16 in the NIV versus the NKJV. NIV says “one and only” and NKJV says “only begotten”. It’s the same Greek word, translated differently. A good cross reference is Heb 11:17, which refers to Isaac as Abraham’s “only begotten son” (NKJV) or “one and only son” (NIV). Isaac was not the only son. Ishmael was also “begotten” of Abraham. But Isaac was unique bc he was the son of the covenant.

What makes me a Christian and who decides if am or not a Christian and why? And who gave him or them the authority to make me a christian? Personally, I think that there's two kind of Christians or believers in the world, the Christian of the world and the one who follows CHRIST. Who knows which one am I? For sure JESUS knows who I belong to. And I know that THE FATHER loves me and I THE FATHER. Without JESUS in my heart, my love for THE FATHER would not be possible. Did CHRIST came into the world and went the cross to make Christians? Does CHRIST wants me to be a Christian? What is the will of THE FATHER? GOD BLESSS

Hello new to this channel and have a question. I recently had a run in with a KJV only group who I agree with that it’s the closest to the original Greek text. But then was blasted because I believe in the original language Greek and Hebrew Textus Receptus. I told them you can’t translate some words properly to English. I even brought up obey and submit; hupoarkuo and hupotasso. Children obey and wives submit. There’s a difference in the Greek. My question is in scripture alone how do you deal with translation inaccuracies. Not that they’re way off. But still translation matters. I totally see where the original language protects the doctrine. P.S. so many false beliefs come about because of not having the understanding of the original language. How say you?

I believe love will be the obvious marker for what Christians "look like. Doctrine can be relative and subjective although I would agree in fundamental doctrine. Creeds are only as good as the understanding of those making such creeds. Matthew 13:26-30 KJVS But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. [27] So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? [28] He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? [29] But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. [30] Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

True, love is the marker of true christians. But Love does not change truth. True love is in line with the truth. Creeds attempt to give base principles of essential truths, any contradictory claim going against a true creed, even “in love”, can not be truth and also is not true love and should be rejected. Like a simple creed, “jesus is God.” Any claim or creed contradicting that truth is not based on love or truth. But yes, creeds are not all encompassing and are not meant to be, they are meant to be short statements in answer to the question, “what do you believe”. For the gray areas the bible tells us what is right and what to believe. So, no, doctrine is not relative, right? because the bible is our doctrine and is never changing and “breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness.

@@skylercutsforth8595 a creed is only relevant as in the proportion to what understands scripture to mean. Outside of God dying for the sins of the world, our understanding of the bible and thus creeds must shift to accommodate our evolving understanding of scripture and for that reason I find creeds to be of little significance. The only creed I believe truly matters is the one in which your heart affirms to you in your belief in Jesus Christ 😉

But so is every word of the bible, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1 and essentially there is no difference between the positions of the two. Validity of creeds are reliant on us accurately stating them. But truth does not change by our perception of it. I don’t really put much weight in creeds unless they’re directly in line with the word of God. Our understanding of the bible’s truths should not be ever evolving. And we can not rely on our hearts to tell us what truth is because the bible says that, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9

The bible expresses different theological solutions to JC's divinity, to attonement and original sin. Sorry u and the institutional church do not get to define who is Christian. To Christians that dont understand The Trinity, dont let anyone tell you what to believe if you need to know figure it out for yourself, or just get on with living for Christ.
