The story goes that Bobbie Vylan (from Bob Vylan) made a joke to Laurie from Slaves about not being able to wear the merch due to him being black, and Laurie agreed. They talked about new names and Bobbie suggested Soft Play, Laurie loved it and here we are! He changed it for his friend, I think its wholesome!

I love Soft Play and I love that you're giving them this exposure! They're such a great band. I loved them as Slaves, but their reasoning for changing their name just made me love them more. As a forward facing progressive movement punk should be changing with the times. The only people saying punk is dead are fat old men who didn't care about politics and wanted to drink and fight. The Ramones playing rock and roll really fast was kinda cool I guess but they also wrote boring rock 'n' roll cliches lyrically and had shit politics. There's a reason they had mass appeal.

It's punk they have changed their name. People would expect usually a band to stick with a name but they've just went ahead and done it regardless of what people think. I'll admit that I'd not heard of them, but they supported The Prodigy at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham recently and they were amazing! They came on to The Vengaboys which was hilarious, and then smashed it! Their energy was infectious and unwavering! The crowd were bouncing and I loved every minute that they were on the stage! I looked them up as soon as I got home, they've got a new fan right here! Changing their name is totally understandable as far as I can see, it's their choice, if people don't like it, that's their problem, not the bands?

I saw this pair play at the Wagon & Horses in Digbeth, I think they'd just released their first EP or mini album or something like that, a mate of mine had done the artwork. I didn't really agree with the name change at first, because they've defended what they meant by the name many years ago, which I think was fair. however how they've handled this is pretty fucking cool and regardless of their name you can't deny their sound is something special considering they're just two people. Robbie definitely was an unlikely feature 😂 I do know however that despite the heavy sound they have a lot of pop sentimentalities and a broad taste in music.

Define “woke” first…anyone with half a brain would understand that people mature as they age…in HS, I called people the F word without a thought. Now that I’m older, I understand how much of a coward I actually was. It’s Punk to fight for those that can’t fight for themselves. Its really easy to be the same white dude you’ve always been.

Played a bunch of festivals over the last five years or so with these guys. Not really my bag but hats off to the noise they create. Really dreadful name change.... pandering to the cause isn't exactly punk is it.

What's punk has to change with the times, the establishment you're raging against isn't the same as it was 30 years ago and if the establishment is racist, fighting racism is punk. And hey, if it's pandering, why is everyone so up in arms about it? Doesn't sound much like taking the easy option to me.

I never really listened to Slaves, wasn't hugely aware of them. I don't necessarily believe they had to change the name, it wouldn't have bothered me (or anyone I know for that matter) but they can if they want, it's their band. Either way, this song is awesome. It has a real old school punk feel to it. Now hopefully they go in on the punk thing and rip into the mainstream

They are an incredible band, the gigs are epic. The Slaves was originally meant as we are all slaves to the wage, the 9 til 5 etc. not the historical slave trade, they realised it was misconstrued and causing offence so changed it. Personally I'm not sure about the new name, but couldn't really give a monkeys!

So all in all they are just whining about people who were whining about them, but somehow their whining is morally superior. And if we're at it.... it's laughable to claim moral high ground when they changed the band name after the public outcry. Or did they think before that the term slave was something positive? They changed it because it was a disadvantage especially in the last few years, so ultimately they bent over to conformity, irrespective of how much they advertise this masquerade about values and doing whatever they want to and not because they have to. They changed the name because they had to and try to sell it like it was some kind of punk thing because they pissed off some of their own fans and they don't care about their opinion (unlike the commercial aspect of their decision...

Punk will never die. Every country will be touched and changed and leave its mark. I would suggest that Japan's Otoboke Beaver hold punk dearest check them out, then there's South Africa's Soap Girls, Kazakhstan's Adaptatsiya, West coast USA's Starcrawler & Australia's Amyl & the Sniffers. Justin's reacted to the last two why not give the Beaver's a bit of promotion too? Band's changing their names..? Has Justin heard Eskimo... sorry Electric Callboy? He should.

Punk is dead i grew up durring the 3rd wave of punk, everyone wanted to be an individual we made alot of our own clothes to react to the styles we liked. It was all about being yourself and being able to talk and share ideas whether troublesome or not. So much of it was about being yourself. Now it's all band wagon jumping all the kids out there pretending to be gay and transgender for the like or views it's so disrespectful to my friends who were out being themselves while the rest of society was making fun of them or putting them down and they were still out and openly being themselves. All the hard work they did to live they're own life and supporting others. Kids and punks today have no idivuality everyone copies what ever happens to be popular everyone is afraid to state they're real feelings about anything because it might now be how the other 90% think. Thank goodness I never claimed for be a punk just a rock and roller. The punk scene aside from some old school bands is just lame as all hell.

@@jonnyhafer936 Punk is all about being yourself so people should.... not talk about being gay or trans? I live in one of the most progressive cities in the world and my gay and trans friends are still regularly threatened and attacked for being who they are in public. It's not a fun little bandwagon, it's spitting in the face of the establishment, a new frontier. You claim there's no individuality and yet you want everyone to just go back to the way they were 30 years ago. Talk about being a conformist.
