Synchronisation. This is what today's episode all about - it's a longer episode today as I try and explain to those of you who may not be familiar with this term, what it's all about. To showcase what I mean I'm going to react to some situations where my song was used in commercials, TV shows and film and how it feels when that happens.

If there’s *ANY* commercial that should use ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’, it should be for a dating site/app, where someone says their ideal partner should like rock music, and then goes on a date at a Darkness concert. And for good measure, Justin should wink at the camera at the end.

I mean, how could you watch the music video for I Believe in a Thing Called Love and not realize it is the quintessential cheesy over-the-top 80s heavy metal music video? All it's missing is a dude in a plastic horned helmet and a dozen more women in bikinis lmao.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, sleep deprived, inadequately caffeinated Justin is the best! Laughed the whole way through this and the “that’s me playing that guitar…” bit was absolutely adorable! If it makes you feel any better, Justin, I also get aggressively defensive if anyone even thinks of dissing The Darkness. Unless you want a passionate and exhaustive elucidation on the musical prowess of each individual member of the band and the perfection with which it all comes together, don’t diss The Darkness near me! The sections are named after my favorite songs from 2003-04, though in a way it’s a playlist for my readers to feel the zeitgeist. The climax is titled: I Believe in a Thing Called Love. 10:14 - Thanks for this, Justin! Insisting on edit approval will almost DEFINITELY lose you the gig in my experience (I work at a music/sound company that mostly works on ads). Ad agencies will pitch shortlists of potential tracks to their client (ie American Burger Company) and a music supervisor will have inquired about all of them ahead of time before client sees the list. If there's any stipulations on any songs (ie no parody, edit approval, etc), those songs will get taken off the list right away (agencies don't like complications). I'd love to hear of any exceptions, cuz I think sync stories are kinda fun.

I read somewhere that the word originated from a word meaning “meat”, and people would use it to refer to those they’d sit around the table and eat with. Seems to have carried on as a term for friendship here in the UK and Australia but not as much anywhere else. Just to add, I tend to see the term “buddy” or “bud” as a common term in the US, I’m not sure if it’s the same for the rest of the UK, but when I grew up if someone called you Buddy it was often sarcastically and ironically. But many places like the US seem to use it as a term of endearment

Dude.. just wanted to say it's been a day or a dozen since I stumbled across your "reacting to charismatic voice reacting to your record" since I do so enjoy her (and other coaches') commentary and "expert" (at least educated) opinions where often disrespected mainstream musicians are celebrated for talent, especially technical skills and/or agility that folks like myself (complete layman when it comes to the academics of music - especially vocals) can too easily ignore, completely fail to recognize, and at best do not understand as exemplifying rare talent. Long story short, I found that video entertaining. And subscribed, and youtube has given me additional exposure to your "rides again" vlog episodes. I continue to find you entertaining, engaging, and quite "real" in your delivery and opinion. It's admirable to see humility and lack of pretense from someone who could easily take the other approach. It lends credibility to your message. That's it. Not a mancrush, not a diehard fan, not even familiar with most of your portfolio... just thought it might be well received for an internet random like myself to give you genuine, encouraging, and appreciative feedback. You're definitely attuning my awareness to your legacy, and I'm certain my newfound bias for your work will perk my ears as a result of these videos. Good on ya. And I do appreciate the entertainment, education, and expansion of my horizons. :)

It's so great to see you home! Welcome back! Oh man, I LOVED this video today. Not only because you're hilarious as always (honestly, you're so funny, I was bloody cry laughing). Your insight into the music biz from the other side was so interesting. Especially to hear your side as a songwriter's perspective. I used to work for APRA here in Australia for six years (Australasian Performing Right Association) and my job was in licensing events (collecting setlists to divvy up royalties on festival sets) and venues and trying to explain all of this to venues and festival people about songwriter royalty rights was often met with disdain. (Ere, why do I have to pay a licence, when I'm already paying the artist? type conversations). I wish I had this video at the time. It would have save me a lot of energy and they would have been beguiled by your charm! Money-in-the-bank! Another fab video, Justin and welcome home!

The Darkness came in at a time when everyone was taking themselves so seriously in music. You had the rap beefs, the 9/11 country songs, the emo bands, etc. The falsetto was unexpected and strange; people saw it as an easy target. I had Love is Only a Feeling on nearly every mix CD collection I burned regardless lol

I actually work in advertising and he’s bang on, it is a very long winded process when it comes to music usage in adverts. And a very very expensive one at that. Sometimes we even rework songs so that we can have further control over how it sounds. To give you an idea of how much this costs, we once used a pretty famous train related song from a group of brothers and it cost us about £110k per year!
