Three 6 Mafia are a Memphis based group that created the building blocks for the trap sound. Though trap music came from Atlanta, the sound originates from other earlier down south hip-hop genres like crunk, miami bass, bounce, and chopped & screwed.
Nahre and LA explore how Three 6 Mafia's sound influences modern rap music and later make their own crunk inspired beat.

Thank you for covering Crunk music, I’m big fan of the genre and if I can add something to the conversation: 1 - DJ Paul said in an interview that in Memphis they used to call the genre “get buck” and in Atlanta they called it “get crunk” 2 - Soundwise the group also sampled horror movies soundtracks to create tension The polytonal harmony mentioned was found only on prophet posse or was it on more crunk songs?

Rafaelbr33 LMAO it’s like Memphis and Atlanta are gonna argue this shit forever if I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen this Memphis vs Atlanta shit mannnnnnn. Shiiit when it comes to the word trap I know ATL played a big role especially with Ghetto Mafia, but we gotta give UGK some props too cuz while geto boys was south, UGK came with that REAL TEXAS COUNTRY TRAP SHIT 😂 Honestly I love both cities but I gotta side with Memphis when it comes to crunk THE GENRE because with the exception of Outkast and the organized noize camp, Atlanta was damn near Miami Jr. with all that Bass Music and to be honest, Bass music ain’t bad music but I don’t consider shit like that to be crunk even if it sorta paved the way.

I think it's also worth noting how 36 mafia not only laid groundwork for crunk, as in party music, but also the whole aesthetic of modern trap. While on one hand at the start of the decade you had Waka Flocka, basically creating or advancing what most people would now call trap, you also had the underground, such as Spaceghost Purrp (and his Raider klan), Asap Rocky (and his mob), Lil Ugly Mane (and his works with antwon and production as shawn kemp), the Suicide Boys (basically being to three six as Greta Van Fleet are to zeppelin). Which is not only noteworthy for the musical aspect, but the juxtaposition of its popularity. Usually when you think of club hits, you think about positive songs in a major key with an upbeat tempo. This almost satanic aesthetic made club hits with a dark, sinister tone with lethargic flows.

Armond Chaney ain’t a trip how it’s like 8ball and MJG are also Memphis legends but it’s like they couldn’t be any more different 😂 then again Suave House was a HOUSTON label so ofc Ball and G were gonna have a different sound they dang were from Houston in a sense.

Been a huge fan of 3-6 since the mid 90s. Did everything i could to spread their music to my friends throughout the south and east coast. So glad to see a video like this giving them the recognition they deserve for pioneering a whole new genre, not just making cool music. They were genius!

Got a few things wrong. Memphis was Buck, not crunk. ATL got crunk, getting buck was the older, darker cousin of crunk. You also didn’t chronologically spell it out correctly. Spanish fly>Squeeky and Zirk>three six mafia & Gimisum Everyone else in the area was doing the same sort of thing, meaning the same sort of sound, with the exception of ball and G were on a totally different but equally bumpin level. But you 2 should’ve really done some research on the subject and give proper homage to the pioneers. I do however appreciate you shedding some light on the subject because it goes unnoticed a lot, and that’s why I feel that this subject alone deserves more attention.

nick dianni LMAO it’s like Memphis and Atlanta are gonna argue this shit forever if I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen this Memphis vs Atlanta shit mannnnnnn.

I don't know if it's in your guy's wheelhouse considering your focus on newer music but I'd love a video on Sly and The Family Stone. I can't remember who said it but I remember hearing the argument that black music in America could be very convincingly divided into two eras: Before Sly Stone and after Sly Stone. Maybe something about popular music's most influential bass player Larry Graham, besides inventing bass-slapping he has fascinating ties to diverse artists like George Clinton, Prince and even his nephew Drake.

They didn't embrace them the ripped off their style if you were a real three 6 mafia you would know they hate people that jock their style juicy j even said people nowadays steal their style. $uicideboy$ claim that style like if it's their own and say they started that trend in one of their songs, that's not embracing.

@@dontworry5696 First off how you been listening to them for over 20 years if their first album was in 1994??? That sounds like some exaggeration a bandwagon hipster would say just to prove that they're so hip to music and how cool they are "BrO I'vE bEeN LiStEnInG tO ThEm BeFoRe ThEy GoT BiG". Second just cause an artist made a song with someone don't mean they cool with each other that's been evident from past artist that didn't get along and just did songs for money or to get notoriety from fans of the group they collabed with and some artists do it to prove they better than the person they collabed with, juicy j probably wanted to show these lil white boys where the style came from that $uicideboy$ claimed they created. Juicy j publicly stated that hella rapers now be stealing their style something that those lil white boys are known to do I mean 99% of their samples come from three 6 mafia and they jocked hella bars from them too and one of their nicknames. Calling out people for jocking their rap style sounds more like he dissing people who do rather than being cool with em. Now put on some country and go and listen to your people's music and hop off my people's 🍆.
