Dubstep became a viral sensation a decade ago, but at the height of its popularity it vanished. Dubstep came from UK garage music in the 90's, influenced by the syncopation of 2-step and the bass and reverb of Jamaican dub. What started off in London as an underground scene, became the soundtrack for popculture in the 2010's. So how did dubstep become mainstream, and where did it go?
LA Buckner researches the roots of dubstep and then attempts to create his own dubstep track. Everything from Skrillex to Skream, Benga, and Burial.

Asha Apple it all depends on what you like, back then all the dubstep had somewhat of the same sounds but now there is sooo many styles it’s hard to just say “oh I like dubstep “ dubstep as a whole has evolved so much from hype dubstep, more club style dubstep, shit we even got like rocker/metal style dubstep! The other guy who has replied to you named a bunch of artist who do more of a lower tempo style of dubstep more know to the new generation as “space bass”

There should be a followup video about what dubstep has become in today's day and age, it's expanded into so many more sub genres and allowed producers to create such insane tracks that nobody thought was possible 10 or 20 years ago, and the whole scene is very much alive and definitely far from its peak
@DrWiki-po1hk
@DrWiki-po1hk 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that the genre is expanding but the exposure has been long gone. The genre doesn't seem to be getting any mainstream recognition as it was in the previous years, and I feel we are losing more producers than we are gaining. If that's true, then in order to gather new listeners, this genre needs to be pushed into the light in some way. I don't think Riddim or any sound design tutorial video is ever going to do that. IMO we need a strong melodic scene. Young producers like Geoxor pushing boundaries in theory and composition is what's great for not just Dubstep, but Electronic Dance Music as a whole. It's talented, highly musical, and promotes sound design all in one fell swoop.

Pleasantly surprised with this one. You captured the history of dubstep very correctly, however I feel like Digital Mystikz would’ve been a better example of the original UK dubstep with dub influences, although I’m happy you mentioned Benga&Skream. Secondly, regarding the spin-off genres, it should be mentioned that dubstep essentialy became a spin-off genre of itself since nowaydays weekly if not daily new records are coming out which are capturing the old minimal dubstep sound very nicely. Record labels such as innamind, system, crucial recordings, and infernal sounds are references thereof. Lastly, the tune you made really sounds like a Silkie-style tune, so that’s worth checking out 😎

I knew that eventually we'd come back around to the 2006-2009 minimal dubstep sounds again (even though it really didn't go anywhere). Dubstep did disappear for most in the western pop culture scene. Skrillex made it mainstream, but once he got tired of it nobody since has been able to attain his levels of popularity. However, that doesn't mean dubstep itself is dead. The bass heavy sounds and artists analyzed in this video are from old school (dare I say "classic") dubstep. It's like saying rock died with the likes of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. New age dubstep is much harder and more mid-range focused with an emphasis on the drum heavy buildup/drop. It's still very much alive and one of the most popular genres in the EDM rave/festival scene next to hardstyle, house, and trap. There's also a resurgence of dubstep influence in K-pop music right now. Just listen to the drums, synthesizers, and structure in Pop/Stars by K/DA. You'll hear what I mean.

Definitely a lot missing from this video but overall a decent summary of the genre. Biggest misnomer is the title though. Dubstep is the biggest it’s ever been in its “underground” form. Just because it’s not creeping it’s way into the mainstream recently doesn’t mean it’s not going insanely strong behind the scenes. For anyone interested, take a look at the streamed sets from Lost Lands on the US side and Rampage on the EU side for a taste of just how big this genre still is. Dubstep artists and shows are filling stadiums and festivals with thouuusands of people, especially in North America. It’s also been making its way across the world with shows now frequently happening in Australia and across Asia.

I can never hate on the genre.... I can still remember the very first time I ever heard dubstep...being totally unprepared for what it was. It was actually a live show....Bassnectar playing the main stage at some festival....I think it was called Forecastle? Way back in 2010. Had taken a small dose of acid beforehand...and then when the music started, it honestly legit blew my mind. SUCH a good feeling letting my body and mind get lost in this totally novel sonic atmosphere. The entire crowd was one....it was one of those rare genuinely magical shows that I'll never forget.

Christopher Gray You do realize dubstep is a sub-genre of “EDM”. Not ALL Hip Hop is mainstream (i.e. Old school, Mumble, Boom Bap, etc). The same is true for those other genres. The overarching Genre maintains relevancy while Dubstep has once again become underground and maintaining true fans.

@@mrtrikxx Dubstep is absolutely not a subgenre of EDM, it started off as a derivative of a derivative of a derivative of EDM, at that point it was essentially its own thing. Origin does not equal similarity.
@mrtrikxx

Christopher Gray Dubstep is a sub-genre of EDM. What derivatives? Whats the timeline? You had DJ’s and producers inspired by other music from something new by adopting it to the form of “EDM”. If thats not how you create a sub-genre then I don’t know how else. Origin does not equal similarity? Im not even sure you understand just how ignorant a statement that is. You can trace origin through similarities. Thats literally in this video. For you, there must be hundreds of thousands of Genres. And if thats the case, then you’re too dense to have this conversation with. Overarching Genres exist and so does their separation into sub categories. Dont have to be a Genius to admit that.

It is strange seeing a video like this that isn't from the perspective of someone in the scene. For the US, here's my take- After 2015 the sound of Dubstep/"Brostep" started to evolve. The fans that liked the heavier side of "Brostep" have taken to an evolution of it called Riddim- 150 BPM headbanging music. Excision is one of the heavyweights in that arena, and even has his own (rapidly growing) music festival called Lost Lands, and is a frequent headliner at other festivals. The other side of this is best represented by Bassnectar- who has blended just about every genre together at some point. He runs so many sold out events all year it is impossible to list them all, and regularly brings in og "Real Dubstep" artists like Mala and Rusko to represent the roots. Meanwhile, there's a rad club in Denver called The Black Box that brings in guys like The Widdler, Truth, and Ternion Sound and gives the underground a voice. Also, there is internet-wide push to get Drum & Bass (or "fast dubstep" for the hilariously misinformed) the recognition it deserves since "Brostep" replaced a lot of the festival slots Drum & Bass used to hold when it blew up in 2010, not to mention borrowing a lot of the production techniques used for the bass sounds. The only "2016 decline" was the viral fade and mainstream music media losing interest (WE LIKE IT THAT WAY). If any thing, Dubstep has grown tremendously in the last 5 years. The festivals are only getting bigger/ more frequent. THIS IS WHERE DUBSTEP HAS GONE!!! To anyone who likes our music as more than just "the call of duty music I liked when I was in middle school" I urge you to find a show/festival near you and come party! -lifelong raver Peace Love Unity Respect

Maybe it's connection with Drum'n'bass and also the way it's evolution followed a similar path in the late 90s - underground -> fanatic subculture -> mass pop culture references -> post-post-post genres and the lasting effect. An interesting musical evolution part was the move to 'middy' bass (often with a sawtooth) from the deep sub-bass wobble as it moved from 'soundsystem' type raves to radios, house parties and the radio. Also cannot understate how big dubstep was to my young adulthood! Appreciate the burial shoutout who isn't always credited as dubstep but was a titan in the scene.
