I’m the original owner of a Marantz 2500 receiver I bought in 1978. It has the original plastic cutout protective for the face plate and has been serviced for scratchy pots about every five years with upgraded LED for the Tuner lights. It looks like the day I bought it with a solid custom walnut case that mimics the original Marantz case that was walnut Veneer. I have the original Manuel. Also a Marantz 6300 turntable in same condition. Completely original. 9:35

In the 70’s, there was a chain of catalog showrooms called Best Products. They had very few products on display, but the did have an impressive audio room with some the heavy hitters of 70’s hi -fi, Pioneer, Sansui, Kenwood receivers, turntables and reel to reels, including entire Pioneer rack systems. It was truly a hidden gem.

I remember a BEST Products out on Whitehead Road near Security Boulevard in Baltimore County, Maryland. You had to buy full price cash or credit at check out and be a member of the Best Products club BUT the deals were great on high quality Pioneer, Sansui & Audio Gear. If you were lucky during Christmas you could get a sweet low powered Marantz 2215 Receiver.

Part of what makes the 1970s stereo receivers great is the look of them. The wood cabinets, the polished metal, and the glass front that lights up. It all is part of the experience. I would not pay $35,000 for a stereo receiver, though.

I wonder how much my Technics SA-200 would've fetched today had I still had it. I owned a near mint condition one from 2012 to 2019. I should've just kept it because all the vintage amps I purchased afterwards had issues with capacitors or transistors, and then I just gave up on vintage amps all together, because I don't like working on vintage electronics nor do I have space to work on them. It sucks. I miss back 10-15 years ago when this equipment all still worked on its original components. Now that all this equipment is over 40 years old, the electrolytic capacitors and other components are expiring/aged out. Now my 90's stuff is the same age as the 70's stuff when I started collecting vintage gear. I hate the aging process.

I had a couple of these units including the Yamaha CR 2020 integrated amp. A TEAC A 6300 reel to reel. And a real rarity a Technics Elcasette and a pair of Pioneer HPM 1500’s. After my After my Infinity Quantum Reference speakers. The major benefit of being stationed in Germany in the 1970’s was the audio club in Frankfurt. Unfortunately my system was stolen ( pretty sure by my house mates in California ). But I was bitten by the bug and went to work in a high-end stereo shop later on and ended up with even better equipment. Including a pair of John Bauer’s active ones. I still have them 35 years old and I would be willing to put them up against any amplifier/speaker system under five grand today.

It never occurred to me (mostly because it never occurred to my parents) that some things might become “collectible.” I had a component system with an Akai cassette deck, Sansui Receiver, a Technics turntable and Advent Speakers. I don’t remember any of the model numbers because I pawned it all (except for the speakers) in a financial pinch around 1984. Makes me a little sick, but you did what you gotta do. I shudder to recall the things my folks sold in garage sales for like a quarter. Oh. I think the Advents were just called “the Advent Loudspeaker.” One tweeter failed and I tried in vain for years to find a replacement but never could. To be hones I don’t recall what eventually happened to them. Probably let them go in a move. I moved a LOT. The walnut veneer & molding was nice on those.

This is the TOTL vintage stuff. Here in Canada you'd be hard pressed to get that kind of money, even at top shape. As a part time Kijiji vintage audio seller for the last 10 years, the vintage used audio market has been dismal the last 2 years. A lot of people just don't have the disposable income to spend on this stuff anymore from my experience. At one point i had around 80 vintage audio receivers stored away. Luckily I sold most of them off before covid for a fair price. I now have about 20 units I appreciate and refuse to let go on a crappy market. That includes dozens of vintage speaker sets.

@@LennyFlorentine that is difficult to say . The Yamaha is so impressive. Size and the clean design and the dark cabinet. And the sound is way different than my Marantz. I have to go with the Marantz though because it is a quad receiver and I have a quad setup. When I play my quad pressing of Dark Side of the Moon, the Yamaha simply can’t replicate that. Also when I had the yamaha setup in the main listening my wife didn’t like that monster, because it didn’t fit in the shelf and had to sit on top. The HK730 was always a backup receiver but totally sounds amazing. Warm sound and it’s paired with some older KEF bookshelf speakers. But doesn’t compare to the Marantz or Yamaha

One thing, it's not necessarily the most powerful which sound better. I prefer having the best sounding one over the most powerful. The mac receiver MAC4100 is one of the best sounding I've ever heard.

the marantz equipment with the built in oscilloscope is such a strong feature, it spoiled me , because the display was so useful , made setting up a turntable child's play, because the needle output was displayed on the tube in real time, correctness was easy. The tube was multipurpose on a receiver, beside the pre-amplifier output displays, it also showed the wave shapes coming into the radio tuning section, with perhaps the radio tuner multipath distortion display as the most visually entertaining, being somewhat dragon like it the radio waveforms displays at times, although the channel separation displays were right up there also, notably in quadraphonic. the quad stuff wasn't popular, yet excelled when switched over into a darlington push pull bridged amp for double the rated quad power . Pare that up with a nice JBL speaker, and you'll be covered.

I wonder just how high these prices will get? I bought 2 x SX-1980s about 9 years ago for $2500 each in really good condition. I got both fully rebuilt and use them every day, they are amazing. Wonder if I should store them or keep enjoying them? I'd rather use them to be honest.

YES if you have a popular vintage audio receiver it MIGHT be worth good money. As Lenny says much depends on condition and desirability of a receiver. Premiums are paid for power in RMS Watts Per Channel. Any 1970's silver faced receiver over 130 Watts Per Channel is a "Monster" thus worth more. Known vintage receiver issues like unobtainable replacements for corroded or dying custom parts (IC boards & black legged transistors) make them less desirable. Most Pioneer SX-XX50 and SX-XX80 Receivers fetch good money. Most Marantz Receivers are golden. Most things McIntosh are Epic. I've sold great receivers via Just Audio 50\50 Consignment. 70's era vintage receiver Brand, Condition, Quality, Model History & WPC Power are key to its value!

Most known bad components have modern replacements. The toughest to fix (until recently) were any units with bad "STK" output modules.

I got my dad’s Harmon/Kardon 330c when he upgraded. Pots were crunchy. Sounded fabulous but not worth much. Only 100+ Watt stuff is worth anything. The Watt Wars was like the muscle car craze. More power than you could use just because. 😂

Well I had at one point a Yamaha I think a CR620, that I didn't keep. Almost regret that except I didn't care much for the sound but the quality of the receiver was great! One that I did regret selling wasn't a receiver but was a pair of Vocal Master speakers made by Shure. At the time I didn't have room to keep them cuz they are huge, but now I wish I had them. Terrible for music but actually decent for vocals. I am keeping my Adcom and Hafler amps, those are not leaving my collection.

I can't imagine trading my Nakamichi Dragon, but if I were to, any of the 1000 cassette decks would be high on the list, the only others on that list I'd even consider being the Tandberg 3014 and Technics RS-9900US (which really probably can't even compete in terms of its performance but, well, DAMN just look at it!). Hope it works out for you!
