Excellent video! I recently restored my 2270 - all caps - power supply, protection, tone boards, etc. Fixed old solder joints, DC bias, etc. The whole shebang. When it came to re-lamping, I too was torn about using LED. I found frosted LED bulbs that diffused light VERY well, and with new vellum, this unit almost looks like it came straight out of the box in 1973.

I bought my Marantz 2270 in 1974 as a college graduation gift to self and still use it as my main receiver. 4 months ago I had the blue dial and the red stereo light bulbs replaced and all the knobs deoxit-ed. $135 for the service. Works great after 48 years! The lights are a panoramic spectrum of different colors now with the LEDs-bright and bold long blue dial, off white function lights, light green multi path signal strength (vellum paper not replaced), and red stereo light.

I love my Marantz 2270 receiver with its gorgeous blue Vu meters which bring a smile to my face every time I power it on. I had been tracking prices on eBay for at least five years prior to finally biting the bullet and buying a unit and prices at that time ranged between $850 (Canadian) up to $1,100, so when I managed to win the bidding war for one for $750 total (bid price plus shipping), I was pretty happy and sure enough, crazy prices resumed shortly afterwards while prices have continued to escalate into the stratosphere to this day. As with purchasing other vintage electronics, especially highly sought after units, timing is everything. :)

There are quite a few technicians that restore these "22" models if you just want to buy one that's relatively "trouble free", but one thing I've noticed is that they all pretty much replace the dial lights with LED bulbs, and use "blue" bulbs instead of white, which makes the dials look "incorrect". They claim they do this because the white LED bulbs are just too bright. The blue LEDs end up looking more "cobalt" blue (like the Superscope models) than the original Marantz glow, which is more of a teal/aqua-leaning blue. I believe I'd rather still go with the original look, even if it means using incandescent bulbs. The "aqua" is part of the "Marantz charm".

I agree about the Marantz charm having a certain color! Thank you for the comment.

@@ForeverAnalog There are LED bulbs that are referred to as "warm white" which have a more "yellowy" (another new word!) glow to them which might get the dial closer to the original, but I think any LED is going to just be too bright. I have a 2230 that finally "gave up" the power transformer, so I plan to have it fully restored soon. I'm going with incandescent bulbs if at all still possible. I just love these receivers, and they literally "don't make 'em like this anymore".

In the early 70's my friend had a system I really liked. He had a Marantz 2270 and JBL L-100's. They were the only brands he said worth considering. He said whatever I do don't get epi speakers! After careful consideration, I came home with a Harmon-kardon 960 receiver and epi 400 speakers. Needless to say my friend was not impressed. The only thing that matters is that it sounds good to you! Cheers!

I also purchased a 2238B in 1978, but I've had troubles with the right channel dropping out and going completely silent, regardless of what the input is. I've had it repaired 2 or 3 times but I don't want to put any more money into it because I figure more stuff is going to break. So right now it's the world's loveliest switchable outlet.

I found that LEDs were rather strong, but I was able to rectify this by turning the LEDs about 45 degrees away from the front, maybe a little bit further even. This balanced the brightness, but retained that modern blue without the harshness that the direct light has.

i got a good deal on a vintage Harmon Kardon model and had to put about $200 into repairs, all in for under $350 and i like it but i also have a new cambridge audio entry intergrated amp for the same price and while it may not have the "sex" appeal it has more modern functions that i use, i think there are places for both but yes while the prices for vintage gear go up the value isnt what it used to be unless your a collector or looking for a specific model and know that your overpaying but your okay with that. Im into vintage film cameras and sometimes i will over pay if a excellent condition model comes up somewhere...apples and oranges but you get my drift. I enjoy your channel keep it up!

I had no idea that vintage receivers were the rage, or collectible, or highly desired today. I bought a used Marantz 2270 in '79 or '80 when I was 22-23. It had a wood case though. I paid about $100 for it I think. I bought it from a friend, in San Diego, CA, who had bought it new several years earlier and wanted to upgrade. I believed Marantz was top of the line. Their print ads always appealed to me and I thought their receivers just looked so great - I loved the blue lights and wood. The cool people I knew had Marantz, and when I acquired mine it made me feel cool too. I kept it about 20 years. I ran a turntable off of it, and at different times a cassette deck and a reel-to-reel. About 20 years ago - as the way I listened to music changed significantly - I stopped using the Marantz. I'm not an audiophile. I didn't know what to do with it and when I moved in 2003 I gave it to Goodwill. I didn't think it had much value. I thought it was old technology. Like I said I'm not an audiophile.

You can put a second piece of baking paper or tracing paper behind the acrylic to "dim" the LED's. Baking paper is a bit yellowish and makes the LED's more green-blue. Play around with the layers of paper until you are happy. The LED's are great because they last a long time and give off little heat. Great honest vid!

I have a mod. 2238B MARANTZ , that I bought new in 1976( it was bought for looks----it was bought for life). the dial light P.C. board "SNAPS" out from the back, so you do not have to remove the front plate. I have kept my unit with the original lamps.( I never had issues with the power switch) I did start to have the "CRACKLING" in 2016, and it got so bad that the safety relay would not pull in. the problem was the high gain input transistor on the right channel main amp board. that board is very hard to service/ removing to expose the foil side of the board. I replaced all the transistors on that board, including the output transistors( matched pair). all of the caps that were dying had been replaced, all caps were E.S.R. tested including leakage/ capacity( the regulated B+ would not get to specified voltage, due to the filter cap being low in capacity). all of the resistors were checked, and none were out of tolerance. two years later , I started to have "CRACKLING" issues again, this time it was in the pre- amp/ tone board. here again this board is also hard to service/ removing to expose the component, and foil side of the board. all the transistors were replaced, all caps/ resistors checked good. the boards that have not been serviced are the "PHONO" board, and the "A.M./ F.M. radio board. those boards can be serviced without board removal. when I completed the work , I did the "FACTORY" set up/ alignment procedures as outlined in the" MARANTZ" repair manual. to date I have not had any issues with this receiver. this unit gets a lot of hours put on it, it is not a "SHELF QUEEN/ DUST COLLECTOR"!!!!!.( all functions work) the worst thing that you can do to any electronic equipment is "NOT USE IT---- THE CAPS WILL DEFORM!!!!!!" if you get a unit that you are not sure how long it has not been operated bring it up using a "VARIAC"( if not available, use a incandescent lamp in series with the unit, known as "DIM BULBING", and change to higher wattage lamps as lamps go dim, this will "REFORM THE CAPS") I do not know how the board layout is on the mod. 2270, it may be an easer unit to work on. the mod.2238B is a hard unit to work on, a lot of three/ four letter words were used when I worked on this unit !!!!.( I also took voltage measurements of all windings on the power transformer, in case of xfmr failure-----the part number of that transformer is no longer available from "MARANTZ".

I have had the Marantz 2250B since high school. My only issue is the balance slider has failed and the tech who worked on it bypassed it. So it still "to my ears " sound great. I did an AB comparison of Supertramp's Crime of the Century Album (new) vs the CD version. Great album/cd and the only thing I had noticed listening to each medium is that the album sounds fuller. It is hard to find a balance slider but it is the only thing I wished Marantz would not have done since you see a lot of these on EBay for sale. In the mean time I will continue to enjoy this receiver until it has issues. Unfortunately, we do not have a vintage repair person that does restorations in my area. Thanks for the great videos

I have seen where some people have put color changing LED lights in some vintage gear. Example Onkyo Grand Integra M-508 power 💪 amps with huge meters. They are remote controlled and you can dim 🔅 and change the colors. Pretty cool 🏂 modern upgrade. Don't know if you could incorporate that into the 2270, but that could fix your dimming issue. Easiest fix, find the resistor and change the value. I think you would go with a higher value, hence more resistance? Just a thought 💭 brother.. 😀

I picked up a 2240 on Craigslist around 2000 or so. 40 bucks. One channel was mostly "out" so I worked hard on the price. I cleaned it up as best I could and got a decade or so out of it. Last year I spent 500 bucks and had the entire unit gone over from top to bottom. The tech replace all the Caps and transister gizmos. I got a big baggie back with all of the bits. It's perfect now. It's pushing a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls so 40 wpc is PLENTY! Love the unit. People now tell me that its now worth around 1500 bucks but its not for sale.

Just recently got into this hobby, first with vintage speakers and then with amps. Bought a Marantz 2235 in good condition for $350 (on ebay) but paid $400 with shipping and then spent $300 more for a gorgeous and really well made wooden box made by an outfit called Vintage HiFi Audio. The owner, Aaron, does absolutely beautiful work and I could not be more pleased. Then I came across a Marantz 2270 which had been sitting in a cabinet in someone’s home since it was brand new. The couple had died and their granddaughter and her husband were selling it. It had the original wooden box, in excellent condition. No work had ever been done on the thing but it still works and sounds great. Paid $800, which is a great price considering it’s a 2270 and it came with the box. Heck, it’s just $100 more than I wound up paying for the 2235 with its box and I think I got a really good deal on that too. Not compared to prices five or ten years ago but compared to what they go for now. Both sound great. The 2235 has a slight hum. At some point, I’ll rebuild the preamp and amp boards. The 2270 has no hum but the power button is a bit wonky. Still works but it should be replaced. I’m sure I’ll rebuild the boards on that too in time. Both still look great but at some point I’ll replace the bulbs and the velum paper. When I listen to them side by side, I actually like the sound of the 2235 just a tiny bit better. I have both in my master bedroom and I’ve been driving a set of Original Large Advent speakers. The 2235 sounds a tiny bit sweeter. That could be a difference in the way the electrolytic components have aged or it could have to do with minor design differences. I plan to use the 2270 with a double-stacked set of four Original Large Advents in my family room. Should have adequate power for that. The single set is very happy with the 2235.

I just got back into this again after a 40 year hiatus. I had received a complete package Technics system as a surprise as a teenager in 1978 from my parents, I dont remember the model numbers but it was simply the receiver, turntable, and 2 speakers. BUT, my real dream equipment stemmed from units my friends had. I always wanted my one friends Marantz receiver, and my other friends Bose 901's.(I was ok, and still am with the Technics TT). So when the "bug" recently hit me again I sort of impulsively purchased a vintage (1974) receiver (Kenwood KR-7400)someone had near me, without researching it or anything for $300 in Feb/2024. Luckily it turns out that its good and powerful, but I still crave a Marantz. So, turning to the speakers - although I still do find them aesthetically stunning, and I have found loads of 901's in all sorts of condition, from amazing to not so, Im hesitant to pull the trigger on them because they have so many drivers that may need attention down the road. So, in the meantime I purchased a set of JBL L-50's a neighbor was selling with well cared for cabinets (I also didnt know much about them but did a quick check on AudioKarma before I pulled the trigger on giving her $150.) Well it turns out the woofers werent original, but they were replaced by someone at some point with some Audio Concepts which are strong, and they do sound very good...but, while I was searching for vintage speakers the last 4-5 months I developed a craving for 2 specifically different ugly duckling models: the Advent Large fried-egg tweeter speaker, and the Dynaco (either the 35 or the 50), not the 25's. The Dynaco's are very hard to find, although Ive found a few, they arent nearby. I did find, and bought the Advents in very good shape with all their stapled-on documentation on the rears pretty intact(I paid $180). I still havent connected them so I dont even know if they work (I had to leave town for work and couldnt wire them up prior, the tweeters are stamped Oct 30, 1973 and they are the bull-nose cabinets). I STILL do have a craving to find some Dynaco 35's though, I heard them on a FB MP listing, and even with the horrible video to sound conversion, they sounded dreamy. And then the Technics turntable...I searched and searched and everything from that time period was all scratched up with broken lid hinges etc.. But I finally found one on FB market place someone had about 2 hours away. Hinges were good and it was super clean with a Shure cartridge for $115 shipped. The lid had some scratches but I found vids on YT of people polishing them with a rotary orbital (which I originally thought sounded nuts), and after working on the lid for close to 3 hours it looks like it just came off the factory line! So I'm still on the fence as to what model Marantz I'll be getting. I dont really care for the look of the ones that have all those buttons on the black acrylic face plate under the meters and station tuner display..its just too much clutter in my opinion, and I do want at least 70+ wpc. Let me know if you have any advice. Thanks. Turntable: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5zaaWCLitV2jas

@@MasterArmedforces The 2270 has the original uncluttered face plate and 70 watts per channel. It's one option. Hi Forever Analog I have a question for you: I have used my Marantz 2230 for years now playing Vinyl exclusively. Recently I aquired a Denon DCD 1500 CD player and wanted to hook up the cd player to my Marantz receiver using Red and black RCA cables. I used the Tape in inputs on the marantz and the "fixed"output on my cd player. I get no sound whatsoever. I tried some different inputs, plugged it into the AUX input on my receiver, changed from Fixed to variable outputs on the cd player, but nothing....Am I doing something wrong? Apologies for the noob question

I currently have a 2230 and really love its warm sound for listening to records. I am looking for a second receiver to complement it. I have heard that the 2270 has more bass, but tends to be a little boomy and that the 2230 has better treble. Maybe the 2275 would be more suitable? What do you think of the sound differences between the 2270 and 2275?

I enjoy watching videos on vintage stereo gear, and the 2270 seems to be one model that everyone wants right now. My story: I inherited the 2238B that my father purchased brand new in 1977, it's the same receiver my buddy and I used to power our makeshift indoor / outdoor mobile DJ system in 1977 through 1984 - good times for sure. After that experience I packed it up and moved it from state to state, and it saw little use during that time. About 2 years ago I came across a vintage Technics turntable from that era for cheap so I decided to have both turntable and receiver serviced last year... I then bought a set of new Klipsch bookshelf speakers. This old Marantz is making beautiful music one again, and the memories it has triggered are priceless.

I was all set to buy a 2270 around the same time as you bought yours. I finally figured out that AVR's generally suck for playing records. Didn't even know about outboard phono stages at the time, so I knew I needed a "vintage" receiver or amp. Long story short, a MAC 4100 popped up on Craigslist and I decided to look into that. Paid a little more for it than the Marantz (2270's were like $600 tops back then). Now currently, I'm full circle back to using an AVR with an outboard phono stage after using everything in between (separates too).

I used to buy Marantz back in 1990s for only $25.00 each at garage sales. One time I bought 4400 for only10.00 dollars. It was possible to buy Marantz very cheap way back because not many people knew the internet sale that time so there was no set price yet. Every sellers priced at their own before. But 2023 , Marantz are way over prized to me and will never pay today's price. Even now these days, you are most likely will not find anymore Marantz at garage sale cheap. The only place still good to go is at flea market. Sometimes you might find someone desperate to sell Marantz cheap. Marantz is just as good as Sanyo in sound quality. Why people pay way too much for one brand name over some other brand is beyond my comprehension to me.

The ‘Cons’ kept me away from the 70wpc Marantz 2270, so I bought a 130wpc Marantz 2330 instead. Granted, the legs for the table it sits on had to be driven into bedrock. I can’t use the receiver between 6pm & 9pm as it may trigger rolling brownouts in California, Arizona, and Oregon. Merely small sacrifices for the creamy, yet nuclear blast, sound characteristics. If Mel Tormé hadn’t been given the nickname ‘Velvet Fog,’ it would have been given to the Marantz 2330. A quaint and unassuming Receiver, if you are the Hulk or Shaq. For us mortals it’s a heavy piece of furniture housed in it’s beautiful walnut case. Mine is connected to a pair of L100s with modern crossovers and new foam grills (made to order in white color, replacing the original brown), a Marantz 6300 turntable, a Teac reel-to-reel, and a Teac CX-650R cassette deck. Usage is around 80% vinyl, some FM, an iPhone through the Aux, and tapes. Thanks for the great content.

Based on my research this unit was produced between 1972 - 1974 , this means these Marantz 2270 receivers are between 48 - 50 years old ., genuinely think you are unnecessarily nip - picking on this senior citizen of a receiver . LOL (1) The power switch failing at around this time " 50 Years Old " is well over due . Most stereo today the power switch will never fail because these newer stereo will just fail totally after 3- 5 years of frequent use. (2) Failing parts on the amp board and on other circuit boards " 50 Years Old " is well over due . I am sure not even Marantz the manufacturer expected these stereos to last this long . (3) At this age that Marantz unit needs to be properly serviced by someone who is " qualified " . (4) De-oxit and capacitors do not fix vintage receivers . Stop wasting your $20 on Deoxit . In my opinion as someone who tinkers around with wires every now and then these vintage receivers are NOT for the average DIYer and the best KZbin repair videos cant truly help you to fix these receivers properly, there is certain theoretical knowledge and practical experience that is necessary for success with fixing these highly complicated analog receivers.

ALL vintage is appreciating. The prevalence of cheap big box store a/v receivers and the insane pricing of upper end hifi separates compel those who like listening to music to go vintage. A consequence of this is some audio manufacturers are trying to capitalize and introducing vintage-ish gear now that they think will appeal to those looking for actual vintage. The problem with that is all the amp stages are now class D and the gear is made in China, with surface mount components everywhere. Top it off with ridiculous hyped up pricing. The NAD C3050LE is a perfect example. Too expensive for made in China class D. Needs to be about half that. Until they realize that people are in fact opting to go to the trouble of 1)sourcing a particular vintage piece and 2)shipping it out for overhaul, preferring it to their vintage reissue garbage, they will continue to try to ride the vintage wave clueless as to why people are going vintage in the first place. It's like, why dontcha just make them EXACTLY like you made them back in the day? Why the class D crap? Sorry, don't care about what your specsheet says, class D does not sound as good as the analog classes. Also you are charging far too much. Vintage gear found at rummage sales is better than overpriced new gear that sounds flat with no liveliness.
