I was able to be home with our son at the time, but instead of working during the day, I worked a few nights during the week and two weekends a month. My husband worked fulltime during the week. This worked for us for a couple years until my son went to school full-time. Then I went to community college, took a class here and there. It took me 12 years to complete a 2 year degree, LOL! But it's all good, did it with no debt paid for each class in cash. My husband completed his MBA part -time in the evenings and his employer paid for it, whoo hoo!! We learned money isn't everything, however, it is everything when it keeps you from the basics that stress you out on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Then it can truly suck. @@timothygibney159 Actually you’re half right. Nowadays it depends on your location and who you know as well. I work in Cybersecurity as a SOC Analyst and make 6 figures. I moved up from help desk only after working there for 6 months. You don’t need years of experience to get outta help desk. They just hired a Malware Analyst at my company where he’s making 6 figures as well. He only did help desk for a year then worked his way up the ladder. Again, everyone has different paths to where they get IT.

Is childcare free or at least very cheap in USA? I mean advice like:" go to work" when 3 out of 4 of her kids are not even a school age is a bit odd considering that childcare costs for 4 kids are likely to be more than what she could earn(in uk it would be approx £40k to £60k for 4 kids). Most mums in uk barely cover costs of the childcare while working. Unless you can get a real good salary( whigh in her case without a degree doesnt seem likely) stay at home with kids, save yourself a fortune by not laying childcare and let your husband find the best job he can get and worl st it as much as possible and u keep working part time as well

My complaint about people who want to go into 'coding' is the fact they refer to programming and software development as 'coding'. Learn how to design and write software and applications, not how to code.

If the caller is reading these comments i will remind her it takes years to get a 6 fig job. I also work IT and had to start hekp desk. Then unstable contract work well under average for years. Until you have 5 years experience and 3 professional references you have to suck it up! Your husband isn't a failure. He is just running lap 1 with 4 to go before the finish line. Get a 2nd job. My marriage ended when i started my career. Now i make the dough and its a process

Tough talk- don't take out big loans unless the degree will make you way more than enough to pay it off relatively quickly. Therefore, if you are going to take out loans, a counselor had better not take out the same size loans as a doctor, lawyer or petroleum engineer. Who cares about a dream. Live in reality.

I don't love the idea of telling someone who did their time at school, to stop and go work at McDonalds. Sure maybe get a side gig or two but in the long run, the degree in coding or IT will pay off. You have to put some time in to get those higher paying jobs. For the family, take advantage of food banks & pantries. There's avenues out there to assist, depending on the children's ages go sign up for WIC. That will at least take some pressure off. For most people, it's about staying above water.

McDonalds actually has pretty good promotion opportunities, from what I hear. Maybe that's changed in recent years, though. He also doesn't have a degree; he has a cert from a boot camp. It's better than nothing, but lots of tech companies are doing layoffs right now so it's a rough time to enter the field even with an actual degree.
