I believe the way to do it, is take what's best from the modern world, and ignore the toxic, and dangerous. Happy homesteading.

I thank it's about not paying someone for your needs.

Yes, the definition of off grid is not being connected to the main utility companies, and sourcing your needs elsewhere (solar/gas generator for electric, rainwater/well etc for water, and so on). But some people think even having electricity with solar is somehow not very “off grid”

No, not cheating. You are not attached to the electrical grid. You are independently providing for yours and your families needs. Being off grid is snubbing your nose, so to say, at the man. Lol

Off Grid means not connected to the electric grid and other utilities like water, wired phones when people had wired phones but I know a lot of people think it means living like Little House on the Prairie.......For me I am on the grid but quite far off the road, so even though we have our own little wilderness world back here technically we're on the grid......Create the world you like the best you can.

Well put. We’re all doing our best and as long as everyone is working toward self-sufficiency, I don’t think it really matters if you’re on grid or off. Growing your own food is most important, in my opinion.

I live in the south with no AC, no indoor plumbing and only a small amount of solar for charging the phone and lights. Even I would not turn my nose up to someone taking advantage of whatever is available to them to make their life better. Especially when children are involved. I wish I had access to such wonderful modern conveniences. Going offgrid isn't a completed state, it's a process of always working towards greater degrees of self-sufficiency. Best wishes to all striving towards that goal.

Definitely. We’re all doing our best with what our priorities are. I’ve found the people with the most opinions on what off grid is or isn’t are the people who haven’t lived off grid a day of their lives.

We are presently living in a camper. We find we are actually keeping cooler with a small window unit.

We almost did one for this summer! Do you find it works better than the camper AC? It’s still so brutally hot some days even with it on.

We are 100% off-grid but have everything any on-grid house might have, including air-conditioning. We use solar panels and batteries and can go 3 days in cloudy, rainy days without starting the generator, and that is using all the daily appliances. The only thing is we don't get power from the grid although it is available if we want it. A friend of mine is 100% off-grid for about 20 years now with all the conveniences one they want. When he built his house he planed it like that from the beginning. His nearest grid connection point is about 500 meter from his house but he chose not to use it. Whoever say you are "cheating" must go rough it themselves and see how long they will keep at it. Not many will.

It’s a very rewarding life in spite of all the hard work! And I’ll bet you haven’t worried once about rolling blackouts or local power outages. 👍

@@miscellaneousme Correct. We are in South Africa and although the electricity grid is running good for the last month or two, we got load shedding / rolling blackouts for 2 to 8 hours a day on a daily basis for some years before that. And we are expecting that it will start again soon. One reason they can keep the grid on for now is because so many homes and businesses went onto solar power and the grid demand is less. On top of that the grid cost per kWh went up so much that just at our house we recoup the cost for all panels, batteries and electronics in less than 4 years compared to what we would pay for grid power. So, availability and cost are the two main reasons we went solar.

@@L.V-Rider I can see your comment about there being less demand for on-grid electric and therefore more rolling blackouts are expected. But if you made another comment about something else, I didn’t see it. KZbin can be so weird!
