I have issues with everyone in the space! They promote isolationist thinking, act like homesteading is what they are doing, when they are promoting the country life instead All are to religious. Most aren’t feeding their kids properly and have way too many kids-8 billion people on the planet people! They push self sufficiency instead of promoting working at a community and regional level to improve our food systems. Promote conspiracies and anti government. It’s really sad because you can’t just find someone sharing insight into gardening, home cooking and small farm husbandry without it being “a lifestyle”.

@@Junkinsally I do appreciate your thoughts. In any space, it can become toxic and too isolationist, that’s for sure! I respectfully disagree that making it “a lifestyle” is sad, because some people truly do love living this way, myself included. But with that, I do see your point that it becomes unhealthy if you make your entire identity about it. I can’t speak to other people “not feeding their kids properly”, and your opinion as to how many kids other people have is one shared by many online, but ultimately, different people have different beliefs on that, and I respect people’s decisions to have no kids or to have as many as they can. As long as you can care for your children both physically and emotionally and are a loving and responsible parent, I personally don’t have an issue with it. Thanks for adding to the conversation and I wish you a happy weekend!

@miscellaneousme4 күн бұрын
@@TheBackwoodsHermit It was interesting that some of the hens smelled different from others. My friend who came to teach me and I were talking about it. Definitely the innards have a smell. But we concluded the difference between hens could be fat content (one was definitely fattier than the others) and it could be hormonal (where the hens were in their egg cycles). Interesting to note, one hen had extremely brittle bones. My friend accidentally snapped a leg when skinning and was surprised by how easy it was compared to other hens. Fascinating process and I aim to eventually be able to do it without another set of hands!

@miscellaneousme Excellent observation skills you've got! Many of the meat breeds like cornish cross or rangers are bred to produce the largest carcass as quickly as possible, at the expense of their health and longevity. Those seem to be the ones most likely to break their legs or drop dead of a heart attack unexpectedly. I've had the best luck with the dual purpose breeds for general self-sufficiency purposes. Good size carcass and egg production, without all the health problems associated with the extreme egg layers and meaties. Loved my Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps and Wyandottes.
@miscellaneousme4 күн бұрын
@@TheBackwoodsHermit Yes, I don’t care for those meat birds and I prefer the heritage dual-purpose birds. Yesterday we did some Australorps and Lavender Orpingtons. Even between the Australorps, some were fattier and some were not. Must be just variation on a bird-by-bird basis even within the same breed.

So true!!! It helps if you've lived in the general area of region for awhile, but even then, you still have to get to know the microclimates of that specific property. We built before living on our place... and while the house is in the perfect spot (maybe because we built on the same site as the original homestead (unfortunately, it had been torn down) house, there are winds where we put the barn that are almost counter to the normal wind patterns... it's built almost backward from what would work best! 🤦♀

@@FarmASMR Great point! Winds on a property can be very different from one plot of land to the next. I lived in my Whiteduck bell tent 2-3 days a week over the winter of ‘22-‘23 while building my first shack. Was very comfortable. I think it’s ridiculous that the government can tell someone what type of shelter they have to live in. Our species have lived in caves, teepees, wigwams etc for millennia and did just fine. We’re just a bunch of uppity apes. I remember when I tried to build my first house the government told me it was too small at 500 square feet. There was a 1000 square foot minimum. Good discussion of the pros and cons. I grew up in a trailer and actually look back fondly at that time in my childhood. One thing that seemed to fail for us regularly in trailers and park models was the plumbing. Usually they use less common piping and fittings which inevitably break on you at night, on the weekends, when no specialty stores carrying that stuff is open. I'd suggest anyone choosing to live in a trailer to stockpile those needed parts so you have them on hand when repairs are required.

There are two sides of everything you are saying. One is a person that gets offended and uses a deliberate vocabulary usually deceptive and the other that is “triggered” by people that use a vocabulary that openly shows who they are wether you like it or not. Neither 100% right and we will never know the exact how we are being subjected to the drama you invited into our lives. Most people who observe and care for the earth are caregivers. Some get lost worrying about social media. Homesteading is not a particular lifestyle. Homesteading is not a certain church. Homesteading is not a particular political view. Homesteading is a lifestyle that should make you closer to land and like minded people. If your not like minded just say I’m sorry we don’t agree and this is not why I chose this life. Keep it simple and understand your only dividing when you speak like you did in this video. God gave you two ears and one mouth so you could listen twice as much as you speak words. I most likely wasted commenting because people are caught up on the offended bandwagon. You can’t be offended if you don’t engage so don’t. I don’t think a divine power persuaded me to leave this message but if I was the one that created us and thought the terrible twos were over and at 18, 29, 49, 55, 80, 102 we were saying Johnny said something mean and I want him punished. I would probably just say nope that did not work I’ll just start over.

@@HitTheDirt You're welcome to do and not do as you'd like. I understand both (and several other) viewpoints. It's no trouble for or from me. I'm seeing a lot of homesteading videos that seem to have clickbait titles. I don't know about this particular channel, but ... saw sheep and wondered what she had to say on this topic. I think that people who are negative about how they talk about and to other people are dissatisfied with their lives and I hope they are able to figure out what they need for their happiness. Otherwise, I'm better off without them. I agree that homesteading is not a particular style of politics, religion, or even what is done on the land. I think "homesteading" is a larger idea - making a home that is closer to handmade and self-sufficiency than most people even attempt. I think that everyone can "homestead" to some degree, and that we should be encouraging others as much as possible. It's not for me to say that having a large garden is better or worse than keeping animals, or that how you keep your animals is better or worse than how I do. We are all learning and growing as people. It's expected that we will continue to learn and grow over time, changing our patterns and habits as we do so. What your particular political or religious views are might color what things you're more likely to try on your homestead, or what you think is "enough" in any particular field. It's not for me to say you are right or wrong about your limits, space requirements, or where you should spend your energy. No one can live my life for me, nor truly understand my priorities, and I don;t expect to understand anyone else's so we can all do our thing on our own places. Best thoughts for a good month, whatever that means for you.
