About the drinking culture being toxic. I don’t drink but I love going out with friends and love karaoke. One day I was at a bar with friends and this guy with them that I didn’t know came up and wanted to but me a drink. I politely declined and said that I don’t drink. He went from being nice enough to want to buy me a drink angry that I was even there in a matter of seconds. He was almost ready to beat the shit out of me for being sober but being out at a bar. That’s the kind of toxicity I don’t like.

I have some friends who are totally cool about it and I’ve met other people who don’t leave you alone about it/get angry. I also just find it strange as an adult how intensely drinking is involved in every single activity. Sometimes I just wanna do an activity not watch people get lit 😂

Tommy’s answer about trying to convince yourself you’re a good person was actually incredibly reassuring / healing. I’ve often struggled with that spiral of thinking and worrying he talked about so it was really nice to not only be able to relate to someone about those thoughts but also feel like it’s not necessarily something that needs to be approved or affirmed in order to live your life. Just do your best, be a full human, feel all your emotions and respect other beings.

Drinking culture is the culture people developed around drinking alcohol that in order to have fun you need to be drunk, and you need to keep drinking, pressuring other people into drinking because they're lame if they don't, pushing you to drink till you black out and can't remember because that means you had a great time, pushing that it's everyone else's has the problem not you like how Keith said you're toxic. Drinking culture is the toxic and negative culture that has been built around drinking not the act of drinking itself and what the drinking does to you specifically.

Exact same for me. Being the outcast and "lame" person just because you don't need to drink to have as much fun as other people is annoying. Only gets worse if you think about how in almost every party setting, there's almost always an abundance of alcohol (at least from my experience). Brought me to the point where I avoid parties altogether because I know I'll feel at the wrong place and unwelcome. And it's not even something that's wrong with me and still makes me feel guilty. Nothing wrong with a glass of red wine along to dinner from time to time. Casual drinking is totally fine (even healthy if we're talking red wine -> cancer prevention). But drinking culture nowadays is defined by excessive consume of alcohol in order to "have fun"

You can be sober amd still have fun with. your friends but most people don't see it that way and think the person is being weird but if they aren't drinking and you pressure them or expect them to it's just toxic and that's what we are talking about. The culture that drinking is what makes it fun. That you have to drink to have fun is a setting with friends or publicly or even with family. Drinking culture is defined as "the way people drink including the formal rules, social norms, attitudes and beliefs around what is and what is not socially acceptable for a group of people before, during and after drinking." As people have noted above, when people call others a "buzzkill" for not drinking, they are making it pretty clear that it's not socially acceptable to not drink around others who are. Again, as this doesn't seem to happen with other social drugs (even things like caffeine), it seems pretty difficult to say it's NOT a part of drinking culture specifically.

In my opinion, as a 25 year old who doesn't drink, the few times that I have gone to parties with alcohol involved I've felt quite uncomfortable as somehow now people who never talk to me normally are allowed to hit on me or get uncomfortably close in ways they wouldn't at a supermarket or other scenario, so I definitely think the environment/culture is often toxic

I’ve only ever been to holiday parties and birthday parties with close friends who were drinking. However, a few times in which people I didn’t know were invited my friends would start getting peer pressured by those unknown people to not only drink more, but to try to get me to drink. They would always get upset when I refuse. However, once those people would be gone or at the next party they weren’t there my friends would drink a normal amount and not even bother to ask me to drink. The toxicity and peer pressure of drinking culture is serious and kinda scary.

This series is absolutely phenomenal! Each and every time they have extra hot takes and really intriguing opinions varying in levels of insight. I resonated intensely with Keith's explanation about being a good person. I would share my concert videos, but I agree that they usually do not have good visual/audio quality. I don't have kids to lie (or not lie) to, and I don't have a pet to make an Instagram account for (although I thought my brother should with his ducks). I would not post about giving things out of kindness, but I can appreciate videos that have that (even if performative), because this world desperately needs more kind acts and more good news.

I'll agree that did throw me off a bit. Drinking Culture is very toxic, with most of it being peer pressure from either people physically being so pushy about it or with it being everyone doing it and you're the only one not. I can 5% understand when people drink for the fun of it but adding on that peer pressure for other people who genuinely don't drink or don't want to at the moment gives me such a huge ICK. Like, let people who don't wanna drink don't. Doesn't matter if they're not "cool" at least they won't get a beer belly or some health issues down the line.

Yes, exactly! Im a med student working in the hospital and Im just terrified how big problem drinking the alcohol is. I saw so many people that died because of drinking problem that took years. They got cirrhosis and 80% of death in the next 3 months. And even if we save them during this hospitalization, they will come back during next 3 months bleeding to their head and die. And saddly this is actual story of a 33 year old man. Only liver transplant can save them, but how if they still have a drinking problem? Its really terryfing and I understood it only when I saw this in hospital.

Yeah, they even admitted that it CAN be toxic, so they totally agreed. As someone that doesn't drink but grew up around drunks and some casual drinkers, I find it highly toxic, which is why I don't do it. My new neighbors even asked if me and my husband drink and we said no, they responded with "Well, we can change that.". What's wrong with not wanting to drink? The stronger the drinking culture gets the more I pull away from it.

@@cgreen9190 exactly! I don’t drink either and I find people a lot of the time ask “what do you drink” instead of “do you drink”. It’s almost expected that adults should drink especially younger adults and it’s seen as strange or wrong if someone chooses not to. I’ve heard people say something along the lines of “I can’t have fun if you’re not drinking” or something similar which is their problem not yours but a lot of people feel pressured into drinking because they want to fit in but no one should ever be pressured into drinking. It’s a very serious decision that an adult gets to make and if the people you’re around don’t respect your decision then you shouldn’t be around them anyway.

I agree with Tommy about the good person vs bad person thing. Since childhood I’ve had a mentality of thinking that I was a bad person because of how I was raised. All I ever did was try to be a good person. As an adult I realize that people are not black and white. It’s dumb to try to fit into a box. We are human and have many levels and complexities to us.

As someone who has been sober from alcohol for two years after alcohol nearly ruined my life o can definitely say that drinking culture is toxic. Not because of the people who drink, it’s not there fault, but they do perpetuate an ideal that drinking is a cool and fun thing to do. Not only is there such a big impact of drinking culture from popular music, but most things adults do revolve around drinking. Nightlife, parties, celebrations. It’s also bled into merchandising with people buying clothes, decorations, bottles, etc that say things like “wine o’clock” or “wine helps me drink”. People perpetuate this because people who drink deep down know that it’s bad for you and so whenever they see someone who isn’t drinking the peer pressure them and make fun of them until they order a drink. Meanwhile society acts like it’s completely normal to peer pressure poison into someone’s mouth. Tl;dr- alcohol culture exists because manufacturers want you to buy it and they spend billions of dollars on advertising to make sure you will think it’s sexy and cool to do so. Be safe friends.

I have something to say about drinking culture, for one of my classes I did a paper on the drinking culture in China, and it can sometimes be considered toxic especially in business situations. Where a contract can be accepted or denied based on whether u drink or not in some cases.

I once had to eat ridiculously healthy and wasn't allowed to drink alcohol for three months because I had developed a fatty liver. I started a new major in college and the first week is full of drinking games for mingling. Everytime I began to get along with people but refused their offers of shots and drinks, I got left behind and ignored for the rest of the night. I actually cracked under the pressure and on the last day of that week, I participated in drinking games and such. I made friends that day. Most friendship in college (at least here in Germany) are made in that first week, so if I didn't want to be isolated, I basically had no choice BUT to drink. Talk about toxic drinking culture.

I throw up any alcohol I drink and I got lucky enough to have friends that still enjoy playing Cards Against Humanity with me while I'm the only sober one there. I have witnessed the other side though. I tell people I can't drink and it's always "Oh I'm sorry. You're missing out on so much." Got drunk once. Hated it. Sober is more fun to me.

Here's another thing about drinking culture that Arasha and Courtney touched on a little. Toxicity of drinking culture can be about people who don't drink are treated. John Mulaney actually has a really good routine about how people who don't/can't drink are treated by those who do drink. As a young adult who can't drink due to medical reasons, it can be very frustrating to often hear the messaging that if you don't drink according to societal standards for your age then you're no fun or lame or whatever. That said, as a sociologist, drinking culture is one of my specific sociological fascinations and all the different facets of it are really interesting.

For me on the drinking culture is what happens when I even go out to a work lunch and I don't drink. People behave like I owe them a reason that I don't want to drink. I don't owe them that. But it's aggressive. I've been told "That's bad for you" when I ordered a soda but two people polishing off a bottle of wine with their woodfire pizza aren't allowed to be criticized for it.

Tommy, Keith, and Amanda highlighted just why drinking culture is so toxic and made me lose a lot of respect that I had for them. They highlighted the issues perfectly in how they didn't take it seriously, didn't care what anyone else said, downplayed the issue, and turned it around into you're the toxic one not me. Drinking culture is highly toxic because it doesn't care about consequences and doesn't see any issues, it doesn't care what others think and want, it tries to force and pressure others into drinking, it forces the idea that you can only have fun while drinking, it forces the idea that blacking out and forgetting what happened means you had a great time, it tries to create the idea that there is no problem in drinking excessively or having a toxic drinking culture it's you that's the toxic one. Courtney and Arasha pointed out so many of the negative and toxic things about drinking culture while Tommy, Keith, and Amanda couldn't care less.

drinking culture is only toxic if you let it be toxic. if your friends are pressuring you to drink when you don't want to, they are bad friends. if your friends regularly get blackout drunk and wake up with hangovers, they may have a problem that's deeper than 'the culture.' i have personally never been in a situation where i felt like i had to drink because i don't surround myself with toxic people. it's all about how people interact with drinking, not one specific culture that somehow encompasses everyone who's ever touched alcohol ever lol

I recently found out I have alcohol intolerance. It doesn’t matter if it’s only one drink, I will end up throwing up within the hour. It’s become awkward at gatherings because everyone is drinking but me and I keep getting offered drinks because no one remembers. Drinking culture is toxic to those that don’t drink as much as everyone else, and drinking has caused issues in my family.

Loved the drinking culture question. It seems like every cute girl on dating sites has to have at least one picture with a beer in their hand, and I think that's exactly what the question is about. Some good points thrown out there on the agree side. Not sure what leg the others were trying to stand on. Saying "anything is permissible in moderation" is saying "nothing is toxic until a certain line" but this question was literally asking whether that line is being crossed and I say, if such a phenomenon has been reached where drinking has become a "culture", then it's crossed the line and is therefore toxic. The only non-drinkers who are respected by the attractive crowd are those who use to be soaked in the drinking culture but became sober. People love that, but if you've never drank, then you aren't adventurous enough and you're out.

The drinking culture in my friend group has always been pretty aggressive. We've grown out of it somewhat, but it was really very bad for a long time. For sure non-drinkers have been singled out at parties from time to time and it wasn't until I grew up a bit that I understood it was toxic. Now I'm happily dry and can remember every weekend 🙃 So totally agree for toxic.
