Literally one of the things talked about in Psych 101 is things like personality tests, astrology, and the MBTI types, being intentionally vague so as to not exclude a majority of people. For the class I was in during my freshman year, we were given a list of the descriptions for the astrology signs and asked to pick which description went with which sign, not one person was able to guess them all correctly, and a vast majority got even less than half. Also, there is self-fulfilling prophecy, the more you believe it, the more you lean into those behaviors, which only reinforces your belief. Of course, sometimes some of that stuff will be right, a broken clock is right twice a day.

MBTI is based on real psychology and it does work as a system to categorize people in (although it doesnt really do much for the scientific community admittedly) , theres also the cognitive function theory of mbti that is nicer to use, also the personality test as a concept is obviously a valid method researchers use, but yeah, those on the internet are definitely not scientifically validated i would also like to add that aside from the self fulfilling prophecy, theres also the barnum effect, and also the fact that all humans want to be both included in something and have a need to stand out, so astrology fills up those 2 needs perfectly, no wonder its so popular, it brings people together in a structured way

*THE BARNUM EFFECT* The Barnum effect is manifested in response to statements that are called "Barnum statements", meaning general characterizations attributed to an individual are perceived to be true of them, even though the statements are such generalizations, THEY COULD APPLY TO ALMOST ANYONE. Such techniques are used by fortune tellers, astrologers, and other practitioners to convince customers that they, the practitioners, are in fact endowed with a paranormal gift. The effect is a specific example of the so-called "acceptance phenomenon", which describes the general tendency of humans "to accept almost any bogus personality feedback". A related and more general phenomenon is that of subjective validation. Subjective validation occurs when two unrelated or even random events are perceived to be related because a belief, expectation, or hypothesis expects a relationship. For example, while reading a horoscope, people actively seek a correspondence between its contents and their perception of their personality.

It's literally about that, one of the biggest things in astrology is how Mercury being in retrograde affects you. Like Astrology literally says that when Mercury goes into retrograde it will throw your entire life into chaos. And yet they're like nah nothing to do with planets and hell Courtney even says that astrology has nothing to do with changing you yet THAT IS THE ENTIRE BASIS OF ASTROLOGY. The basis of astrology is that your star sign decides who you are as a person and that Mercury in retrograde and stuff like that will throw your life into chaos and change you. On top of that her explanation of astrology LITERALLY disproved astrology and she didn't even realize it. Cause that's all astrology actually is, it's making large generalized categories that apply to as large of a population as possible. And icing on the fucking cake is after they're like planets have nothing to do with it and Keith goes "I heard Mercury is in micrograde" and they ALL agree with him like you all just said planets have nothing to do with it yet are now saying a planet has something to do with it. Sometimes I can't help but question the intelligence of people that believe in astrology, you have 4 people here who all believe in astrology yet none of them actually know what astrology is and all of them have a completely different belief on what astrology is. That should tell you something about astrology.

It’s not that your fate is written into the stars (though some believe that) it’s that there may be patterns in the universe. Okay so I'm not die-hard for astrology buuuut... cusps are a thing. Someone born at 23:59 and someone born at 0:00 the next day isn't expected to be that different. To me, believing in astrology isn't done using scientific basis. If someone argues against it with science they're missing the point, just like they would if they tried to dissuade a superstitious grandfather from smoking out a house with sage. I'm usually most irritated with people who go the "enlightened atheist" route. Y'know, the types who just HAVE to tell people of any religion that they believe in fairytales etc. It's just antisocial behavior at its core. @@mayle2010 the thing is, like Kimmy points out, the descriptions for the Zodiac signs, and the Horoscopes themselves are deliberately written extremely vaguely, so that any person can find it connecting to them in some way. It’s a form of trying to categorize people that’s really only effective if you’re accepting of it. You could however easily read the horoscope for any other sign and find that it has something to say about you at any moment because of how vague it is. Same as the Personality Trait thingy, that’s also written really vaguely so that when you take the test and get the results you accept it because of how it seems to be defining you perfectly, but if you take the time to read the descriptions for the other traits that weren’t assigned to you according to the test, you are bound to find certain aspects of each trait that corresponds to you. The thing with these things is that they are trying to categorize people into a certain amount of categories, so that it’s easier to say “this person is this, and this person is that”, when in reality, it’s impossible to categorize people in this way since everyone has it’s own personality that’s impossible to pin down to just four or five letters, or one Zodiac sign. We all have a certain amount of each trait within us and it’s impossible to just set it down to those certain things. Of course you can to a certain extent say which traits are dominant within us, but we still have some aspect of the rest of them as well, and each person has it in differing levels

Agree to Disagree: 1. When you're leaving a hotel room, you should tidy it up. 2. You tip your waiter, regardless of service. 3. You should always tell your significant other they look good. 4. Respect your elders. 5. If someone is offended by what you said you should always apologize.

1. I completely agree, don't make the lives of the cleaners harder. 2. Only one exception being directly disrespctful treatment. You shouldn't feel obligated to pay someone extra if they are rude and/or aggressive. 3. Agree. 4. Elders don't always deserve respect. 5. Completely disagree, context is important. It isn't your responsibility to manage everyone's emotions.

1. Absolutely. Hotels actually charge people for destruction. 😂 2. YES. They might have had a bad day! 3. You should always support your s/o, but it is 100% okay to tell them if they don’t look good. If I’m wearing something that might not look nice or flattering, I want my husband to tell me. He would also want me to look my best and vice versa. ❤️ 4. For me, it’s part of what I believe. Sometimes, it’s hard to give respect because they might demonstrate a bad trait or unkind words, but never disrespect them to their faces. 5. ALWAYS be okay with apologizing. Swallow that pride and APOLOGIZE.

1: Agree, clean up after yourself, make things easier for housekeeping. Not saying you have to dust or vacuum, but don't leave trash everywhere. 2: Disagree. You don't deserve a tip if you're rude. It's fine if you're having a bad day, but don't let that effect how you treat other people. 3: In between. If you don't like, for example, an outfit or hairstyle, you're free to say so, as long as it's not in a way that will offend your partner and you let them know it's just your opinion and they can do as they please. And if you do like the outfit/hairstyle/etc, absolutely tell them. But if they ask you and you don't like it, don't lie and say you do. 4: As long as they don't disrespect me. 5: Depends on what they're offended by. If they're being homophobic, for example, and are offended by being called out on it or argued with, nope, no apology for them.

1. Yeah ofc, obviously youre not obligated to deep clean it and make the beds etc, but i always get any trash out and put everything back where it came from. 2 . Yes always tip your waiter, if you can afford it. They would have to be a total douchebag to make me mad enough to deny a tip, which has never happened to me and ive always had the money to tip and still be able to afford food etc. 3. No not true, you should be able to tell the truth to them rather than lying to them. If my s/o got super fat and asked me if they looked bad i would probably say yes. 4. Yes respect your elders , but i wouldnt take flak from a random old person because theyre just as , if not more susceptible to being crazy than youth. 5. No ,false. people being offended shouldnt effect whether i apologize. People get offended by alot of things. If i said something just with the intent of being offensive, and without provocation, then id apologize

1. It's a kindness, but not obligatory. 2. I'm too poor to be charitable, but I also don't eat out for that reason, so 🤷 3. You should always lift them up, but you can also be honest about whether you like their fit/cut. 4. You don't automatically get more respect because you're older, but you should give common respect to everyone. 5. Yes - if you upset someone, even on accident, it's common decency to apologize. That doesn't mean you have to retract your opinion or that you did something wrong, just that you acknowledge they were hurt and that's not a good thing.

I also think that by looking at "your description" you may start to fullfill that expectation. Meaning it only fits because you start to act like what you're told to act like.

It’s not even a debate, like it’s proven fake. It’s all the Barnum effect, a self fulfilling prophecy. People can believe whatever they’d like, it doesn’t cause harm so go nuts. But it’s definitely fake lol

Yeah I side with Keith when it comes to telling someone if they want to go into a career. If they wanna become an Imagineer, train driver, architect, politician, lawyer, voice actor, etc then they should go for it. As long as they believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams, you will go far
