“In 2019, Tyler, the Creator released his Grammy award-winning album, IGOR. Tyler takes on the character of Igor, who is in love with a man who is dating another woman. Before this album was released, Tyler had come out as bisexual publicly around 2017. As the final song, ARE WE STILL FRIENDS? wraps up the story with Igor finally coming to terms with the fact that he will never have a romantic relationship with this man. Igor is begging to maintain any sort of connection with this man even if that connection is never the same as it was. Including themes of yearning and abandonment, we found this message to be omnipresent in human life. When making the choreography for this song, we tried something new; typically one person in our group will choreograph a song, but we challenged ourselves to make this more of a collaborative experience for the group. Several of us met together to bounce ideas off of each other having a deep discussion about the meaning of the song, really capturing the meaning through our dance moves.” - Giovanna Sudol
