I'm really happy to hear! Thank you very much! The video ended up being much much much bigger of a challenge to make than I anticipated. Especially with everything else going on around it. I have about 100 pages of text, 30 pages of novel information, and this video was all of that filed down to about six pages... That's why I had to be a bit vague for I couldn't going to more detail in certain areas... It was extremely aggravating to figure out what to keep and what not to keep an how to set this up for future discussions due to that. But I'm happy that it's now done, and I can move on. Hopefully I can start producing videos more regularly. And I hope to see you around! Take care!

I feel like words are a form of lossy compression of information. Let's take this set of words as an example: "this is a box". To accurately describe the reality of the object in question, I would have to describe it in depth (size, form, temperature, color, composition, position, arrangement of molecules...). That would take a virtually infinite amount of time. However, I can compress all that information into a few useful words to put that object into a comprehensible category. Therefore, "this is a box" is a very vague and incomplete representation of reality, but this is what we humans need to hear in order to communicate efficiently.

Yaaaaay hi Dale! I agree with you Dale. Words are based on how we experience reality ourselves. It also goes beyond words. Music is produced for human ears. As humans can hear sound vibration frequencies from minimum 20hz to max 20,000hz (20khz) that means that basically all music will have frequencies at 19 or lower and 20,001 or higher completely cut off. We understand a lot about dogs nowadays so I will use them as an example. Some dogs can hear sound vibrations up to 45khz which is insanely high compared to humans. If dogs were capable of listening to music, they'd think that humans listened to really boring music because they'd only hear low notes (lol I guess some of you people love loud bass though). Imagine listening to music that only how low frequencies like bass and low-mid like the lowest string of a guitar. That's how most dogs perceive our music. It's not impossible to make music that works for dogs, but it might be pointless as dogs do not enjoy music as far as we know. They can associate certain sounds as good or bad or in between. Say you train a dog to get a treat every time it listens to an Iron Maiden song but gets a punch in the face every time you play Donald Trump's voice, then it would react accordingly to these sounds (happy or most likely scared). But they (as far as we humans know) do not listen to music and gain pleasure from it by itself without association. Softwares like Pro Tools and Cubase are programs designed to produce music, make it sound, crisp, clean, clear or to design and synthesise new sounds etc, but these amazing and powerful tools limit you to the human's hearing spectrum (20hz to 20Khz). Maybe you can get a 3rd party addon to widen the spectrum and allow you to produce it according to dogs' hearing, I'm not sure. Us humans are so dominant in the world and we're making the whole world work around the way we desire and that's fair enough, it's not our fault that we flourished in survival and it's not our fault that we want to continue to live a happy and convenient life, it's in our nature. Looking forward to your next video Dale!
@ElchiKing8 жыл бұрын
Well, if you play an actual instrument which does not use lowpassfilters like a nonelectric guitar or a flute, the dog will at least hear the higher overtones. And who knows? Perhaps they don't perceive sound as base+overtones but rather as base+over- and undertones

Ok, soo many things. 1. The finger spelling is so cool, and Keller being able to learn to speaker is insanely fascinating. 2. You have so many sources in the description, which I know makes us happy ;) 3. Universal grammar. Great debates among linguists past and present. This stuff is straight out of my linguistics class. (and so will my video be) 4. I think you would have enjoyed my class, too. 5. noticed that your bottom-right YT watermark is the old version of your logo 6. 12:30 are you kidding me?? this editing is so legit haha 7. Dude I still want to share some stuff from 1984 with you. It was all about reducing the words that existed within a language to prevent potentially dissenting thought. Such good stuff. 8. Lol playing the Michael Stevens quote again bc Vsauce ;) 9. The channel link icon (you on the brain bigger and with tf in the bottom right)...I like that for your main logo actually. Damn good video Dale.
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
1. Helen Keller is definitely a phenomenal example! She wrote about 10 books at that. 2. I'm actually missing a few sources at that, I've been researching this video for so long that some things I have lost track of. Hopefully I can collect everything. Haha 3. Universal grammar is a fascinating concept, though I till felt it was important to discuss opposition for the sake of this video. The underlying point I was trying to make doesn't necessarily depend on universal grammar, it's just helpful because it's been well researched. 4. Probably! I'm planning on taking some linguistic classes this semester if possible. 5. Yeah I haven't updated the watermark yet, it's a bit of a hassle. I'll probably get to it a few weeks. 6. I'm happy you like the editing, the problems my computer is giving me was making it's a nightmare though... Haha Happy it looked okay in the end. 7. 1984 is on my list of things to read. I wonder if I could get an audiobook, probably can make time for that. 8. "Lol playing the Michael Stevens quote again bc Vsauce ;)" Well of course, haha. ;) 9. The thing about the brain is that's much more likely to change than the tf symbol. So I'd rather the symbol be more iconic than the brain itself. But I do you get where you're coming from. I'll think about it. ;) I'm really happy you like the video, now I await for yours! I bet they will complement each other in some respects too. Take care, Matt.

I'm glad to see that you're back, Dale! This video was really well edited, it was very impressive. One thing that really blew my mind in this video was how you pointed out that thought doesn't require linguistics. For whatever reason, that's never come to mind before, as I've always wondered how deaf people think. Also, my mother speaks 3 languages (English, Japanese, and Bengali), and once I asked her what language she thinks in, and she replied saying she thinks in whatever language she's speaking at the moment. So yeah, I just thought that was kinda neat.

I'm really happy to be back, and it's always nice to hear from you! And I'm happy to hear you found the video impressive! Indeed, I felt it was important to point out because it can feel almost instinctual. "We think in words, but about it?" We really don't, we just use it as a means to help organize thought. If you have a time, I would totally recommend you check out that video that I recommended by the guy who I got that information from. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h16lkIKEf654mac That's actually a really interesting mixture of languages to know, kudos to your mom. I know you yourself have interesting accent, I was wondering if other languages might influence that? That being said, appreciate the comment! Take care!
@urbfilms8 жыл бұрын
+Think Fact I'll be sure to check out the video! As for my accent, I guess it's mostly American, I've lived in Flint, Michigan for most of my life up until 2 years ago, though my parents have always spoken Bengali around the house, so I guess that has sorta influenced the way I speak (although I myself can't speak the language). Also, yeah, I'm kinda amazed that my mother has learned those 3 very different languages. I'm less impressive, I can only speak one language haha

I feel that words do represent reality (as humans perceive it of course, there's really no other way, they're our words). When our perception changes we'll add new words and change old definitions if it's really necessary, and surely some words will eventually be completely abandoned because they'll become useless to us. I agree that we need to be able to accept change and not be so afraid to be more fluid in our language because our view of the world is also fluid and ever-changing. It wouldn't make sense to have a rigid language system, and I don't think it is, language evolves all the time. It's true words can't really encompass the world beyond the "veil of Maya," but I feel like that's impossible anyway because words are on our side of the illusion. I'm so glad you're back! And I love discussing language so much - I was considering becoming a translator for a while, maybe in Arabic or Italian. But it definitely is a difficult job, and also kind of an art in a way. Anyway, thank you so much for the video! And it's so awesome that Michael Stevens is in it! Your video about him was the first one I watched!
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest challenge is to get people to understand the legitimacy of mechanisms that will allow us to acquire information over things we can't observe with our biology alone. Often many of the issues in our society that plague anti-scientific ways of thinking, are people who are not willing to accept anything they can understand for themselves at the moment or through their own personal research... Language will definitely change, we change. Language reflects us. That being said, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store when it comes to the development of language involved in these particular fields. Thank you very much for the comment! Language is extremely fascinating and plays a really fascinating part in anthropology! You know (at least) three languages, that's extremely impressive! I would've probably been able to learn French growing up, I live in a border town alongside the US and Canada and I have a lot of bilingual French family in Canada. But after 9/11 it became more of a hassle to go over. Kind of a bummer. Been trying to motivate myself to learn Spanish and maybe Arabic! Haha Thanks for sticking around! It's always been my dream to get Michael involved one of my videos. I couldn't be any happier. Hope to catch you around!

Think Fact - Love the video, and it hit on my love of precision. I have always been this way, I believe, and my time in the field of custom cabinetry, which I keep as a hobby, seems to back this up. It has occurred to me recently that I struggle for the right phraseology more often. It seems to me that as we get more precise in science, in every aspect, we need to be more precise in ways to communicate what we learn. However, the verbal education doesn't seem to be keeping pace. Spellcheck and more recent grammar checkers have enabled the most pedestrian of writers to sound competent, but a true grasp of linguistics is being left behind, for the most part. Is "true literacy" going to be something of a rarity?

Hey, Dale, I really enjoy the style of your videos! You really stepped up the production for his one, and I appreciate that. Recently I've been frustrated with myself because of the inherent contradictions in my brain, (if that makes any sense) and I am happy for the reminder that my words and even my thoughts aren't a perfect representation of absolute truth. Also, if you haven't checked out the channel 'Xidnaf', you really should. He has a ton of videos on lots of different aspects of language, which you might find helpful. Thanks for your videos, your content is always top notch!

Hey Leslie, I appreciate that! I tend to get more comments of people telling me they don't like my video style, but I think that simply because those who don't like it are more compelled to say something about it. I like my style, its original, and compliments how I like to explain things quite well! I'm happy to hear. And yes, I really stepped it up for this video, specially considering I've had quite a bit of time to make it. That's a good point, I often encounter people who are extremely stubborn to think "outside of the words." As if the words we use are flawless. So it's fascinating that you yourself are in an opposite situation sometimes. That might be for the better in some cases. ;) I've seen his channel before, but it's been a while so thank you for the recommendation! I love to learn about language so I feel his content up my alley! Thanks for the comment, and I have to see you around!

This reminded me of a situation I've been in several times with friends of mine: We talked and started debating over different aspects of topics, only to find out, after arguing for some time, that we interpreted certain words differently. E.g. do you know the first name of everyone in you family? It depends mostly on your definition of family. Do you count your auntses? Your cousins?The cousins of your parents? The husband of your grandmas sister? I think it can be very helpful when in a discussion you get stuck or it doesn't seem like you will ever find consensus, to check, whether all of you think of the meanings of words the same.

Excellent video, Dale. Simple answer to the question-I agree. Also, the concept of those parts of speech expanding to deal with the additional perspectives of time travel. (adverbs), {prepositions}, and arguably most importantly [verb tenses], What do you think? e.g. 'I [will/did] see you ({after} last year but {before} today).' or 'I [would have/did] see.n you ({in} a version of tomorrow {that stems from a different version of} yesterday).'

Hey, it's been a long time! Always nice to hear from you. :) I definitely think the way we talk about things (in the proposed context) is influenced by how we experience the flow of time, but someone could argue that introducing time travel could require us to rethink particular types of words, for sure! How exactly do you do that, I don't know. Most definitely a fascinating concept, and having terminology to properly reflect that would be helpful. (I'm going to do that three days ago), sounds odd, but maybe expanding upon words by adding special endings may make emphasizing on things you are going to do in times that have already passed make grammatical sense. But we will always be experiencing life at a constant rate of time, but the ability to move through it freely could definitely cause for some interesting situations. Thanks for the comment! Hope to see you around in the future! :)

I came to conclusion that human interaction is particularly good at communicating concrete ideas. Like: fruit, there, big tree or lion, run. We can all objectively observe these things and come to conclusion about what those words mean. But abstract terms are bit tricky. What does love mean to you? or danger? No one can observe other people's feelings and personal reality inside their heads so we have to rely upon imperfect word representations. If you are going into conversation with another person, you have to keep that in mind and never jump to conclusions about the meaning of the words and always see it in the context of the person.
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
That was actually something I was going to touch base on! I do feel like explaining things at a very general sense works very well with language. But the second we get to a point where we do need to understand things at a much more detailed level, it can become complicated. If we are constantly using the broad concept of an item or action to describe every scenario, especially in scenarios that require understanding something in a very specific or particular manner... It can cause issues. Abstract terminology is very tricky indeed, especially when it comes to who gets to decide what's included into a definition or not and whether it's reasonable. Maybe material for future videos! Thanks for the comment and take care!

I love SOMA, such an amazing game! I'm not one for the horror genre, but that was absolutely phenomenal. Tried the static effect, ended up sticking with it! It was a great compliment to the overall presentation I feel! Thanks for the comment, I'm really happy you love the video! I agree with you, I think words relate with reality as we see it rather than reality in itself and I for one believe language is a fascinating and organic thing, a beautiful one. Language is created by us, who use it. In other words: I'll be damned before I use words like "courriel" (in French) without sarcasm.
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
Language is definitely fascinating! It will be extraordinarily interesting to see how it keeps developing as we find ourselves in positions where we can go beyond our own biology to obtain information in order to create words out of. Though I definitely agree on the fact that that it is truly beautiful. The amount of creativity that is a result of language is pretty amazing! Thank you for sharing!

I think it's important not to be too attached to definitions in the sense that you're unwilling to ever let any one change no matter what (of course within reason). Particularly in the context of definitions being expanded upon, or restricted. So many people feel like words perfectly describe something that should never be altered, or just fight over words (look at the marriage debate). But it is complex. You can also get people trying to claim we should expand words to complement their movement/agenda, or leave them unchanged. That can be issue prone, to say the least. It's complicated... Haha

Good one. As a mathematician, I sometimes tend to define reality as what I can describe and perceive and check how the world around me fits into this scheme ;) Btw: "unacceptable" contains (etymologically) a fourth morpheme: "un-ac -cept-able", since to accept is derived from Latin "accipere" which is composed of "ac" (ad; meaning "to", "at" or "up to") and "capere" (which means everything in the range of "to take", "to get", "to grab", "to catch" etc.)
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
And that's a good point, I think one could definitely make an argument that reality is truly two separate things. What the perceiver gets from it, and what it actually is. It's fascinatingly complex but really seems like it should just be simple. I almost discussed the potential of "unacceptable" containing four morphemes, the problem was you had to reach into other languages in order to get what the English term within itself has come to encompass as a single unit. That's a whole other layer I was going to talk about but it took up way too much time. This video was cut down to such a degree it pains me. The original script with information that wasn't repeated, contained about 30 pages of information. But over 100 pages of just text. This script, about 6 pages... So as you can see, it got filed down quite a bit. Haha That said, it's always awesome to hear from you! Take care.

Fun fact, this is a perfectly legal word in German (even if such words are mostly used in word-games): Donaudampfschifffarhtskapitänskajütentürschlossschmiermittelhersteller. I have no idea how many morphemes are in there...
@ThePatlack8 жыл бұрын
It means: producer of lubricant for the lock on the cabin door of the captain of a steamboat traveling on the Danube.
@ElchiKing8 жыл бұрын
I've counted about 12+/-1 morphemes
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
The is an awesome word, thank you very much for sharing! German is a fascinating language, I was actually going to try to include information over it into the video but found that it was becoming way too timely. And I don't think I would know where to begin counting the morphemes in that. Haha Take care!
@ElchiKing8 жыл бұрын
Down to standard German expressions: Donau-Dampfschifffahrt(s)-Kapitän(s)-Kajüten-Türschloss-Schmiermittel-Hersteller. Some of these can be broken down in to more parts, some don't. We get 1) Donau=danube 2) Dampfschifffahrt consisting of 2a) Dampf=Steam 2b) Schiff=ship 2c) Fahrt=drive/ride 3) Kapitän=captain 4) Kajüte=cabin (on a ship) 5) Türschloss consisting of 5a) Tür=door 5b) Schloss=lock 6) Schmiermittel consisting of 6a) schmieren=to lubricate 6b) Mittel=tool 7) Hersteller=fabricant or consisting of 7a) her (Prefix to indicate the direction towards you) 7b) Steller (the one who positions something) Counting those, we get 11 or 12 morphemes. And since it is always the last word which gets described we have a meaning of fabricant of (a tool to lubricate=lubricants) for (locks on the door=doorlocks) which are at the (cabin of the captain of a ride with a steamship on the danube. However, "Donaudampfschiffahrt" could also be a term describing the general shipping on the danube with steamships and "Kapitänskajüte" as the cabin of the captain (in general). With this grouping we would get "fabricant of lubricants for doorlocks of captain's cabins in the business of steamshipping on the danube" (Also there might be more morphemes, since for example the suffix "-er" indicates, that it is someone who does something, while a suffix of "-ung" would describe a general process; i.e. Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskajütentürschlossschmiermittelherstellung would be the process of producing lubricants for doorlocks of captain's cabins in danube steamshipping ships.)

As a developer I usually find hard to put in words certain logic, data stream or behavior. I read sometime that this is common among mathematitian, developers and other abstract thinkers and it's a demonstration of the thought as a diferent process than talk; it is also however not common.
@ElchiKing8 жыл бұрын
I know what you're talking about. And just recently, I gave some could a geometric meaning (in n dimensions, but who cares) and it was much easier to imagine.
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
That's an extremely fascinating point. I mean, like I setting the video, thought doesn't necessarily require language at all. So it makes total sense that you would find yourself in situations where you can understand something through a particular means but not necessarily know how to put it into words while preserving the thought. The coolest part about all of this though, we are living in an age where we are currently figuring the stuff. So it will be fascinating in the next couple decades if we can really figure out the entire context around communication and understanding. Who knows, always nice to hear from you!

Micky Mus I think what Pwasma Dwagon meant is that you were a little rude and that you didn't explain the word. just came back to drop this bombshell in our lives. but i think a LOT of people need to watch this video. maybe I'm baised but i really think we live in a day and age where people are more open about sharing experiences and when those experiences are shared new words will appear to easier describe them amongst said group. I think as we progress we will see a lot of resistance to experiences we deem as illegitimate and that will snow ball in a restrictions of those words. language is soooo cooool😍
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
I've been working on this video for a really long time, and I had a cut so much... But I feel like what I was able to condense it down to is still quite meaningful! I'm happy you thought so! Language will always be constantly changing, but in the context of vocabularies it's always trying to balance out the accuracy and efficiency of the words we use and what is the best way to achieve then both. We need to break up reality into units, and because most things in reality are complex and often work on a spectrum, having enough terminology to break up that spectrum you have its components properly described can be extremely important. But it's all about understanding what that may need to apply to. Thank you for the comment!

Cool video. Would've been more concise to say Words are descriptive rather than prescriptive; the definitions for which change based on usage. Recommendation: pause between points to let it sink in. Vsauce is good at that. Recommendation: too many things in the video to focus - frame is always too busy, and too much in motion.
@thinkfact8 жыл бұрын
Definitely, that being said I feel that for the sake of this video it was extremely important to truly break it down to a very detailed level so that way I can expand upon it later. In terms of the constructive criticism, I appreciate it!
