The flywheel issue isn’t a huge deal. We have a customer that’s on his 4th set of flywheels but motors have been great for over 2k hours now. Plus Yamaha just keep paying for the new flywheels. Not sure how long they will continue to do so.

Keep in mind with the F350A came out in 2007, and it was absolutely revolutionary. All other 4 strokes only went to 250 at that time. Not only did it have 100 more horses, but it had the torque necessary to allow center console builders to build bigger models. The awesome F300 did not appear until mid 2009 I believe. I believe the F35Oc ended in 2021 not 2020. COuld be wrong. THe RPM range that caused the fly wheel problem was between 3500-4200 RPM, which is a very common cruise RPM range.

If I'm not mistaking the flywheel on that engine is also a dampener not to be confused with a balancer such as a balance shaft. A dampener is used on most larger 4S engines gas and diesel. The dampener absorbs crank shaft harmonics that can break shafts or take out bearings. Dampeners haven't been used on outboards until the 4S engines became large enough to need them. All engines have a critical speed where the harmonics meet from end to end that will damage things where they meet on the crank shaft. Some engine harmonics are so far outside the operating range they don't need the dampener. Most race rules don't allow the rubber type dampeners but require special dampeners that won't come apart. Our 903 Cummins dampeners that had timing marks we had to check and we had red lines at a specific RPM range we couldn't run. WE had to run above and below it. Most likely the dampener just couldn't hold up to the harmonics and the harmonic band is probably in a normal running range. If you look at any recent (past 60 years) you will see a rubber type dampener on all stern drive and inboard gas and diesel engines and I have seen a few of them come apart especially the 4 cylinder 2.5L and 3.0L.

A crank shaft is under complex alternating loads as it turns. Each piston firing causes it to flex slightly where the connecting rods are attached, in between the journal bearings. In addition, there is a large heavy flywheel on one end of the crank. So every time the boat hits a wave, the rotating flywheel mass is thrown forward causing random flex in the crankshaft. So, if you took a snap shot of the crank in motion, and magnified it a zillion times, it would look like sort of like a sine wave. As you can imagine, this is highly dependent on firing order.

When you said the firing order for the F350, I immediately knew it was the same for a SBC 350 lol

I have 2012 Yamaha f350 very reliable the only problem I have is the oil sensor said low oil pressure but after shutting down the engine and restarting again no messages

The firing on the F350 5.3 liter was different along with the cylinder placement. All v motors Yamaha makes have #1 cylinder is on the starboard side. The 350 has it on the port side.

Had a head fail (cracked) after 3 years. Stored in a heated building. No power heads available. Multiple flywheel replacements

I know what me means WOT and low rpm. I did this to a 3.0l Mercruiser. You trim up and do a wheelie, and it bogs the engine. Kind of like trying to accelerate in 5th gear in a car from 10 mph. I did this for like 5 minutes and the engine made a knocking noise, probably from heat. The engine ran really rough after and needed a head rebuild because it got so hot that the valves mushroomed. There was no compression on cylinder 3. I have a video showing what the idle looked like after the damage.

Tnx for a great and interresting video. Question: I have a f350 V8 2013 (B version I guess). I’ve had trouble with low oil pressure a couple of times, and now the barbord side stopped going (all 4 cylinders), as in a safemode. Turned out that I have alot of metal shavings at the oilscreen witch lowered the oil pressure. Where does it come from???????? Heard of it before? Best regards, scared as hell // Anders from Sweden

Hey Anders, that all sounds really unfortunate :( I don't think there is good news without looking into it, but finding metal shavings is bad. Most likely a planner bearing on the crank has failed and it is chewing that up, and it really has to be rebuilt in this case. One thing you can do is take the shroud off of the flywheel, then try and pull up on the flywheel. You will probably find that the flywheel will go up and down, which is a serious issue. Sorry to hear all this, you really need to have it looked at though, but it does not sound good to me :(

Can you make a video on the smaller outboards? I’ve had everything from a 2006 Suzuki DF6, up until my brand new(bought this week) Suzuki DF25A. It seems like only the larger outboards get any recognition. I’ve had a F15 Yamaha, a 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke, 8hp Yamaha 2 stroke. I’d like to see your insight on the little motors. Thanks! -Andrew

Hi, I have problem with f 350 leaking oil on the std side under the plastic from the crank breather No pressure when engine running Engine works fine Only when engine is trim all the way up oil leak What is the problem?

Hey, hope you've figured this out by now, but I couldn't tell you what the problem is, when looking at oil leaks, they could be all kinds of different things, because something could leak but oil has pressure most of the time, so it could be leaking from one location and spraying it in a different location. You'll have to just follow the oil leak to figure out it's true source :/ Sorry

Hey great video! My family has actually owned the same house in key colony right down the bay from shelter bay for 35 years and we have kept several of our boats there. I just bought a bought with 2014 generation bs and it has the tilt limit problem that you mentioned on the middle engine that hits the transom rod holder. How do I reset it?

I’d love for you to talk about mercury 2.5 efi’s. I have a 1998 200 efi jet that I run on shallow rivers. It has 396 hours and I had the top two pistons fail which over the winter I rebuilt the block, and new pistons, rods all around. It was strange to me that it failed with such low hours. It was my grandpas boat and it did sit. Which I know sitting is the worst for boats. Anywho, what’s your overall opinion on 1998 merc 2.5 efi.
