💯 that first point is spot on. Growing up, the coaches of my teams had a kid playing and him and his friends on the team got all the playing time while I sat the bench. I couldn’t learn/grow with the game of bball. The minute I moved states and had unbiased coaches who weren’t a parent, I immediately blossomed and developed a strong game. I intend to be unbiased as I am starting out coaching. Bribing a coach is wild 😂

We don’t talk to parents . Too many factors play into creating the lineup and every kid has their own unique talents and abilities. Sometimes the playing time just happens , it’s never personal in the moment
@bballcoachallen Жыл бұрын
not sure how it is where you are, here we need to keep parents up to date or else if a kid gets 0 playing time they start getting mad... full communication, and transparency can help mitigate issues

Good info, my kid is only 1 but eventually I want to start as a parent coach, but not for my son. I figure I will coach and play at home with him, maybe another coach can teach him something I miss.

Is there anyway I can contact you? Im a volunteer coach for a more relaxed league that does only one 30-45 minute practice a week. I coach 3rd and 4th graders and the league im in focuses on teaching the game over competition. I want to know how to effectively coach in such a limited time enviornment with such young players

My Sons Jr. High school basketball team asked me to coach the team and I'm thinking parents are going to say this to me as my son is the best guard on the team and puts the work in. I invite all the kids out on the weekend for an optional practice at the rec center and ironically the kids that will be starting and are the best on the team show up. What I told the players is that we are going to be a competitive team this year and we are not doing fair play and if you want to get more playing time than you need to put the work in. The school has good players on the starting line up but the bench isn't very deep and I'm thinking only going ten deep to avoid all this type of stuff.

yea its hard, I coach my nephew and I have done it for 3 years now... now at the prep school level only 1 person calls it out that I have a favourite, but sure off the court yes, I will buy him lunch but thats family thats not favouritism ... On the court hes the same as everyone else (except hes a legit and ranked top 5 player in canada so there is that too)... tbh if you yell too much at your son some players will say favouritism, if you dont yell enough they will say favouritism... imo just have a thick skin and ignore it

Not doubting you on this one Coach Allen,...but I just find the story at the 6minute mark hard to believe/digest. Only because in this day & age...where there are now several bball clubs/trainers out there (vs. say 15-20yrs ago)...if a family had enough income to buy a car to bribe a coach, they can afford extra lessons/sessions with an actual trainer for their 12th-man player no?

I coach 7-10 year old girls. We wanted to teach them man to man, but they had a really hard time with the concept of sagging off. They’d follow their counter part all over the court, even on offense. A 1-2-2 zone worked best for us. But I’d still like to teach them man for the older ones who will be in middle school next year. How do I teach them to not cover their man at half court?
@bballcoachallen Жыл бұрын
teach man first... learning man and then zone, zone will come easy... learn zone and man becomes hard

I just started my assistant coaching job i get a little confuse on what i should be doin I hust ne advise
@bballcoachallen2 жыл бұрын
as an assistant you'll be backing up the head coach ... every head coach has a different use for an assistant and the relationship will evolve over time. For me I have my assistant coaches yell to push the players (kinda like a good cop bad cop type of situation)

Hi mate, loved the video. Wondering if you have any tips for starting coaching a men’s local league team(uk) ? Not sure what you guys would call it in the US/Canada.

we call that beer league or mens league lol ... The simpler the offense the better, 5 out is easy to learn
