Not to burst your bubble Rhett, but Link is most likely a super taster. Spiciness is one of the few that can overwhelm a super tasters senses, and make everything taste the same. Link would need to clean the capsaicin off (with milk) before he could tell the difference.

You are correct. Being a supertaster myself it's why I actually prefer spicy food as it dulls the bitterness of some foods I normally find unpalatable. It would explain Link's extreme dislike of some foods.

I work in a taste receptor lab. A supertaster just refers to the presence of the PAV/PAV genotype of the T2R38 bitter taste receptor gene. It increases sensitivity to PTC, a bitter chemical found in many vegetables and some drinks. The way you guys tested for "supertasters" is innacurate. If you really wanted to know, you could get PTC taste testing strips. But keep in mind the PAV/AVI heterozygote can also taste PTC, just not to the extent the PAV homozygote can. AVI homozygotes cannot taste PTC at all.

I've done this at my bio lab at uni my freshman year. The teacher had given us all PTC paper strips for us to taste to see if we could taste it. I tasted it and I couldn't tolerate the taste of it. I immediately spit it out and rinsed my mouth out. I consider myself a supertaster. Even though spicy foods are very spicy to me, I don't hate it at all.

I think Link actually IS a supertaster.. I just think the hotness of number one became stronger and stronger and when he tasted the number two it seemed hotter because it was added to the hotness of number 1, where the others probably just didn't notice the difference between number 1 and 2, and just figured number 1 was hottest because there was no change for them ... don't know if it makes sense to others than me though...

The fact that he only got the spicy one wrong and no one else did is actually evidence that he IS a supertaster since only someone with normal taste buds would be able to tell the difference and NOT a supertaster.

It's because they didn't wait for the heat to reside from the first before tasting the other and making the guess which resulted in the heat just building in his mouth when he licked the second one therefore he really couldn't have guessed it correctly. I love you guys, but it's my duty as an Anatomy and Physiology teacher to tell you that spicy is not a flavor. It is a pain response. The flavors are sweet, sour, bitter and umami (savory). This was a super fun show and I'm convinced Link is a super taster! You could buy ptc paper and find out who all can taste bitter. It's a genetic trait. I cannot taste bitter. I almost forgot to comment about the video itself, once I saw the fragrance in the ad at the end! I'm super excited for that! :D The video was pretty funny and very entertaining! Taste Tests like this are interesting to watch and I was so happy when Link got so many right! But even though I wanted for him to win every round, I knew that Rhett wouldn't have been able to keep quiet for the rest of his life when it comes to food ;) So I guess it's fine that Link lost...just because I can't wait for the next "Why don't you like stuff!? Why do you only like peanut butter and cereal?" discussion. I'm also not familiar with the guys from ASAP science, but they seemed to be pretty nice :) I'm glad that they all were okay with wearing those weird costumes, because it made it even more funny.
