Given that Courtney and I are often doing product reviews, we felt it would be fun to see if we actually good at "tasting". In this video we take a "super taster" test to find out if we are in that 25% of humans that fall into that group -- and furthermore, are we standard super tasters, recessive super tasters or dominant super tasters.
Interesting article about the correlation between "super tasters" and COVID response: www.brgeneral.org/news-blog/2...

Years ago my mom went through two days of single elimination "top secret" super tester examinations as an interview. At the end her and 1 other lady, after starting with 400+ folks, were given jobs at a major national potato chip hq for quality control. 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, chewing, tasting and documenting chips from their various manufacturing plants all across the continent to ensure consistency. And sort of like your Penn Potato experience, you are done with chips when all you do is chew chips.

I did a 10-week stint (during someone's medical leave) working in a sensory evaluation lab for an international flavorings/seasonings company. There were trained testers among the employees that would perform various taste tests that we would set up. The goal was usually to copy a seasoning blend of a competitor or to make a blend at lower cost for a client with no discernable difference. There was a whole lab full of food scientists whose job it was to fool us all with chemicals/fake food! Yikes.

Dear Steve, Thanks for these test results - this really shows how different our taste buds are! This is probably why I find erythritol tasty with no ‘cooling effect’, while you and Courtney sneer at it and run for cover!!! BochaSweet has no sweet taste at all for me, yet you and others in the comments think it is the perfect non-sugar sweetener. Huh. I can’t taste the sweet in Monk Fruit either. Please don’t dismiss erythritol for those of us who like it! My favorite is liquid stevia for coffee, and use stevia and erythritol as my first choices when cooking and baking all your great recipes. I’m a devoted fan and watch all your videos - you have kept me a happy keto lover and a happy Serious Keto devotee. I brag about you to all my friends!!! Thank you, and keep up the good work. We love you.

I'm also a liquid stevia guy when it comes to coffee. 😉 You'll see when my "kitchen science" video on sweeteners is done some other reasons I'm not fond of erythritol. Anyhow, thanks for the comment and kind words.

@karensings 3 жыл бұрын
@@SeriousKeto Here is the article of interest upon which all others are based. www.brgeneral.org/news-blog/2020/december/simple-taste-test-can-predict-covid-19-outcomes-/ Essentially, “About a quarter of participants tested couldn't detect bitter flavors at all and were categorized as "non-tasters," while another quarter could taste exceedingly small quantities of bitter flavors and were labeled "super-tasters." The rest inhabited a middle ground and were called "tasters." Loss of taste or smell is one of the most common symptoms among those suffering from COVID-19. The study, currently under peer review for publication, showed that "non-tasters" were significantly more likely to be hospitalized once infected and faced an average of 23 days of symptoms. Meanwhile, none of the participants considered "super-tasters" faced hospitalization and their symptoms lasted an average of five days.”

Thanks. That's what I was expecting it to say. I'm confident that I had COVID very early on in the year (before we even knew what all the symptoms were). It's the only time in the 2 years I've been doing keto that I've been sick. I was down hard for a couple of days, but that's it. Last month, Courtney was diagnosed with COVID and she was completely asymptomatic. So our anecdotal experience aligns with the findings in this article.

My son grows lots of herbs, veggies, and even a stevia plant in his home. He had my husband and I taste test a few of the leaves. My hubby is great at describing the tastes. He’s also an artist and can visualize things with great detail. I, however, could recognize familiar flavors, but couldn’t describe them or identify many ,except for minty and sweet. It’d be fun to do the test kit in families, and with friends to see the differences and similarities.

This was interesting. I'm curious if people in the comments have a problem with the smell of collagen powder. This is popular and frequently found mixed with MCT oil powder, so I assume a lot of people on keto are trying it. I have a very sensitive nose, which shows up in my taste perception, but I don't know if that's related to being a supertaster or not. I've noticed that some brands of collagen are completely impalatable to me - if I put a scoop of some brands in my coffee, it strongly smells like a dog having chewed on a pig's ear or cow hoof. I assume that not every one gets that reaction, otherwise how would they stay in business? Do others experience this? Other brands I'm fine with. It seems that it might be due to the particular types of collagen - the more types, the more likely I get that reaction. I'd do more experiments to isolate the offending collagen type(s), but given the costs of $30 or more for a jar, I'll settle for anecdotes right now. Also note, I've found the carbohydrates are all over the map on collagen powder. Some are

Stevia...I have ragweed allergies and Stevia is related to ragweed...bitter, bitter aftertaste. While I am a super taster, if I have an allergy to something, it will taste spicy or bitter. In fact, spicy taste has been the start of my son's severe allergic reactions....so I pay close attention to them telling me it is spicy! They do like hot peppers and black pepper and can tell the difference in a food, they also get front heat versus late heat....allergies are more like stinging irritation and they can tell that now. Oh forgot, the new Truffle stuff is hard for me, I taste quite a bit of the dirt with the mushroom taste...the rest of the fam loves it. I also know a Dr. that is a super smeller...she can diagnose the type of infection by smell, she also can describe all the notes of a rose fragrance and what different scents start, middle and end.

Well, this is interesting. It turns out I probably am a supertaster, but also apparently just a whiner. "Skunky" is not a supertaster category; nor is "dirt," both of which I claim. Broccoli is considered "bitter" due to its pcu-like sulfur compounds, but I detect skunk, or, on a good ("today I can eat broccoli") day, struck match. "Dirt" is somewhere between metallic (also not a category) and...call it vegetal, grassy, woody.... Although grassy is quite specifically grassy. And beets are dirt + sweet. Accent on dirt. And I do taste the green (grassy) "clean" smell/taste in cilantro, which at least one article on the phenomenon claims cilantro haters don't; but the "whangy" taste is more overpowering. It's not so much soapy (although, that, too,) but more like the slimy water in a vase if you don't dump and freshen it for a week or two. And, yes, I have tried it more than once. (Cilantro, not vase water....) (And I haven't even mentioned mushrooms: metallic, dirt, wood, in that order, with the added disincentive of squidgy texture. Can you tell I have sensory processing issues?) You learn something every day. I'm still not eating cilantro, though.

Hi Steve, I have the genetic markers for a "super-taster". And I have always been sensitive to "taste". I usually can tell when meat is just barely past it's prime, etc. I was wondering how you get past the awful taste of alcohol sweetners, stevia etc. I have to admit I haven't tried them all, but with the ones I have tried "yuck". I tried the salted Carmel mct oil from perfect keto, the initial taste was good, but the after taste was enough to keep me from having anymore. Probably a good thing for me, since I still have a weight issue. Do you think it's the conditioning of your taste buds to prefer it, somewhat like when an individual switches to diet soda from regular? Thanks in advance for you answer. I do enjoy your sense of humor, and Courtney's. Keep up the great work.
@SeriousKeto
@SeriousKeto 3 жыл бұрын
I would say that just because a person is highly sensitive to taste doesn't mean that we like or dislike the same things. I think there is also an element of person conditioning. I point to how every culture seems to have some sort of fermented food that they love and the rest of the planet is repulsed by.

@@SeriousKeto Hey Steve, I am sorry if I am came off like a stuffy prig, (I try not to be, but probably am). I should have just asked if you had any problem at first, the rest I wrote was unnecessary. I was not questioning what you enjoy, I was just bummed that it didn't work for me. Won't bother you again. But I will enjoy your videos.

Apparently the strips they give you cover the gamut of taste, meaning if you are a super taster, you'll also have increased sensitivity to salt and sour. I know that Terry uses WAY more salt on her food than I do.

i don't know about that test, the fact the girl couldn't taste the PTC, and i guess the father? drinks wine and such, i'm a super taster, and i can't drink any alcohol at all. beyond the burning, its like drinking battery acid, i can't taste anything else but that. generally you can't be a wine tester if you are a super taster, i think you have to be a grade below so you can actually taste the wine and such.
