I always wear wrist guards while skating at my local roller rink. They totally saved my wrists a few weeks back. Some little kid dropped their plastic charm bracelet on the floor I tripped over it and went down hard.

I cringe when I see middle-aged people come to the group lesson for the first time with no protective equipment. I understand not wanting to buy stuff before you're sure you will continue the hobby, but they could borrow from a child/grandchild/neighbor. Most fall (don't we all?), and most don't come back. I wear wrist guards, knee pads, as well as padded shorts, since bruising my tailbone. I used to wear a helmet and elbow pads as well.

💯. We’ve all got too busy lives to stop for an injury, it’s just not worth it. ⛑️

I’ve started skating again. Only at the rink, and I hire skates. I got myself some derby wrist guards (I landed whilst running and it hurt!) and bumsavers, which are great. I did get protec knee and elbow but find them super bulky. Any suggestions for something, or should I persevere with the protec ones? TVM.

new sub love your vids i'm 57, have had surgery for a snapped ACL, i walk 5 miles a day, i cycle quite a lot, and dance regularly in the kitchen, i'm about a stone overweight but i'm working on that, i'm tempted to return to skating but i'm worried about 1) the weight of the skate ~ gravity of which would impact my knee 2) damaging the reconstructed knee in a fall would you advise me to stay away? or advance carefully, and watch as many training vids as possible before purchasing all the gear needed

i had a scary knee twist on my reconstructed ACL on my first night out with my skates; i was worried for a while, and thought i'd done something bad. as it turns out, it just takes AGES to heal at our age 😂

I know derby players whove returned after knee surgeries. Go at your own pace and dont return too soon, if you cant do something OFF skates yet you definitely cant do it ON skates. If you want advice ask a physio rather than a doctor bexause a doctor will always say "no" and a physio will say "we can work towards that" I had a concussion at derby and asked when I can skate again the doctor said "Id prefer if you never skated again, repeated concussions can cause brain injury like rugby players, and actually since youre on birth control you shouldnt be playing ANY contact sport because of reduced bone density" oh buzz off you wouldnt say that to a man in a similar situation physio said "two weeks of no symptoms just to be sure"

Gosh, I wouldn’t like to advise either way, defo speak to your doctor. I’d recommend if you do come back to get a skate with a heel as you won’t need to squat as low so less pressure on the knees. Get some BIG knee pads, 187 Pro. They’re like falling on a cloud. Only you can see how it feels, I’d recommend getting into skating stance. Knees bend, straight back and see how it feels. Is it something your knee can take…..

Does anyone have tips on how to control rolling and skate straight? I saw one commenter say stretching is a good idea to do before skating and that is an amazing idea. But I need ideas for controlling the wheels and stuff, thank you!
@swvsnick
@swvsnick 28 күн бұрын
I'm not sure how exactly you're struggling to skate straight but i'd make sure you're able to shift your weight from side to side and keep it evenly distributed when both feet are on the floor, maybe look into the bubbles/sticky skating videos? the controlling the wheels thing sounds like a gear issue, your trucks or wheels could be too lose for your current level, show your skates to someone if you know anyone, you could also politely ask a skate shop.

@@swvsnick thank you! I don’t know anybody that is good with skates. I think me struggling to go straight is because I can’t my concrete patio has a little slope and I can’t quite figure out how to skate over it yet because I’m so new to skating. And controlling the wheels I meant how to not roll when I bend down to pick up a stick or something or when I want to stop to talk to someone I can’t stop without standing on my stopper and I’m still learning to quickly use my stopper to stop

Stand in a V position and press on the inside of your foot. That will stop you from rolling away.
