I don’t blame the sister for not wanting to go back to treatment. My inpatient facility stays were all traumatic. My heart goes out to them. The kids. The husband. The anorexic twin, the caller. ED is brutal.

I'm kinda surprised that he doesn't recommend that people check their gut flora. Many mental issues are connected to imbalances in gut flora and deficiency of important bacteria, vitamins or minerals. Sometimes just cleaning up a diet helps. What I noticed in my case, I grew up on high carb diet, I love bread, pasta, pizza but something in it completely alters my behavior. I get soo angry, and mad and literally go into fight mode. Even depressive and suicidal. When I ditched the carbs, after awhile, I noticed that I'm was pretty happy person and with a very positive outlook. I haven't had anger issues at all. Then I went back to carbs again and it all came back. Luckily, now I know what's going on so I'm keeping my carbs to minimal. It's crazy how much our food can affect us, so I really wish he'd bring that stuff up to some callers attention, too.

To the twin: Easier said than done, but you have to really let go of her. Wanting something for someone else is exhausting on every level, try your best not to. Boundaries. Super tough, but it's truly your only option.

I have suffered from an eating disorder since I was a teenager. The hardest thing is to admit you need help. My kids are my reasons for recovery because I know kids learn habits from watching their parents/guardians so I am trying to learn healthy habits for them

I can connect to Charles in a few ways… changed so much of who I am for my wife, gave up dreams and careers, parts of who I am for her… then she left me for a married man. Now all I know is that I’m a failure…

I agree with John's remarks wholeheartedly at the end of rhe second call and as an adukt child this woukd have been soooo transformative for me and my relationship with my family. But it wouks be good if John woukd also explain exactly what that means in practice (maybe we'll get a specific call regarding this or maybe one day i will call) It's easy to give this advice to parents but often one of the reasons the parents try to control even tbeir adult kids is yes they are still trying to protect them n want them to have a good life but also they dont want to feel any compulsion to be at all financially or time wise involved in a mistake on the adult child's part. In this case,is the son hoping Mom is going to be a built in babysitter or get up in the middle of the night cause he doesn't know what to do. Is he living in bis own place now but the cost kf raising baby going to make him ask to move back to live with Mom? Parents, especially Mother's often then feel damned if they do and damned if they dont. But it can obviously lead to resentment on the parents part for thinking the adult child even put them in this position. So it can get messy. Clear boundaries and what help if any you are willing to give should also be discussed.

How a person can move on, with the self fulfillment they want/need, *without* burning down all the great stuff that already exists in one's life. That you can go forward, be ambitious, only if you put a period at the end of those sentences, you leave the failure/mistakes behind.

Charles is like he said about many people in his family including himself... they are often in their head. Some people may be born like this but i imagine it can also develop over time from something. I'm very much like this with the overanalyzing comlared to most people. We dont try to do this. It just seems to part of us. This makes me curious try to figure out where this came from for me anyway. The idea that it prevents you from having to do anything or what you really want is interesting and i think has some truth to it. Thanks John. Good luck to Charles n I respect him calling n allowing John to push him a bit. That's what we sometimes need with a safe person.

Hard for me not to judge the single mom that is about to have her 3rd baby that resulted from a one night stand. Sorry, but what is she doing having one night stands when she has kids at home? And on top of that not even taking precautions to prevent pregnancy. Not fair to her current or future kids. I wish people would think about that more!

Yes I agree wholeheartedly. I know the focus isn't on the woman the 2nd callers son had the one night stand with...(or was it a few hookups) so that may be partly why it was gloosed over n of course the Moms son seems to have been irresponsible here as well so she's trying not to be judgemental. That's nice n I was actually surprised to hear her sort of singing this woman's praises but seriously how wonderful a Mom can she really be if she already has 2 kids with one man and not just out dating but out sleeping around so quickly and then irresponsibly. Sorry I know people want to be cool and all and God forbid someone sound conservative but how is that type of behavior good for anyone, least of all the kids. The level of selfishness these days is astonishing and I'm only in my 50's so not waaay old school. There all just looking for validation at any cost. Especially the women bc sex with a complete stranger is rarely even good sex. I do love that the Mom recognizes she has had boundary issues in the past. It's not easy I imagine not to get over involved to the point of intrusive and I think even grown kids can understand this up to a point but being willing to not get defensive when your adult child tells you this is extremely important as having introspection. So many problems could be corrected or at least not made worse with that willingness. So I commend this Mom. Good luck to them all... especially the baby!

Maybe he can do short-term mission trips? My husband used to do 9 day mission trips to Haiti every year. Victor Marx ministries goes overseas to rescue kids from sex trafficking, maybe he can join that team from time to time.

Anorexia/bulimia are the “mental illnesses” that anger me the most cuz I feel like folks who have them can choose to want to live and get treatment but they prefer not to, kind of like a person who battles with drug addiction. It’s up to them to want to live and get better. No one else can force them, and I feel like is a cowardly or weak way to go, but that’s just a personal opinion cuz I’m not in their shoes to know how they feel. What bothers me the most is the trauma she’s putting her children through. I wholeheartedly believe that mentally ill people should not be allowed to reproduce cuz is a form of child abuse, and those children will suffer tremendously due to their parents mental illnesses. It’s absolutely unfair! It should be considered a crime.

@@CaliCoast805_lovin_life Is not about perfection, cuz no one is perfect. It’s about self accountability and responsibility combined with support. Battling with an ED is similar to any other form of addiction problem. The person has to want to get better, otherwise it doesn’t matter how much help, support and love they receive, they still will not try to recover and pretty much kill themselves slowly in front of their family traumatizing everyone in their family, specially their poor innocent children. It sounds like she has received amazing support from her family and medical professionals, yet she chooses to keep harming herself, and her children and family don’t deserve to witness such horrific way to go.
