I got the C1 certificate some time ago but lately I haven´t practiced doing these kind of tests so this one really caught me off guard on some parts, still got a solid 10/15, thank you for the challenge! :)

As a native English speaker, I must say on Q6 the verbs 'to speak' and 'to talk' tend to be used interchangeably. At least in the UK anyway.

Yes, however, by the Grammar rules, as I remember, talk is used more in informal settings+speak usees to talk about the ability to talk
@user-zb4ow8ql7v
@user-zb4ow8ql7v 10 ай бұрын
Yes, that was a surprise to me too. But then the narrator gives this explanation: "Talk is the correct verb in the EXPRESSION TALK NONSENSE AND TALK SENSE". So, does this explanation mean that whereas "talk" is the only correct verb to be used in this expression, "talk" and "speak" are, as you've said, interchangeable?
@mikekurtz5868
@mikekurtz5868 4 ай бұрын
I also agree that "speak" might be the better choice here. "Talk" usually implies casual conversation, while "speak" implies more substantive dialogue or debate. It's a fine line though, I'll admit. Question 9: THANK YOU, THANK YOU! That rule should be required reading for every English speaker. To "feel badly" (where the suffix "ly" has been added) renders "badly" an adverb, meaning that you are saying that there is something wrong with one's sense of feel or touch -- probably not what you intended.

15/15, though it was only because I'm a native English speaker LOL Seeing the comments, it's amazing how people learning the language are able to determine the correct answer of each question not through intuition, but by their procured knowledge of the language. It gives me hope as a learner of another language myself, that such level can be accomplished with enough time, effort, and practice. Great job everyone! Keep doing your best!

I have been an autodidact English learner since I was around the age of 12 and I keep noticing that my English knowledge does not come from, as you explain, my ‚procured knowledge‘ but rather from a native-like intuition such as yourself. I have never been too great in grammar but have always been splendid in using the English grammar correctly, it‘s kind of like an inside joke between my teachers and I!

Hey! That's cheating.😄 Actually, as another native English speaker, I'm doing the same thing. I'm not quite sure what draws me to these videos. Yes, I'm always amazed also at when I see non-native English speakers who are able to dominate the language so well. If only I could do the same in Spanish.

14/15 My mistake was 'immune against an illness'. When it comes to vocabulary at this level, it's mostly about knowing idioms and set phrases. If you don't know them, there's almost no way of guessing them. So all you can do is keep learning new vocab, read extensively and test yourself regularly. Good luck to all language enthusiasts!

13/15, my native language is hungarian and english is the 3rd place for me after german, in terms of level of knowledge. I streamed this video to a canadian guy (25) and a girl from Texas (22), respectively. They only speak english. The guy scored 11, the girl scored 14. I guess C1 grammar is not something you can entirely learn or master. This is pretty much the poetic level of english. If you don't know 2-3 phrases shown in the video, it's totally fine (you might fail the exam though). It was assembled in a way to contain extremely rare cases anyway, although most of them aren't uncommon.

You owe my like button. Very well-written and articulated, and informative as well. It is a saying in my country that language learners can become better at grammar than native speakers themselves. Though, it doesn't mean they're less educated than us. They're so used to not thinking about grammar it becomes harder to remember all those rules.

The trick of this test is that you can make a logical guess about correct answer since you have options to choose from. If I had to insert word without proposed options I would possibly not have guessed correct answer.

Hi, I'm a bilingual native Italian. I lived in the States for 43 years before moving back to Italy, upon retirement, because I wanted to learn more about the city I was born in. I've lived in Italy for almost four years and am planning to go back to the states in a few years, as I have sons and grandchildren still living there. During my first year in Italy, I took the Cambridge C2 Proficiency exam and passed it. Tonight, I took this test just to see if my English has deteriorated since moving to Italy, and apparently I'm still on top of my game. Perhaps it helps that I completed my university studies in the United States and that my wife is a native of the United States and we speak English regularly, at home. Thank you for the opportunity you've afforded me with this English test. My score was 15/15

Before I begin my actual comment, I would like to apologize in advance for my inadequate level of English proficiency. I am not a native speaker of the world's current lingua franca which unfortunately leads to me making numerous embarrassing mistakes being made whenever I attempt to communicate using this language. Whenever I am reminded of how I lack the ability to convey my thoughts in an eloquent manner I feel as though I have committed a cardinal sin, as though every English teacher in the world is simultaneously shaking their heads and sighing due to how utterly disappointed they are at me. Although I know that saying sorry to those of you who are reading my comment will not change the fact that I fail miserably to write and speak perfect English, I am writing this as a way to deter a certain type of people who cannot stand poor English (Also known informally as "Grammar Nazis") from mocking me by posting unwanted and unnecessary comments detailing my every blunder. In my humble opinion, making grammatical errors should be perfectly acceptable as native speakers should not expect non-native speakers to be able to communicate in their second or third languages eloquently. If you are able to completely understand what the other person wrote, is there really a problem with what they've written? No, because the entire concept of communication is the exchange of information between other intelligent beings, which means that no matter how the exchange of information is made, as long as the information is accurately shared there is not a fundamental issue with their ability to communicate. To see it in another way, remember that someone who isn't fluent in English is fluent in another language. When you think about it this way, isn't it impressive for someone to speak a second language in any capacity? Having empathy and respect are qualities that are sorely missing for far too many people these days, especially on the internet. That being said, I am aware that not all netizens who correct others are doing it to ridicule and shame. There are some who do so with the intent to help others improve and grow. However, displaying the failures of other people publicly will cause the person who is criticized to feel negative emotions such as shame and sadness due to the fact that their mistake has been made obvious which severely undermines the point they were trying to make in spite of their unfamiliarity with the English language. In most circumstances, people are not looking for language help when they post anything online. Most people just want to enjoy themselves and have a good time on the internet which is why I would not encourage correcting other people regardless of your intentions. If you really do want to help others with their spelling or grammar, I would highly recommend you to help via messaging privately because not only will you not embarrass anyone, but you can also go more in-depth with your explanation which I'm sure the other person will greatly appreciate if they want help, but I digress. I know that I've written a bit of an essay, but I hope I've made my points clear. Anyways, here is the comment I wanted to make: Good job!

14/15 - the immune from question confused me. tho tbh i feel like it’s a b2 rather than a c1 test… although i might be biased because of the many many years of being immersed in the english speaking world on the internet, my 15 years of interacting with english really allow me to use intuition and not knowledge to answer most of these questions… so maybe it’s easier for me to say compared to people who reach a high level 5 times faster or something

12/15. Mistakes: Tell nonsense, Immune to prosecution, search far and deep. I studied English long time ago and use it only in the internet (where nobody corrects my possible mistakes) and for my job (with other non-native speakers). I almost do not know idioms, but I made logical guesses to choose the correct phrases (should I not have phrases to choose I would not guess the correct answer). I also forgot many grammar terms such as past participle (I remember what it is but forgot how it is named - I remember only Participle II naming). The same is with "had arrived, would have seen" - I just felt it is correct without remembering the rules.
