Thank you sooo much for mentioning within minutes that the distortion get be not "enough" weight...The entire weekend I could not correct an issue that was not an issue until I moved my system to retrieve something that was dropped. I went to forums I emailed various distributors of Pro Ject, weed you tube .... nothing until You mentioned in your video that there can be the possibility of not enough weight. Even though I was at 1.8g still set. I kept resetting the tone arm over and over... I knew it could not be the stylus, its practically brand new. I increased the weight and there was my sound quality that I had previously had. Dude... Thank You!

Great stuff James. I’m a professional musician who’s PLX-1000 has been giving major issues. And it was in 1982 that I last regularly used a record player (an old Dansette!). So once I took your tip on the height adjustment and weighting, the quality improved. Big time. Well done.

Hi James great video. Ive actually learnt how to use an anti static brush for the first time properly from you. Its no good swiping it over a spinning record you neex to apply sone downward pressure on a still record revolving the brush around the record itself thank you.

hi Michal, thats a good point I forgot to mention that, thanks, I agree they should be more strict on the set up in night clubs once I was on a gig with a friend of mine and when we arrived the decks were set up on a pasting table and when I complained they all looked at me like I had just insulted them or something, this friend I used to DJ with used to take a 20 cm spirit level to gigs to check the decks were level. dang....I was wondering why mine was making these loud popping noises i didn't look thoroughly but when i did,man it was filthy and like a million finger prints on ALL the records.So each one would either be all gone and then some will be insane,thanks man :)

The current Technics manual lists the VTA adjustment setting for specific cartridge heights when mounted to the Technics headshell.

@costellom5 Hi there, If you just want it for home listening than any of the both will do the trick. but the 1200's have a tone arm height adjustment, which is very handy for proper adjustment. but if you find an Sl-3310 in good condition for a low price grab it with both hands. but if not an SL1210 will be more practice. @barrydbutcha Easy mate, it could be the contacts on the end of the tone arm, try taking the cartridge off and cleaning them with a cotton bud, I actually did a video on this. Failing that, you could have broken audio cables, if you need some info on them, I did a video on how to replace the audio cables, but try the contacts first it might be them, if so that is simpler to fix. Hey man, I've just watched a few of your vids on turnatble setup - really great clear explanations, hugely appreciated!! I want to ask you about something that bugs me when I'm playing vinyl. A fair few of my records (but not all) sound too sibilant, i.e. whenever the singer makes a s, z, sh or ch sound it's accentuated so these sounds really leap out at you in a not-very-nice sounding way. Is this just crap pressings, or might I STILL have some set up problem? Any thoughts welcome, cheers?

viperfrank, what cartridge do you recommend for a TechnicsSL-1200MKII? I just bought a used one and i want a cartridge just for listening to music. I am not a DJ But someone recommended the Technics to me as being an exellent turntable. Really enjoy your tutorial videos. Best wishes

Hey Frank, nice video. But lots of record players don't have that thing to level the tonearm with. Mine doesn't, and the manual also says to level it horizontal, but that's impossible! It will always point down a little bit.

I watch d this video and it was very knowledgeable.... However I'm experiencing a much different sound issue coming from one of my stylist.... It's more of a scratchy sound coming through and I'm looking for a little help with figuring this out.... viperFrank: I have a record player, that does not have counter weight adjustment, and no antiskate and you cannot adjust the hight of the tone harm. And only one of my Records when it its a high pitch note, it now sounds to sharp, and that started to happen after playing it 5 time, all the other Records does not have that issue even if I played them way more then 10 times. The one that started to have high pitch note too sharp, as no surface sound, except at the very end of the side where it start to glide in the center where there his no groves. The other that does not have that issue, does have alot of surface sound, but the surface sound stop when it his instruments, and the other one that does not have the high note too sharp as just a few places with minor crackle and pop. The biggest issue his the one with the high note gets too sharp. Do you have an idea to what might cause this problem?

yeah i know what you mean, i had a pair of ortofon club cartrages before that came with a pair of deck i bought a while ago and they where terrible,they were nicknamed vinyl eaters, and i could see why they wore one of my records out in a few days after only about 10 plays. funny thing is they discontinued them about 4 month later, i wonder why? thanks for your comment by the way. nice one!!

hi there, using the type of cleaner that i used on this video should help with the popping. but if you are getting really bad popping that you need to clean the record more thoroughly, iv done a video on that and i will hopefully be uploading it in the next couple of days. you can buy some anti-pop filters that plug in line with your turntables, but i wouldn't bother you could get just the same effect buy just knocking 12KHz (treble) on your mixer down very slightly . nice one!!!

hi fella great set of vids. iv got a problem with my technics , both are set up properly and both play vynal , but only thro one speaker. both speakers are in good condition, when i switch the wire from the working speaker to the non working speaker ive got sound also. think i may have a turntable wire broken down from one of the decks as there loads a buzzin from that deck and the speaker that runs on that channel,, help any ideas fella ? cheers butcha

wicked vid mate thanks. ive got real bad sound quality still. gonethrough all ur vids... cant move weight up the arm more than 2 on dial. flipped weight, put penny on cartridge and sounds better a little but don't wanna kill my vinyl!!! think ive set it all up right, got 1 concorde and still same issue. seems like head is too light and cant adjust more weight as the counterweight (after setting to zero) does not slide up arm after about 2 on dial... decks on flat surface.... please help boss.

i have the shure m44-7 and even when the height is set to bottom, lower than zero that is... it is still too high. am i missing something? i have a technics headshell, don't know if it's the original but i guess it is (bought the turntable second hand). i notice other people have experienced this too. it is not much but definately visible to the eye. it is as much that it bothers me! are the ortofon concorde lower/higher than shure m44?

Hi, hope you can help me. I have a BSR 35CS Mcdonald record changer, everything works great except when I want to turn it off, and slide the slider to Auto so that it should turn off, the tonearm goes to the resting place and right away goes back to play the record. It does not go down upon the resting stand so that it should turn off. It use to work great but may be I touched some setting, please let me know how to do this. Thanks in advance.

Cool vid. I got a A.T. AR120 usb a few months ago. I am running into a small mixer and into a Denon receiver. There is no ground wire. When I turn up the bass a little there is feedback. Is there a certain spot you can solder a ground on the T.T.? I cant find any info for my model. It would be a very cool table if I can solve this. Thanks.

Grounding won't eliminate feedback from bass vibration, you need to move the sub away from the turntable.

If you had a bad ground you'd have a hum (60hz usually) and it be constant.

If you don't have an empty vinyl disk, you can use the blank space between grooves at the end of a record ;)

Did you plug it into a phono input? What you described sounds like a turntable plugged into a normal line input. This is a very common beginner mistake, turntables require a special input that applies a frequency adjustment to get the normal sound. If your stereo does not have a phono input you will need a phono pre amp to put in between the turntable and your sound system.

I have a 1210 mk11 which was supplied with an Ortofon DJ (Awfultone) cartridge. What a horrible thing. Great for DJ work I suppose, but you could almost see the swarf curling up from the vinyl.

Back up the counterweight a bit. It could be the stylus. Conical could have a bit more bass than elliptical. Experiment with several different cartridges and different stylus types.

Think of the right location of your speakers. Their vibrations could be a reason for your problem.. Normally speakers should be detached from the hifi rack

I've watched the video on LP120 vs Technic 1200 but it only says about better build quality of Technic 1200. But I use Ortofon 2M Red with my LP120 and happy with the detail, HiFi and overall quality of sound from my LP120. Any suggestions by which I can get significantly better quality sound by changing cart like Ortofon 2M Blue?

I have a Sony turntable and when I touch the outside of the base, it makes a thumping sound which should not happen. There is no grounding wire so I am not sure this is a grounding problem. In other words, when I touch the base of the turntable, it should not be evident from he speakers.
