I would think that this technology would be simpler then Crossing hundreds of light-years or building Dyson spheres. A mistake this series makes in my opinion is they just think it requires a more powerful computer. When we were playing with RadioShack computers back in the 90's we all just assumed that 30 years from now we would have really powerful desktop computers. The vast majority of us had absolutely no conception of a smartphone. It wasn't that we thought it was too complicated to be built, it was that the thought never occurred to us. Whatever builds these simulations will resemble a computer about as much as a smartphone resembles a slide rule. I think it is impossible to know for certain either way. Any evidence you are not in a simulation could have been simulated (though I am not sure what such evidence could even look like anyway). And any evidence you are in one, perhaps the sky disappearing or people glitching and re spawning, could be an illusion created by human or alien technology. Actually, to answer Neil's question with the dart, you are probably most likely to hit the largest universe. Each successive universe is probably at least 10x smaller in scope than the one it simulates. Unless... somehow a computer in one universe is able to somehow magically (technologically) simulate a larger universe than it exists in.

If we did live in a simulation, would we even be able to leave? For the sake of argument we're in a simulation. I'm made of code, you're made of code, we're all ones and zeros. That means outside of our world we have no physical bodies. We wouldn't be able to leave in the same way Siri couldn't just waltz out of my phone. The only way we could "leave" is to send ourselves in data forms to another computer in the real world, perhaps a robotic body with a camera, smell detector, microphone, and speakers to create a makeshift human. But we'd never be able to exist in the same way the humans in the real world would.

Yes. All of the above. All of those variations you list will be possible and therefore all will be created. Which one we are currently in is a bit trickier to determine though. Since none of us are aware that we are in a basement playing a game, it makes it most likely that we are 100% AI - or inside matrix like VATS in which we are a real mind but plugged into a virtual world. The fact that there are so many people in this world that we never meet or interact with that have extremely simplistic, narrow views of things make me think that they are the minions, or lesser NPC’s - or maybe they were just unfortunate with their 20-sided dice rolls during birth/character generation and ended up with extremely low numbers for their intelligence and wisdom attributes.

1. Simulated reality is still reality. 2. Probability plays no part in it. Scattering the simulations and picking one at random isn't how it would work. They are all nested into one another, like files on your operating system. One file holds the rest. Continue to dive deeper and you'd still find that only one file within holds the rest of the simulations. So the question isn't a matter of probability. It's a matter of comprehension. Of perception. Which file is it that we are able to perceive? If we can't comprehend our root or parent file, that leaves us with our child file. The way I see it, there is only one thing that we can be certain of: We have not created any simulations of our own. Therefore our reality is that of one where there are no simulations after us; none that we have created. Meaning we can be living within the original universe and no simulations exist. Or, we are living in the most recent simulation regardless of if it is the first one created by the real word, or the infinitely most recent created by the previous simulation.

A simulation may be rendered in an instant so that the maker can scroll their view through time. So using us not making a simulation as evidence that we are most recent does not follow. It is a matter of probability, in part. Your whole hierarchy is interesting, but probability still plays a role.

Who says the creators of a world like this have to be human? Us humans make games with alien like creatures, what if this is a simulation with completely different laws of physics and completely different characters than in the "real world" If so, what would the 'real world' be like?
