I've been here for over twenty years and never feared for my safety or had any safety concerns. The only real danger are typhoons! It's like anywhere, it depends on where you go and who you associate with.

Agreed. I was in a typhoon here in July 2023 and the water in my yard was chest deep. There was nowhere to go except my neighbors 3rd floor

I was fortunate enough to visit the Philippines on a sponsored trip about 10 years ago travelling to various cities. I'm not sure how much things have changed but I was surprised to see armed guards at mall entrances/exits in Manilla. We also went on a short excursion on a small boat with 7-8 people just off Cebu. We had to have an armed guard with a machine gun...in case of pirates. No joke.

People are scared of crime which is very low but then they rent a scooter and drive it around wearing shorts and flip flops. Vehicle accidents are by far your biggest danger.

No it’s far from dangerous unless you want to pick fights in the streets. Me and my asawa have been here 7 years and no problems. Yes there are scammers, petty thefts and the occasional burglar taking little things every few years. However we go for drives in our convertible and had surgery here and we’re still alive.

I'm ex Navy, lived in the Philippines and returning to CDO next month for good. I've been to Zamboanga and Cotabato. You are not safe if you act like an idiot. If you mock and antagonize locals it will come back to bite you. Acting like a fool when you are a guest in THEIR country can get you killed in the Philippines, Chicago, Detroit or anywhere else. I have NEVER been disrespected or scammed because I respect the people. The Philippines is WAY safer than the US. I'm from Vegas and pray I don't get jacked before I leave. This guy who got killed did it to himself bottom line. Giving respect gets respect in return.

Yup I feel the same way. In Colorado, where I live in the mountains, you are more likely to get mauled by a bear, moose or lion, than get jacked but I hear you.

I am happy to hear that, same here. I play basketball with the local kids and chat with the elders all the time. I think if you are nice and not a braggart or show off you will be just fine.

Crime is high here in the phil yes just watch the news.we don't amount to a pimple on a mole hill when it comes to the population here so doesn't affect us much they don't target you

@ I live in Vancouver now. I was a local in the 80s and 90s but go back home frequently. I’d say it’s about the vibes you’re letting out could impact the perception of how the locals sees you. Living in different places I’d say culturally the Filipinos are accepting and have a community where it’s about sharing and they have hierarchy for respect eg elders, big brothers, etc. and money is a big motivational driver. So if your vibe or presence doesn’t seem right then chances of you becoming a victim is multiplied exponentially. Dude was loan sharking etc I wonder how he seems like when he goes to people asking them when they’ll pay back. Should have built his security first before going into certain businesses. Like come on. lol he ain’t in his hood back in Oregon. you’re also airing your your thoughts on KZbin for anyone to see. So if he’s disrespected someone they probably follow him online and end up getting annoyed lol so now there just cooking up some no good ideas. And bam. This is the result

@partyeslife8157 Great insight, thanks for commenting. I am also looking to start a business here but more along the lines of an airbnb in Bohol. I am curious about what you think of that. I go out of my way not to show up the locals. I would never open a store or another business that is mostly reserved for locals. But I feel like the tourist industry is fair game.
