I was so dead set on trying to find that one figure at the top of the list, and passed on opportunities to get other figures that were on my list. By the time they reached the top, they had become insanely hard to find and extremely expensive.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. I actually had the reverse happen. I left all my G1 Transformers, G.I.Joe, and MOTU figures at home when I went off to college. My mom passed away last year, and to my surprise, she'd labeled, boxed up and saved all of my stuff. It's a sweet reminder of her every time I look at them and they are pretty much priceless to me at this point 😇👍

I wont go crazy for not being able to get a particular figure, although in some cases I do wish I could have, but I move on. I prefer to collect figures of characters, games and movies that mean a lot to me so I skip things that do not.

I remember when I first had the financial freedom to start my collection, I almost instantly did the whole “buy every single thing that comes out” (particularly ML), and I’d always end up selling most of it a few months later because I just bought it for the dopamine hit. Lol This year I’ve purged and settled into a nice groove of only doing one single toy line with a pinch of another here or there. It’s kept me from a lot of stress of “how do I pay for all this stuff?!”, and I’m happier that my collect is just a 99% solo focus at this point.

Awesome video! I collected years ago and broke every single one of these rules and ended up hating/resenting collection 1.0. I got rid of it all. About 2 years ago I decided to pick up a couple of Iron Man Legends and have been collecting ever since. I limit myself to certain franchises/teams in the MCU/MU and out of the 145 figures I have so far I am happy to say that my shelf of shame consists of only 8 figures that don't bring me joy. Definitely going to continue on this happy road but will be using your questions on future purchases and wish I could go back in time with what I've learned and what you have shared. But time travel is not yet possible so for now Collection 2.0 is shaping up nicely. Great content.

About 6 years ago, I started focusing on micro collections (the Dark Crystal line, Rock Lords, Robo Force, etc) which were less to collect, and also just favorite characters out of lines (so focusing on like only Stinkor/Stormtroopers/Marshal Bravestarr) which made a MASSIVE difference, and considering I do comic conventions for work, this took the stress out for me.

I'm much more selective these days. I've definitely made some mistakes, but can't bring myself to part with any of it. It's all on display, and is pure nostalgia for me. So, best approach is to never expect to "make money" from my collection, and buy only what I really want. The biggest question I'm dealing with is where does it all go after I leave this earth one day. Anyone in my family would see it as a burden. Has anyone else thought about what to do with it all when your gone?

The 90s were a boom time for “limited editions” ( of 100000 copies !) and I loved Spawn comics and toys and Star Wars it was the 20th anniversary time 1997- many Kenner exclusives I never regret a day or moment but would be lying if I said I’m no disappointed by the low value of Spawn toys .

I was going to be the big bad CARDED collector!! Started collecting POTF2 carded figs in '95 and went nuts, completionist mode, until 2012..then, it all came crashing down...cards started to warp/wrinkle/bubbles yellowing/bubbles falling off/took up two rooms wall to wall...yeah, that ended and everything was opened and went on shelves. This year, I’ve been selling off the shit I don’t really want. I passed that completionism when I was about 20. I had way to many funko pops, way too many marvel legends. I started to liquidate and keep only what I absolutely loved. This means that my DC display is not as nice as my Marvel display, BUT I refuse to pay for shitty action figures just because there’s no good version of that character. I have a man cave now and my goal is now AESTHETIC. If I’m going to purchase collectibles, it needs to objectively look GOOD. It should contribute to the overall vibe of the room. I leave that up to my wife. If the collectible looks tacky, I don’t keep it. I think the biggest takeaway though is that people need to learn how to budget and maintain their finances. People like us who love to waste money on collectibles don’t always have a good foundational financial structure in their lives. People can’t help but indulge. It’s the only thing that makes sense to them. And then people who don’t understand finances blame everything on scalpers. Never choosing to take personal responsibility. Great video. This community is in dire need of good advice and logic.

I've collected Action Figures on & off since my first Star Wars figure in 1978 & have developed firm RULES. [1] I have to LIKE the character, figure or franchise, regardless of rarity or expected value. [2] The figure HAS to have GOOD articulation (No 5POA) & good sculpt. [3] I ONLY collect 1/18th or 1/12th scales. [4] PRICE has to be 'reasonable'. [4] Avoid being a completionist eg: skip a figure if it does NOT excite you, no matter if it completes the "wave" (eg: Vice Admiral Holdo anyone ?). [5] NEVER (or rarely) buy for future profit - money is better invested in property & shares. [6] If I lose the joy in a toy or franchise I sell them off for at least break even - the money recouped can better spent elsewhere.

I totally understand what your saying. When I was collecting black series I originally planned to get so many more characters including characters from the sequels and clones. Then I realized I don't care about anyone from the sequels and canceled. I also decided to cancel buying clones cos I just don't care. Mace Windu was another example as I planned to buy him, then I realized I don't care for his character so I cancelled. I have limited my BS to 4 figures I feel are a must buy for me. Jedi Knight Luke (the Walmart exclusive), Obi Wan (ROTS), Chewbacca, and C-3po. At one point I was planning to buy NECA's BTTF line, but they were also selling Predators I really wanted. So I decided to cancel BTTF because AVP is my bread and butter.

I hate that hobby shops run in and buy whole cases just to mark them up… I only grab MOTU, some of the marvel legends… some hot wheels…. That’s it. I did all you mentioned in this video…yes, you’re right. When the thrill is gone, it’s time to rethink. At least your wife gets it. My better half told me “this is sick…. It’s a sickness…” I just told her…”to you maybe… it makes me happy..” love this channel…it removes the self hate and guilt surrounding this hobby. Oh boy…let me see, here are a few of my top regrets: buying anything for potential future value, instead of just wanting it for myself, keeping stuff in package when I really wanted to open it because it might go down in value…even though I had no intention of selling it, buying stuff with a credit card when I had no money, buying stuff with zero regard to size and if I had room for it, keeping packaging after I opened the toy, feeling I needed a full set when I only wanted one or two, letting it take over my living space, letting it take over my mind…etc, etc.

One of the joys for me of being a Collector is guessing yes I got Angry when I did not do research on the Actress for Cara Dune and her views and past that figure up before her views back fired Passed up the figure many times in store luckily I found one I could afford but that felling of regret actually entertains me not many would agree but for me I love the fact that my guess could me wrong.

My most prized possession is a carded George Lucas storm Trooper figure I found it in my home one day when cleaning and its hole has not even been punch and it was already in a plastic protection case it is out there I know but it really happen I think it was a Christmas gift I forgot about.

They seem to be a hit or miss. In the past I’ve found some figures, but they aren’t always my go to unless I have time to visit a handful of stores at a time. Target and Walmart still are my regular stops.

@@Nerdzoic yeah I had no idea really what was being released. Also when I did walk by the isles it was confusing. The constant changing of packaging and mixing lines with prequels and horrible overlap it was a huge turn off. They started making great product though I must say. The Original Trilogy collection I was on board with the Star cases they launched but then not following up with just those Vintage style and switching to the Saga line I was like fuck this I’m out. I was also burnt out at the time with it, keep in mind the POTF2 steroid figure line wore me out. I found that line wanting. Plus we didn’t want that as OG collectors at the time. It was a huge criticism in the toy isles at the time. We wanted the entire OG line made with modern realistic figures on the old card backs. The sales on that would have been through the roof. Hasbro/Kenner was just too stupid to realize the obviousness of this at the time. They slowly got it. But even still putting non OG stuff on 78 to 85 style card back packing just shows how out of touch they are and desperate too sell the new trilogy’s that came after.

I hate to say it..but I've been collecting for 40yrs and I don't have near the number of your issues. A lot of good info for those that do. However, when I started; I set collecting goals, I set a budget, I learned to limit how many lines I collected and to what extent and luckily figured out the "Georg Sacul" situation pretty quick. Also - I STARTED BEING A VENDOR AT SHOWS - that was key and solved a lot of problems. I made more contacts, did a lot more trading and was spending less out of pocket. Married over 20yrs, 3 kids and a mortgage...management and limits is key.
