I think being my usual harsh self wouldnt be appropriate so Im being careful with my words here, but, this wont actually help anyone. Im pretty dissappinted. The MYSTICAL SIGNS that the universe has chosen you to be a singer are, strangers who probably know nothing about singing gave a compliment? Thats not just false but disingenuous.

I've loved singing since I was a teen. I used to sing for HOURS when I was home alone. But I heard my parents make fun of it, and it gave me so much anxiety, I couldn't sing if there was anyone around me. No sound would come out, if I tried. Even my speaking voice was strained, and if I heard it on a video, I'd cry and sweat. When I turned 30, it hit me that one day I'll die, and I'll be very sad that I never tried singing. So I started going to a teacher, and it took months to overcome the anxiety and sound somewhat like what I sound when I sing alone. She was extremely supportive and 10 months later I could show her my first recording. It's probably (definitely) far from perfect, but it really helped when she pointed out all the things I did do right. So it's definitely a game changer when a kind professional gives you validation.

I'm a total beginner. I don't sing nearly as bad as Ed Sheeran did when was a beginner. If he could be a great singer, then so could I. That clip gave me some hope. I nearly quit singing. Some people say I'm an average singer while others say I'm below average. The latter also claim that the former is being generous. The criticism has really demotivated me.

I love to sing, I don’t dream of doing it professionally but I love to do it. I can’t even read sheet music and I can only mimic what other people sound like, which hurts my voice sometimes. I don’t even like how I sound, but one day while I was at work, I was singing and a customer took the time to tell me how beautiful my voice sounded. It was definitely a pick me up.

@WideCuriosity

Many of the instructors on KZbin seem to be down on trying to mimic others, and insist on you finding and concentrating on your own voice. If going professional I can understand that perfectly; and having a trained 'own voice' is probably good for everyone: but for those of us that want to achieve for ourselves, in the thought of impressing a few friends/family one day, the ability to achieve a good mimic of a well known performance can be our major aim. If popular singer xxx hits that note, or manages that run well, then I'm human too, no reason I shouldn't be able to do that, and in addition approach their resonance too. However if you are hurting your voice I'd be concerned that you may be straining too much. IMO it's worth building up gradually to the more stretching parts, and checking KZbin videos to see if there are techniques you can bring into play in order to achieve those parts easier. Just my unqualified opinion.

I have been looking at various channels. I know when my voice hurts that it’s not good even if I’m not trying to do it professionally. I’m having a lot of trouble because most people assume you have a baseline of knowledge that I unfortunately don’t. I don’t hear the difference between a C and a F note (not really, just an example). If someone told me sing/hum this in C I can’t make sense of that. Does that make sense to anyone? I don’t feel like I’m explaining myself correctly.

I really enjoy singing as a hobby, but I'm very shy, so I try extra hard to only sing when I'm alone and not let anyone else hear me. I started this hobby when I was in junior high school. When I finally entered high school, I had to choose an art class to take, and I picked mixed voices (basically a choir). That was my first experience actually getting vocal training from a professional teacher. My parents didn't really know I have this hobby and my mom was skeptical when I told them what class I took. I still remember the words she blurted out that day, "Can you even sing?". I don't remember what reply I gave her, but those words still occupy my mind even now. But I totally understand her point of view, all of a sudden, her child decided to pick up singing out of nowhere. Well, I got top marks for that class, so that certainly boosted my confidence a little. Here's another story. I was in high school when covid started and because of the lockdown, my school implemented online classes. One normal day, I accidentally unmuted myself before class started (the teacher hasn't joined yet) and started singing. Look, I was alone in my room, bored waiting for the teacher, so yeah I just started singing. The whole class heard me and someone reminded me through the class group chat. It was super embarassing, but I quickly composed myself and just sent a brief "Oh, sorry for that". But what happened after gave me quite a boost of confidence. Two well-known singers in my class started complementing me saying I sounded great. One of them complimented me by saying that I was better than the other guy and then they proceeded to roast each other lol. I still continue to sing at this current point of my life, and I learned to build my own confidence. I still like to sing alone and I like my own voice, so I'm mainly singing for myself because I enjoy it :)

Same here, I am a closetted “above average singer” at my day job of,several, years, I read and write music a bit, play 3 musical instruments, and music teachers have said I have a great ear for music. Although I do openly hint to co-workers that I enjoy music/ singing/karaoke…but people don’t seem to take my statement seriously and they can’t guess that I am a decent singer. It,could,be that my speaking voice sounds pretty different from my singing voice..I don’t know really. So I do not get invited out for karaoke, although I get invited for other non singing activities …..etc…oh well…but I stay humble and low key about it, and maybe some day, I will get a chance to accidentally show them my hidden talent. (At my past workplaces too, people only found out I had some singing talent only towards my last days at work in that company….like hanging out for karaoke for my farewell..etc. they d often tell me I “surprise” them. maybe it will be that way at my current workplace when the time comes for me to move in to a new job….lol. It is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️)

You have no idea how much this resonates with many of us. I can’t even begin to explain how much fate has changed my perception of music and my understanding. It’s been my path since I was 12. I’ve been signed by Universal, on multiple TV shows. discouraged, belittled, others didn’t believe in me, mentally drained, physically and emotionally beaten...shit, throughout it all, music is my path. I honestly do believe though, that if something is in your soul, you know it. You’ll stop at NOTHING to achieve what makes you happy. Music is the most beautiful drug that has ever existed. 🙏🏽💖

You’re right. Just that small positive feedback or compliment really skyrockets my confidence. The voice is such a personal and vulnerable display of ourselves. It’s an extension of us and when we feel judged it can shrivel us up. For me that happens at least. I just started singing lessons 2 months ago. I’ve been a musician since the age of 9 and only focused on that. I never liked my voice and wasn’t a naturally gifted singer either. Now at 30, I decided to just do it. The process is there & it’s showing. It makes me want to cry because I always thought you were born with it and I never sounded good. I also wish I began 20 years ago. Anywho, thank you for being vulnerable for us & going out there to get your voice improved. That’s an excellent thing I wish I could do-perform at the subway stations to get over the fear of singing & improve. I enjoy your enthusiastic spirit & encouraging energy.

I'm currently 18 years old, but I had started singing when I was 13 during the start of my highschool years. I at first only stuck to instruments such as the guitar, the flute and piano, but from time to time I'd practice singing with some of my friends who had singing tests, exams or performances, and a lot of them encouraged me to sing more often, and also to join the singing lessons; at first I was hesitant but I gave it a shot, and before I knew it I was singing in my music teachers all females world, award winning chamber choir for 2 years called "Cgals Chamber Choir". At first my teacher identified me as a first Alto/Second Soprano, but sometimes she'd seat me with the first sopranos because she said I had a wide, versatile vocal range, although the lower notes are my best vocal features, and during choir or even solo performances, and even just singing amongst close friends and family, people time and time again tell me not to shy off because of what great off a voice I have. I'm still somewhat insecur, nervous and lack the confidence in my voice, but hearing these words have made me not give up, even if I don't attend music lessons or sing in choir anymore, I'm still able to take to heart all those words of encouragement and all that I've learned through my journey with music. Also any tips anyone? I'm trying to avoid tension, straining my voice, work on my chest and mixed voice, and also some vibrato and falsetto notes, and the whistle register.

I know it sounds very childish, but my dream has always been to be a K-pop idol. I simply love singing and have gotten selected for choirs, solos, etc. My hobby is dancing and fashion is just a part of my life. I have always felt shy and insecure about myself. When I heard most of the people in my choir unable to sing without the piano, I thought to myself, "Can't everyone get the right key without the piano?" but surprisingly for me, it's really tough for people to do so. I have just started realizing that I'm not just a singer--I'm a GOOD singer.

I love the energy that’s going around recently. Everyone is so positive and I think that’s beautiful. When I was younger, I loved music and I love singing in anything involved in it. I was constantly told that I should never even bother looking into it because I would never be a singer. I honestly didn’t really want to be a singer. I just wanted to enjoy music. When I watched your video the first couple minutes, I thought for sure it was going to have some line of the statistics and how it’s not worth looking into. I was completely wrong everything was very positive and you have no idea how much I appreciate that. I have a daughter myself now and she absolutely loves music. She’s only a year and a half but it’s beautiful seeing her reaction when music comes on. (She goes to a little piano and start singing like Elton John. It’s freaking adorable.) Music is a skill just like anything else the more you practice it the better you will be. I had no idea. This was even a thing until recently. I actually thought that I was not very great of a singer but I’ve heard. Differently. I think people forget how much goes into music, the notes, the dictation of the words, breathing from your diaphragm, and just actually feeling what you’re singing. After I realized that part, it didn’t matter what anybody thought of me when I was singing. That’s when singing for me became a way to express my feelings. I just think it’s beautiful that you guys are so encouraging. Please keep up that positive energy! ❤

I think the difference for a lot of people is that sure, anyone can learn to control their pitch, vibrato, etc. But some people's voices are just more melodic and have a better tone. There's just something special about certain singers that you can't learn with practice. My voice will never have the same angelic tone that many popular singers have no matter how perfect my pitch is etc.

I’ve always loved singing. From the age of 5 I used to sing with my sister recording onto tape. I dabbled a bit as a teen in at church got pregnant at 20 and had health problems from the age of 37 to 51. I didn’t sing again til I was mid 40s and feeling life passing me by when I found a karaoke bar which was the first time I sang in public since being a teen. That progressed to open mic many years later if I could find someone to play for me and being in a band for a few years which fizzled out before lockdown. Ive been told I’ve got a good voice and some say it’s quiet some say its strong or it’s sweet. I’m now 60 and not sung in public for over two years. Lost my confidence, feel old and that I never really got started. I don’t play an instrument. But singing makes me feel alive. I wish I knew how to get back out there. I was never hugely confident and often came away from an open mic feeling like a crap singer. That’s why I want to partake in the live stream. I really want to get back to my passion. Really feel lost since covid.

To be honest I didn't think about being a singer until the last conversation I had with my aunt before she passed away I got brave to actually sing in front of her to see her reaction as she would tell you if she didn't like your voice and she stopped singing and listened to me and told me afterwards that she could see herself listening to me sing anytime. I'd thought about being a songwriter as I do like to write but I struggle with confidence as well as I'm shy and an extreme introvert so overcoming those obstacles is not an easy task. I was surprised to hear her say that as singing isn't something I've ever really done in front of people so I decided to look up how to sing and get and stay on pitch etc and came across your channel recently. thanks. :)

I've always loved singing. As a kid, I always looked up to my favorite punk bands. I spent hours singing in my room and loved it. When I was about 16, my friends and I loved playing SingStar on the PlayStation. That's when the first idea came up to start a band. Since I was good at SingStar, I'd be the singer for the first time, haha. But since I had trouble with some notes and couldn't really let myself go in the rehearsal room, I was immediately hit with the 'you can't sing' hammer. After that statement, I was devastated. I always thought I could sing well. But my 'friends' didn't feel that way, and so I was out of the band. I sang less and less and convinced myself that I simply couldn't sing and probably never would learn. I couldn't afford singing lessons. So I stopped singing altogether and started playing bass. When I joined a band as a bassist, I was supposed to do background vocals with the bass. I agreed. Finally, singing was fun again, even though it was just a few lines in the background. My musical taste changed and I started listening to bands like Linkin Park or Slipknot. Screaming became my new passion. I secretly trained for months because my bandmates had really put me down the last time I tried to sing clean. I joined a new band. So bassist and screamer. We recorded an EP together and had fun. When our clean singer wasn't there, I tried to sing his parts and only got laughed at. So I withdrew from clean singing and only screamed anymore. The band broke up. I joined a new band again. Again as a screamer. When I also took over clean parts here, I was praised for my singing for the first time. That gave me new self-confidence. Now I'm 34 years old and have been singing clean almost daily for a year. I'm not the best singer and can't afford singing lessons due to time and work constraints. So I try to find and practice as much as possible on KZbin. Videos like this show me that I'm not alone with this desire and that others feel the same way I do. That gives me courage. I'm going to sing both screams and clean with my new band. I won't let anything stop me. Sorry for my english😅 I'm from Germany and Wright IT with a translator App😂

Loved this! ❤ Sometimes I question if I’m a good singer or not… I am super critical of my voice. But I love to sing and others always compliment me. But I can be pretty shy about singing in front of others. I think we can sometimes be our own worst enemy when it comes to realizing our own talent or potential. I auditioned to sing the National anthem at a baseball game and got selected. It was the first time performing in front of a large crowd in YEARS. I was so nervous haha! I had some nerves in the beginning but overall it went super well! I didn’t forget the words, I hit the right notes. I was proud of myself for overcoming my fear. But what I didn’t expect was for so many people to come up to me afterwards and tell me how great they thought my singing was. It really made all the practicing and putting myself out there worth it. And confirmed to me that I can indeed sing. 🥹❤️🎶

One day I just belted it out and it felt like I’d been reborn. I never knew I could feel that level of bliss. I began taking lessons and have improved to where I regularly do karaoke and have performed 3 songs with a 5 piece band. I’m loving the process.❤❤❤

I've always dreamed of becoming a singer since I was a little girl. However, I've always struggled to sing in front of others due to my lack of self confidence. Fast forward to just about half a year ago, I moved to a new province and I'm told my next door neighbor has a recording studio and has played in bands all his life. I wanted so badly to go ask to see his studio but knew I wouldn't have the confidence to do anything after that. Just a couple weeks later, he comes up to my house to introduce himself and ask me to work for him (handling his social media accounts). Obviously I'm ecstatic because I get to surround myself with music and do what I love (music, filming and editing). A couple months go by and I FINALLY get the courage to sing in front of him. I sang one verse and he proceeded to tell me that we would add another meeting to our weekly schedule for rehearsal for me. I was so excited but also started questioning whether or not he heard me correctly (etc). A couple months of rehearsal and i'm doing my first show. It was a little NYE gig in the restaurant in our town. He was not giving me the option to back out. So I went on nervous AF and it went better than I could have imagined. I cried at the comments I was receiving. Now i'm nervous for my next gig but he is so right, the encouragement I have received is what keeps me going for it, and I always receive it when I need it most. This life is truly a blessing and I'm so grateful for every opportunity I get to surround myself with my passion. If you've read all of this, TAKE THAT LEAP, you never know what's on the other side of fear (most of the time, it's blessings.) xo

I want to find the confidence, but somehow even the idea that I have a band who like my voice isn't enough (none of them are exactly the type to give compliments or share feelings). I need real encouragement and it's so hard to find. Guess I'll go broke paying for vocal lessons to get it 😅

@@Skoopyghost 😅 I'm 34. No more grades left for me, but thank you for being encouraging. My dyscalculia actually messes with my timing (trying to read a clock as a kid was a blast!) which makes it even worse because it isn't about learning theory or reading music (I could do that if I focused) but about it being extra difficult for me to accurately perceive passing time... that's the part where I fall on my face. It's just way too easy to get lost and counting makes it worse (because... numbers). I can sing my band's original songs but it takes some unusual methods and I couldn't do it live.

I've been a bass player since forever. I sang backups but never took singing seriously. When we couldn't find a singer I got real serious and took voice lessons and worked really hard on all aspects of singing. First gig was 3 sets and people kept coming up to me and telling me what a great singer I was. It really puts your fears to rest. Especially when it's soundmen telling you this. But you can't get there without taking the chance. And you better not take the chance until you work really hard on the material and you know it backwards and forwards.

When I was younger, I always wanted to sing and play guitar in the loudest band I could, and after many failed bands, I started taking vocal lessons when I was 19. I'm now 21, and I'm in three bands (guitarist in two, drummer in one) and one of my band mates has told me that I should sing more, even though I'm not the most experienced in singing live, and since then, I've been taking steps towards becoming a great singer. I've continued my lessons, I've gone to karaoke nights at venues, you name it. Actually, at the last karaoke night I went to, many of the people in the crowd said that I had what it takes to be a singer in a band and when I finished my set in the band I play drums for tonight, I had a few people from that karaoke night come up to me (same venue and everything) and ask me when I was gonna play a show where I was singing and doing my thing. It moved me so much, I've called up my connections in my local scene and am booking gigs as we speak. I've found that as I keep singing live, I get more and more comfortable with it. When I sung in public for the first time last year, I was awful. I was having panic attacks, I was cracking, my tone was awful, and jump forward to now, and I'm much better. It feels seamless, it feels natural, and I feel more confident too! I still have a long way to go, but I'm really stoked with my progress thus far and can only see where my persistence and hard work will get me in the future!

When I was maybe 8 yrs old my 3 older sisters used to record themselves harmonizing commercial jingles or pop songs of that era (circa late ‘60s) and would join in. They all had great choir-type voices, great pitch, straight tones with no vibrato, and while they never complimented my singing, they never told me I sucked either so I took that as a positive, and besides, my contribution sounded fair on the tape playback. That was the only organized singing for me until in my 30’s when my wife encouraged me to join the church choir so I did although I was petrified. The choir director and her husband lead that ministry, her husband being the cantor. That was January of 94. Though I couldn’t read music I sight read well and picked up harmony lines more easily than most, also helped some of the others with their parts. By December of that year the director and her husband asked me to sing a solo song for Christmas. I was sooo nervous but their encouragement was huge because I was in awe of hers and her husband’s talent; great singers. I’ve never thought of myself as a soloist; still don’t. My love is singing harmony! The next year, a fellow choir member, a soprano who sang for weddings at the time asked me to sing a wedding with her and harmonize. I began singing all of her weddings with her and even started singing them on my own before long. I soon became a backup cantor at our church and about 12 years ago became the main cantor when health issues forces our cantor to step down. I am still the cantor and still sing weddings although I’ve been trying to retire. Point to this is a church with an open choir is a great place to start singing and possibly find out if you are meant to be a singer. A few things to remember as you grow…be on a mission to please even though you cannot please everyone. Practice, practice, practice and put your heart into your song. Be open to critique. If someone constructively criticizes you, that means they think your voice is worth the effort. And last, humility is a really soft cushion for when one falls flat on their face.

I have been singing for my church at Fifth Sunday Night Singing. I get up and do a couple of songs. It is fun. I enjoy it when people can get into what I am singing. When I leave that night after hearing all the different churches sing, I am filled with the Holy Spirit. I would also like to have more places to sing in. I was at church today, and the lady sitting in front of me told me that I had a beautiful voice. That just made me happy. I'm not the best singer in the world, but it does make me happy.

I think I have what it takes, including some basic natural talent. Sadly, I also have crippling stage fright, that makes it impossible to sing in front of people. I've tried...it was SO bad! So, like many people, I only sing when I know I'm alone...in the shower/etc. My wife and kids stood outside the bathroom while I showered one day and recorded me. I had no idea they were there or that they were even home(or I wouldn't have done it), and I just let it rip. I sang everything I though I could hit for a good 15 minutes. It felt SO good and RIGHT! When I walked out of the bathroom, still in a towel, they started clapping and cheering. I was absolutely mortified. My 16 year-old son, who never seems to like anything I do, said "Holy **** dad, You're amazing!". Despite that level of praise and acceptance, I still can't do it. I've tried and it was garbage. I don't know how to get around this and it's horrible. Kind of a waste, really. The irony is, for my career, I spend a lot of my time in front of people and communicating. You'd think that I would be able to get past it, but I can't. I admire those of you who can just get up there and do it. Hats off to you and much respect!

My story?! OMG that was a long time ago! I was probably 16 at the time and I tried out for the musical "Damn Yankees". They wanted me to sing and I was not having it. So the vocal director for the production ask that I go to his office and do an audition anyway as I was going to be a part of the chorus singing background. I agreed and he looked at me and said why didn't you audition, you have a wonderful voice and you could have easily gotten a part in the show. So for me I guess may I had natural talent but didn't really do music lessons as my family couldn't afford it. So I joined choir and did that. It carried in to college and I sung in the community choir for my college. It was fun and the director put me in as a Tenor 2. At that time I noticed I could sing from bass to soprano and my voice didn't break. I was with a person at that time and received a lot of ridicule because I "sounded like a girl". So I quit the choirs and just got on with life, just singing in my car. So for a long time and even till today I lack some confidence in singing in front of people. On songs I know it is not a problem, on songs I love to sing I mess up. That is because I would prefer to sing a Whitney song. But that is my story...

It's funny, I've been a songwriter for about thirty years and I feel like I had much more confidence in my singing when I was younger. Of course, back then, I don't think I had the ear to tell if I was on pitch, or not. Now, that I've developed an ear, I've become more self-conscious and I tend to scrutinize every note. I think I had more fun when I was an unskilled singer, because no one had the heart to tell me I was singing off key. So, I just let it out. Now, I'm looking for a balance. I actually have a gig coming up and I'm thinking about tuning my guitar down a half a step, so I can hit the notes easier. It's amazing how elusive my confidence is when it comes to singing.

One of my girl best friends turned around and asked, “are you doing the talent show?” (this was around the end of the song, and the talent show was the day after this one). My middle school class was VERY musical. There was a select few songs that if you started singing any part of, almost everyone would pick up and sing along. I love singing and songwriting and am very uncomfortable with singing in front of people but not because I think I sound bad or I'm afraid I'm going to mess up. I remember someone saying that voices sound different to other people than how t he speaker hears it themself, same with on video. What really bothered me was the idea that I might think I sound good but other people won't. So when everyone would be singing these few songs, most people, including me, would sing it in a joking voice so people wouldn't think we were actually trying. It really messed with my vocal growth.

I've been analazing every song, every line since I started to listen to music (I was too young to remember), but obviously that's the part people didn't see. And when you don't see someone's hard work, you simply name it "talent". And how much of hard work we don't see ourselves? I was literally thinking that every person on this planet was analizing songs. I had to grow up and realize that seems like it was only MY hobby (or "hard work"). So yeah, one day I decided that I was meant to be a prof video editor, and here I am. Today I can decide that I'm meant to be a singer. And no doubts I will be one with hard work. Which they will later call talent just like they call all my other hard work.

My issue is that I am a bass and by that I mean like a super bass. The simply sing app that is supposed to help people develop their singing voice doesn't go low enough for my vocal range. Like I mean Colter Wall deep. Frank Sinatra is at the higher end of my vocal range but I have trouble hanging with some of his higher notes.

Grew up surrounded by music. Went 5 years without signing though and I’ve been told I have a lovely tone I just need to work on my pitch. Really trying to nail getting the pitch right like it used to.

I got to know that I can be a singer when I was in 4-5 class and my age was less or equal than 10 years old my whole class was literally crazy about songs but I didn't liked to listen to songs, I thought that it's boring, but one day, I thought that everyone in my class knows atleast one song. I should also learn it and I did that night I listened to that song I don't know how many times and I worte it down and sang. There was one part of the that I just couldn't do it but still I tried and after some hrs I learnt the harmony but noy the lyrics because it was hard for me to learn it. I went school the next day and in between the class ( yes in the between of a class when the teacher was teaching) I sang that song obviously I was singing sotly so that the teacher couldn't hear me. Then the one of students who sat in front of me said who is singing then I said that I am then they all laughed at me and then I just told myself that I would never sing again never ever but after class she said that she sings so good then the other students who laughed at me said that please please sing again and I didn't wanted to but still I sang and they appreciated me and I felt motivated. After that incident every one knew that I sing good and wanted to hear a song from me.😏😏🙃🙃
