I watched an interview with a guy from Venezuela. He said they have to keep water bottles in the freezer because they only have power for about 12 hours a day so the frozen water bottles keep their food cold between power outages. I thought that was good advice.

Keeping frozen water jugs in your freezer is always a good idea. We keep our freezers full of frozen water jugs and take them out only when we need the space for frozen meat or vegetables. We find the freezers don’t have to work as hard because the ice helps to regulate the freezing temperature, plus when we do have power outages (it is Texas!!), like was stated, it keeps the unit frozen longer.

Hey there.........I am from zimbabwe so we constantly have load shedding or we can go without power for days. The longest was for 2 weeks due to a fault. That is why we have a huge generator, we have a solar geyser and have a solar battery farm for the fridges etc.....I also have a borehole with a 10000l tank attached. Power outage is the norm for us on this side of the world. Just thought I would share

Everyone should remember also…canned veggies have liquid in them. You would want to conserve every bit of liquid and it could go into soups, stews, or making that rice or pasta.

When we’ve had a really bad storm…power out for 6 days…as soon as power went out, I took most of my blankets and comforters and draped them over my freezer. It insulated everything and after 6 days..it was still frozen solid.

Because they feared being bombed if they could find CITYS. blackout curtains that completely covered the windows were MANTORY from sundown to daybreak. Any light showing thru ment court. It was strictly enforced.

I spend most of my day outside anyway so no power.. I’d survive. My grandparents didn’t have power, my mom didn’t have power growing up. Humans are pretty resilient. I prefer no noise of generators etc. Food, garden and ways to do things by hand.

Canning up your meat in freezer into meal in a jar. Dehydrating fruit and vegetables. Make boiling bag meals that are like the ones you purchase. It's very simple all you need is a cup of full boiling water..let it set 5 minutes and enjoy. There is so many things you can do to prepare for disasters.

For those who live in outer rural areas, we mostly live by the Lost Pioneer ways. Most times winter storms could leave us with no power for weeks on end. We tend to live off our land,raising crops and livestock. It's a totally different way of life.

I stock both, but I prefer evaporated milk in a can, only because water may be scarce and you'd have to use some of your valuable water to add to the powdered milk. If stored properly in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, fat free powdered milk has a much longer storage life though. I've also been getting the Gossner Farms shelf stable milk cartons from the Dollar Tree because it's such a great value and has a 1 yr or 1.5 yr shelf life.

Packed freezers and full fridges stay colder longer. If your fridge is mostly empty of food then fill it with small bottles of water so it will maintain coolness in a power outage. Also, something I learned after an earthquake: keep finger food, granola bars, peanut butter cups, and the like in a little jar on the kitchen counter because those will tide you over. Always, ALWAYS keep flashlights all over the house. Make sure they are good with batteries. Electricity was out for more than 24 hours. That meant no ATM, too, so keep cash in small bills on hand, because credit cards won't work. NO gas, too. All that runs on electricity. And a weather band radio came in handy, it let me know about the aftershocks. Yes: California. But this info also goes in a tornado (been in one of those, too, in Texas) and an ice storm, (yep, in Texas). Even if an event like that lasts for only 24 hours, it's very scary. You can do it, just think ahead and you'll be less stressed when/if it happens.

The day after Thanksgiving I go and pick up usually 3-10 turkey carcuses to make bone broth. Some of the bones I can no longer get as the original owners use and bottle. At least they're not filling up the garbage dump and more people are more prepared

powdered bone broth is full of nutrition. It has amino acids and aside from protein needs, it can replace meat in a pinch. Easy to store...long shelf life. A little pricey though.

You can cook rice with a tiny amount of water and fuel by just covering the grains with water, bring it to the boil and then letting it sit for half an hour to absorb.

I dehydrate my cooked rice to be able to just add hot water in my food thermos with the rice. It rehydrates to original cooked state. I use the dehydrated rice while traveling or camping but in a SHTF situation it will save fuel by just boiling water for a few minutes rather than cooking the raw rice. My husband loves his sweet rice as a dessert so very easy to make by heating up the rice with water and milk, sugar and cinnamon in a few minutes.

Instant rice that comes in box can be good for backpack. You can put in plastic jar with water (I save mayo plastic containers for that) and while you hike or unable to cook it soaks up water. No, it's not hot liked boiled rice, but you won't starve and save jet fuel cans.

I'm ready! No problem with a lights out situation. I have a Gas Honda generator, with over flow container, and enough fuel for a month -non stop. Solar-2200w generator with two panels. One 500w Jackery with solar panels. Enough water for two people for 6 months to a year. Enough preps for three years. Three burner hot plate, one grill, and a firer place with grills. And more then enough hotels with backup generators within ten miles. I'm ready.

As someone who's been prepping for a while, I never feel like I have enough. But in reality, we're in great shape. We might be a little uncomfortable in this heat, but we will be okay. Just remember to use you preps sparingly, since u don't know how long power will be out. Candles and solar chargers are your new best friends. Keep sterno & the little 1-burner metal grid to put it in ($6 or so at Walmart). Keep preppin & prayin & be blessed!!!

So ready for power loss here, between my home built backup solar system and about 20 or so power stations lol I am ready. I actually hesitate some now when the power goes out. If it lasts more than an hour then I start getting backups going. Been burned too many times getting everything set up only to have the power go back on once I am set up Once its been an hour then I get stuff ready to go. You mention a good point on cameras, I have done a few vids on various cam systems I use as well as a TRC-3 Seismic Intrusion Detector in the front yard that can hear any movement. Just picked up some 12 vlt fridges just for this reason. If you have your freezer 1/2 packed you can always fill it with water bottles to pack it up.

I always keep my freezer full. Use bottles of water if I need to. It’s more economical to keep them full. I have a propane stove. No power, no problem. You can also use your bbq grill to bake.

There are expiry dates on bottled water. It is almost impossible to make anything 100% sterile. That is the problem, it's never clean going in.

Water does not expire but what happens is that chemicals might leach into it especially depending on its container & ofcourse how it’s stored. The safest way to drink any water is to run it through a water filter something like a Berky or something comparable.

We always had a generator for when the power went out but this time its broke and the power went out. Omg. It stayed out all night even and wasnt put back on untill the next day. Thank goodness we had candles and flashlights. Im also thankful I had a jug of water. Buy a manual can opener so if neccessary you can at least eat out of a can.

Total up all the water you will need to cook the food items that call for water. It will give you a good idea of how much water you will need to set aside for those food items. Your tip about using canned broth is a great idea. Another option is to use the water inside canned vegetables, including canned mushrooms, asparagus, and beets. Some contain more water than others. It might be a good idea to keep a log of how much water is in each can you open between now and when the water supply stops. Hopefully, we'll lose electricity before we lose water. It would buy us some time to collect enough water for the products that will need it. But, it would be best if we go ahead and set aside that amount now while it's accessible. Keep in mind that water heaters contain some water. Ours holds 40 gallons, which should be plenty. However, we will need to make sure that if/when the water stops coming into the house, we will need to keep track how much water is being removed from the tank. Once the level of water in the tank starts dropping on tanks that run on natural gas, any air space in the tank will grow hot, and what we will end up with is a potential bomb scenario. So, the best thing to do if the water stops, is to turn the temp control to off so the heater won't turn on. If any of your neighbors have gas water tanks, and they are not aware of this, it could lead to a volatile situation if they use up all the water in their tanks. Also, there's an outlet near the bottom of most tanks to which a garden hose can be connected. Measure the diameter of the outlet to make sure the garden hose is the same diameter. After attaching the hose, add a garden hose nozzle and then run the hose to the bathroom and/or the kitchen as needed. I think they make a splitter so that two hoses can be attached instead of one. Run one to the kitchen and the other to the bathroom. Unfortunately, even 40 gallons will not last very long. A nearby swimming pool, lake, creek, rain barrel, or river would come in great for obtaining enough water for toilet flushing and other needs (but not for cooking or drinking). Which prompts me to mention water purification filters and containers large enough to transport water from local water sources back to the house. If you can't drive to the location, a wheeled garden cart would come in handy, unless, of course, you love lugging water.

Very helpful information for everyone here. I've heard about the water that will still be left in your water heater tank, just didn't know exactly how to access it, but it's a good idea to figure that out now. 40 gallons is a nice buffer. I have about 70 gallons stored, and plan to use rainwater collection as another source (along with my water filtration systems). I am surrounded by salt water and would not have to walk too far to collect it. I could use that for washing/ flushing, but bringing it back would be a big pain...I need to look into getting one of those rolling cart things, like the ones that people put their kids in when they're young and going trick-or-treating, lol. It's good to have a few plans in place before it gets to that point.

Minimum formula is 1 gallon of water per day, per person. 1/2 gallon a day per animal/pet allowing that they can drink rainwater (if it rains). So a family of 4, prepping for 2 week of grid down, needs 56 Gal of water in storage. That does not include flushing or bathing.

@@sunshinestatesurvival Amazon sells a portable shower product. On one end of the hose there's a battery-operated pump and on the other end of the hose is a shower head. Amazon sells several brands and some come with a nozzle gun plus a shower head. I added one to my "shopping cart" a few days ago. Some have better water pressure than others, so compare them if you decide to buy one. The instructions say to place the pump into a bucket of water and hang the end with the shower head on a tree or other vertical support. If the water company turns off the water supply, I bet you can set this portable shower up inside your bathtub area. And instead of using a bucket of water, place the pump inside the water tank on the back of your toilet. If your toilet is close to your tub, it looks like the hose would be long enough to reach that tank. That way, when the water level in the tank gets low, simply pour more water into it. In effect, the tank would merely serve as your bucket. And if you place what they call a marine tub (the one with a rope handle on each end) inside your tub area to stand in while you shower, the marine tub will collect that waste water, which can then be used for other purposes, such as washing floors. If the water treatment plant is shut down, whatever goes down the drain will eventually be forced back up into your house; therefore, it would be a good idea to plug the drain holes in your tubs and sinks. The hole in the floor beneath your toilet will also need to plugged to prevent sewer gases from backing up into your home. Home improvement stores sell those type of plugs. You just have to make sure you buy one the same diameter as the hole in your floor. Another thing that matters is whether or not the hole is flush with the floor or if it is counter-sunk. You might have to get something like a "sleeve" to insert into the hole so that the top portion of it will be high enough from the floor to attach the "plug"...or it may be called a "cap". There are KZbin videos on how to plug that hole, which I highly suggest watching. Unless, of course, you don't mind breathing in sewer gas. In that case, R.I.P. God bless and stay safe.

The safe zone for your refrigerator and freezer will vary greatly depending on the temperature/humidity inside your home. You could get a thermometer that has an alarm so you will know when to plug the appliances in to cool down without having to open the door and try to judge temperature based how cool the milk feels. Also try to fill the empty freezer space with bottled water, it can be used to keep things cold, or as a way of cooling someone if they’ve become overheated.

A few yrs back , the prep. Movie that was on showed the family having to LEAVE Their home .....due to invasion and robbery. The family had to put as much as possible in their backpacks. I'm thinking to start packing water and essentials into individual backpacks beside the boxes we have ready. Most important beside water and matches IS FIRST AID AND MEDS. I ALSO HAVE SMALL. Bottles of bleach and peroxide and soap.

Nice suggestions. A few things here I need to add to my prep. One thing I just recently got was a Electric Generator that charges Solar. There are cheaper options. I got a decent one that did cost me about $1000. But the cheaper options are still really nice. The Generator is a little loud at night. When we got hit a couple of years ago with Michael & before that, Irma, our freezers were good. With (if I remember right) Michael, we were out 77 hours without a power or generator. We always keep a few 2 liters filled with water in the freezers. We fill them about 3 or 4 inches below the top to leave room for expansion. This helped save all the food in the freezers for longer. I’m sitting here watching this video on my phone while it is plugged in and recharging on my EcoFlow solar generator. I think I would be OK if my electric went off today. I do a lot of cooking using my solar oven, but it’s cloudy today, so I could use my rice cooker or instant pot and plug it in to my solar generator.

On the propane tanks look on your local market place I’ve bought ten of them for 10 each and 3 100 lb tanks for 50 each . If you pick up used tanks that don’t look good exchange them at local gas station or any place that you can swap out tanks for grills .

Glad your video showed up in my feed. Great video and tips. The solar lights at the Dollar Tree made for outside are great to have for lights in the house. Place the spiked solar lights in a bucket to charge during the day in the sun. Put one in a old jar and place in bathroom, hallway etc. They aren't real bright, but at least you won't trip trying to make it around rooms. If my lights go out the very first thing I'm checking is my phone. Power outage or emp scenario? Frightening, but this is the world we live in now.

yeah it's a good idea to what i call "war game" scenarios to see how you and your family would react. the military and leos do it for training to go overseas or to handle law enforcement type situations of all kinds. you will learn a whole lot if you are honest with yourself. i've heard of one way to help you prep is to actually cut the power to your home for a day. just to get an idea of what will be needed (of course that's assuming you haven't been without power in a while). i can't help you also hone or knock the rust off of your skills and if you got children you can just make it a fun adventure kinda deal as well. this helps them not to be anxious if/when it really happens and it helps them learn skills of their own. and for freezers, especially deep freezers, if they aren't full (because you just started prepping) you can fill the remainder of the space with water either in washed out milk jugs or even small buckets as long as you leave room for the water to expand as it freezes. that will give you that extra time. and it's 4 days for the full deep freezers. thanks for helping your fellow man. Family Dollar stores have large candles for only $1.00. Note remember, if you are on well water your pump won't work. It's important to have back generator and stored water.

I saved for a very long time, and now I have a whole house generator and another full tank of propane. It makes me feel much more secure than just having a full pantry. I've gone through ice storms where there's been no power for a week or so, and this really does give me more of a sense of security, especially living in a very rural area. We aren't exactly high on the list for power to be restored.

@@marge3157With a fire, I'm not sure. They do turn the power off to prevent more fires or adding to existing fires I think..not having communication is scary. It happens here with hurricanes and tornadoes. They cut power off before the storm hits. In a grid down situation they probably would not be Broadcasting. Or in a hurricane situation. Lots to think about. I'm getting a weather radio and make sure I've got batteries. I'm not sure if they give information on fires but I'd hope so. Stay safe.

My bathtub has a slow leak when its full. Keep one or two Rubbermaid Tub empty for storm water prep and put in tub and fill w water before a storm gets crazy and you ll have clean water for cooking, flushing and sponge baths. etc.

We are 7 days away from the 17th anniversary of hurricane Charlie.(I still hear it in my dreams)..we were semi preppers before that...more into it after Charlie (12 days no power...and only Florida natives get how horrendously hot and humid it is after the storm as it takes all the gulf breezes with it)...We STAYED in Port Charlotte, because, really, it wouldnt happen twice in the same spot...right ?? Irma only took our power for 8 days, but that was it. Sold the house and moved to Georgia....only to get hit by Michael, and while only a cat 3...still took our power for 5 days...We are preparing to move to TN now...only major difference being we MUST have a wood stove as if the power goes out in winter, we not only need to cook...we need to heat our home. Two out of state moves, and the biggest uhaul...75% prepping supplies...I can buy new furniture...I cant buy new food/water/cast iron etc for the same price we spent on it.

Yes I’m ready! This happens to my family every few weeks. I just got a power strip which has a battery back up built in it. I use it in my home office so when the power flickers my computer and WiFi doesn’t go out. This happened for a few minutes 2 days ago and the WiFi and computer still running no hiccups or restarting. I’m in an apartment with a terrace, so even though l would love to have a solar generator with panels, too many people would be able to see it which could be dangerous. I keep frozen water bottles in my freezer at all times. I do have plenty of food and water with different ways to cook it...I have a gas stove so if the power goes out l would still be able to use it to cook...Just in case it didn’t work, l also have sterno, two camp stoves and wood that l purchased a while back as well. I also have plenty of batteries, light sources and multiple ways to charge my cellphone. I also have a portable dvd player to keep myself entertained and a fan that works with batteries. If a grid down situation happens in winter, l have plenty of heavy blankets, clothing and socks that can be utilized! I went through Hurricane Sandy and wasn’t prepared back then...that taught me that anything can happen at anytime!

Don’t be fooled by the expiration dates - foods low in acid ( broth, etc) last well beyond the date on can or box! Can/ jar fruit- ready to eat treat. $12- solar flashlight, solar lantern for indoor light. Sheppard’s for first line of defense 😉

We lost power in our camper at the beach July 4th weekend. The power supply shorted out and fried our power cord. It was out for about 24 hours and we ended up in a hotel. We had lanterns, flashlights, batteries, water, and snacks, but had we been home we would have been so much more prepared! I find myself wanting to travel less these days because I want to be near my preps should anything happen.

Me too! We are going on vacation soon, but I'm not as relaxed because you can only pack so much in a camper. Invest in a good surge protector from camping center. Ours put us back over 300, but worth it. To keep others from stealing it, my husband bought a heavy lock to lock it down.

This is good info to spread to the bug out focused crowd. Unless things are extremely ugly, like violent ugly, then no one should bug out anywhere. People have weird fantasies about living off the land, off grid in the middle of nowhere using their ancestors as examples. Well most people's ancestors (all those children people had, the elderly etc) didn't make it or died young. You will never be more comfortable, more prepared, and more able to adapt than at your home with what you have been building over time. If things are ugly I probably wouldn't leave anyway it would be worse outside of my home.

Keep matches, candles, oil lamps and to find them grab on of those strategically placed flashlights you should have in every room. Fill the bathtub with cold water and any food grade containers you have and start filling them. also grab containers that are not food grade that you can fill then with clean water for washing dishes, flushing the toilet etc. Hopefully by this time you've accumulated several different ways to cook without power and to heat as well. Check your pantry which should have everything you will need for at least two weeks.While you are doing these things have someone else make sure your windows are shut and locked. Close those draperies. Once you've checked your supplies and taken care of the rest of it you should be good to go

My 100-watt Renogy panel lets me charge a 100-amp Deep Cycle battery which I can then use for about 80% of my power needs. I can use it with battery chargers to charge batteries for radios, lights, cell phones, tools, notebook computers, tablets, etc. and 3) A chest freezer uses a lot less power than a front opening freezer. I can keep mine cold with less than an hour of generator time a day (using a small Honda 2KW generator). I can even run my freezer on a single deep cycle battery and 1,000-watt inverter if necessary. There's obviously a lot more you will need to do such as coming up with a good way to keep all or a portion of your house warm in the winter, but these 3 things are a good place to start.

I have headlamps that can be charged with a usb. Any small power charger can charge it up. I have the Patriot solar charger for those smaller items like my phone too.

@@suehowie152 I’ve never really noticed because I just put them to charge when camping and haven’t timed it but I definitely will now for future reference. A nomad that lives full time on her RV said to remember the ABC of rving. Which means Always Be Charging. Because of her video I switched to usb headlamps, bug light, neck reading lamp, cuisinart hand blender and a usb Luci light. I’ll test these out to for a grid down situation too! I also have the Jackery 500 and have a Kill a Watt meter so I can be sure that I don’t use any appliance over 500 watts. Hope this helps😊

I have been prepping for a long, long time. I thought I had just about all the answers to all 'preparedness' questions - then, I saw this and your advice to have canned meat broths to supplement water storage for cooking rice and similar dishes. SMART! I love this idea! I want to tell people it was MY idea... THANK YOU! PS. I love our duel fuel gen, too. Likewise, I have far too many propane tanks :) . I have them for back-up lights, heating, cooking, and the generator.

A flashlight always comes in handy. Maybe you can get snack food, too, the ready to eat beef jerky and peanuts along with cookies and crackers, perhaps, and a some sweets will make your tummy happy in cases of power outages.

Great reminder video about power outages and being prepared! I view a power outage kind of like camping out with the family. I don’t panic. I have a generator and necessary supplies, equipment, etc. I live out in the woods too so it adds some adventure. I highly recommend solar lights like the one you showed. I have them all over the place where I live. It’s very helpful. Broth- you are correct. I have a family of four. So I buy that stuff by the case as a back up as well. Great video!

Great idea on propane tank. For last couple of years I've been picking up tanks left at road for trash pickup. Then take them to exchange places and get a new tank and filled for 20.00. Have accumulated 11 20 lb tanks full this way

Canned veges or fruit--save that water or juice to cook soups/pasta or oatmeal. Can also flavor h2o with the juice. Pasta, like rice or beans, can be PRE-SOAKED. Then pasta only needs to be heated up with sauce. *** Toilet-a medical rehab toilet chair. Mom needed post-surgery. Holds 250#, has handles, and is regular height. The little bucket-plastic grocery bags, or camping toilet bags. The plastic folding toilet is for Twiggy.
