I think you should still use Mylar bags even if you want to store food even for less than 10 years. Most food at the store doesnt last for more than 1-2 years now a days so just make smaller batches for your food u will use agter a year and then make 30 pounds for later and put in a bucket. I have buckets with 30 pounds but they are still in small bags so i dont expose more than what i will need. I like to use one gallon and one quart bags bc i dont need to use a 5 gallon bag for flour… im never going to be using 5 gallons of rice or flour or anything at one time. Best to just use many small bags as soon as u buy things for storage… my opinion….it will be worth it in the long run.

Shame on you for the clickbait title. Some newbies may see that and investigate no further, thinking that Mylar is bad. They are in a hurry after all, having just woken up.

I disagree. Mylar bags are definitely NOT a waste of time & money, even if you're just getting started. Some foods lose texture, flavor & nutritional value in a short amount of time. And not all maylar bags are pricey. I get 100 high quality 10 mm bags for $27 (50 gallon/50 quart size w/ O2 absorbers). And if you get a subscription, you can save even more. Wallaby is a good brand but very high priced. Just make sure the bags you get are at least 7mm & bpa free/food grade & most come with Oxygen absorbers. It's also worth it to get an inexpensive vacuum sealer. You can find them on sale for under $50. This us your family's food security. It's worth it to go the extra mile to ensure all your hard work, time, money, energy, (& food) isn't wasted.

I am 65 and I frequently pray that someone has to throw all this stuff out after I'm gone and all the while they are going on about all my wasted time and money. But as we sit here in 2024 awaiting a potentially nasty election I keep freeze drying and packing it away.

Clean and fill 2 ltr soda bottles with water and treat with 8 drops of bleach. Store under all your sinks for cleaning and flushing emergencies. Also, old school, put bay leaves in the bottom of your 5 gal storage buckets of dry goods. They do keep the bugs away!

@hertechprep I keep my bug out bag in the house, so its temperature regulated. It's probably not the best idea to keep it out in your vehicle... But honestly, I used these same canisters while backpacking and it got pretty hot out there

I would never wipe off the crumbs with a wet towel. I use a dry paper towel and it works great. Also, I fill all my bags and then open the OA's so they will not be absorbing oxygen while I work.

I AM new to Mylar bags, not prepping but I wondered if you can help me. I got a bag of wallaby Mylar bags, 300cc O2 absorbers filled my bags, put in the absorbers, zipped them closed & heat sealed them. They are 1 quart bags so 300cc should be plenty?? After 2 days my bags are ALL still soft. I understand that nitrogen isn’t removed, but if the bag is still soft, how can I KNOW my foods are safe???!!!😳😳i didnt open my absorbers until all bags were ready , popped them in quickly zipped them closed & heat sealed. I’m kinda upset because I spent my money on them and haven’t gotten the results I thought they would produce!!!😢

Why not use a vacuum sealer such as a food saver? It seals with heat too. I know you can’t seal powders (flour for instance) with a vacuum sealer, but what about vegetables, beans and rice? And yes, a real sense of urgency. I have 105 #10 cans of freeze dried food and will soon be buying more.

"Not your job to worry about people scamming you" when others can need it. Meanwhile i bought over 100.00 worth for a homeless person a food at the Dollar tree because she was holding up a sign saying that she needed it for her family she took money from somebody else and then she left and did not come back. I specifically talked to her and she said she just needed anything. And so my money went to waste. I'm not going to waste my money on people who are just going to waste my time. The fact you said that made me not even want to watch you anymore

You can also use glass jars. Put oxygen absorbers in bottom of jar then fill up. Dont use oxygen absorbers for sugar and salt, as it makes them hard.
