I remember going to giant arena shows in the late 90s. I remember seeing Limp Bizkit at their peak. Korn at their peak. Both arenas were filled. I mosh pitted, crowd surfed, and high fived the artist while being squashed against the stage barricade. Those tickets were only $20-$30. And anyone could get them. I was just first in line at the grocery store, music store, or any other place that had a Ticket Master kiosk. The ticket fee was $2. Now any pit tickets are sold to rich people who just want to post a pic of themselves at the concert on their instagram page.

Thank you for explaining this mess so well and for not solely making it look like a Taylor Swift issue. I've seen a lot of people in those social media 'fandom wars' say things like this was never a problem before Taylor went on tour. Which is obviously untrue. Random side note that screams 'fuck you ticketmaster': Taylor Swift actually did opt out of dynamic pricing, which was why a lot of people were angry at her at first and were saying she was just money hungry. Turns out Ticketmaster found a loophole within their own 'rule'. As long as tickets stay within the set range the artist agreed to, in this case the price range was $49-$449, then they can technically make the worst seats still $449. That's why the only tickets that were still available and not resale were nosebleeds for $400+ dollars. All this to basically say that Ticketmaster is insanely sneaky and tricky, when when they look like they are trying to help the artist. As someone who has been getting tickets and going to a lot of shows recently, it's rarely been a smooth ride. It took 3 different sales for me to get Paramore tickets. Arctic Monkeys tickets were a stressful situation as well, it's gonna be really interesting to see if anything happens now that arguably the biggest pop star in the world faced the affects of the monopoly, seeing how congress is now getting involved. Great video!

wow thank you for this! and yeah dynamic pricing shouldn't be a thing, I think a lot more people would appreciate non-transferable tickets if it meant stable pricing. sorry to hear it was rough getting tickets for those other shows :\

Firstly, just want to say I think you're genuinely one of the best music-centered creators out there. It's just a matter of time before you're doing crazy numbers! Your videos are always super insightful and in many cases have changed the way I think about something. As for ticketmaster, I really think the only answer is legislation. Anything short of literally every major artist uniting to boycott them that's the only way things will change. I think there should be a cap on the price tickets can be resold at, using ticketing bots should be made specifically illegal, and perhaps venues should even have to reserve a certain amount of tickets for day of show in person purchase.

In high school we went to some of the biggest tours and shows with our little part-time, minimum wage jobs. We saw so many shows at the height of their popularity. Metallica, Live, Hootie and the Blowfish, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, U2.... and we did it all on the part-time pay of a convenience store clerk. Now I'm looking at $236 for a Luke Combs show. Coldplay, Beyonce, Foo Fighters are $400. Seems concerts are no longer affordable entertainment for everybody. Who is even paying $500 or more for a concert?

I live in Malaga (Spain) a big city, and since many years, we don't have any major shows anymore (not even the most successful spanish artists), they go to some near villages like Marbella and Fuengirola with extremely high tickets prices. I was wondering why suddenly no one comes to the big city... and obviously it's because the venues of my city don't have a contract with livenation/ticketmaster but in these villages they do. I have just noticed this after the Bruce springsteen/taylor swift/ ticketmaster disaster in the USA and seeing that a famous spanish singer is coming to my city (the only one :() but he's NOT a livenation artist...dynamic pricing+ so called VIP tickets shouldn't exist but unfortunetaly crazy fans pay a fortune encouraging these outrageous prices...

"And while maybe this conversation seems political" it IS political. Part of the root of the issue was the DoJ approving the merger, right? People gotta stop avoiding politics, 'cause that's EXACTLY what those in power wants for us: to stay alienated from politics, so they can hold their power and do whatever they want. Life IS politics, our feelings ARE political. As long as you live ON EARTH you gotta get to know politics, even if you're not thoroughly involved. I mean, native indigenous people living in the middle of the Amazon should understand politics because their destinies are being dictated by people they never even heard of through systems they didn't even chose to be a part of and aren't even heard. So yeah, we who live amidst such political systems need to understand them and make use of them. Get f*cking political.
@sergescardigno
@sergescardigno Жыл бұрын
It's a conversation that obviously has political implications, but the sentiment behind enjoying performance art for a reasonable price feels more like a part of the core human experience that should be built-in. The point was to say this topic (to me), isn't a political issue, it's basic human decency. In reality, unfortunately, yes, it's a political issue.

So does the ticket increase mean that when tickets go on sale at a specific venue on a specific day they go up? Or is this an average across every location globally based on locations that open before others that feeds into the local venue prices? Im thinking the “bots” are not factoring in the local average of show goers that will buy a ticket (btw, it’s probably not a bot but a terrible data feed that doesn’t factor in local economies)

Secular music is demonic Music was created for worship Ask yourself who you're worshipping or what are you worshipping. God sent His Son Jesus for all of us. We should worship Him not the emptiness of this world. Repent, ask Jesus in your heart and get baptized instead of following people that don't give two hoots about you. ✝️ The Travis Scott concert should've put a complete halt on all concerts or at least creating a complete boycott.🕊️ Had to edit this something was put up my message I'm pretty sure I didn't type. Ehh, as a non-music fan. Live music is a luxury. I support price controls and market intervention to provide true human necessities, like food, housing and electricity. Not seeing a concert is nowhere near as vital. On the upcoming artists point, more expensive tickets _also_ mean more money in the music industry, which may then spend more money developing and supporting upcoming artists (or at least, it should, unless everyone involved is thinking very short-term).

Live music is a leisure activity, but not one that's inherently worth more than 4 figures on any given day. And I don't necessarily believe in trickle down economics like you described. A private party will always step in (ticketmaster) to take their share.

You are just talking nonsense. I was thinking of going to see the local chamber music orchestra next weekend but they want $40 bucks. These use to be $10-20 concerts and half the place would be empty. There will be absolutely no one at this concert for $40 bucks. I would suspect many concerts are losing money and some of these moves are from desperation to try to stay afloat. The mid level touring artist has to be getting crushed.

If the band takes forty percent of the take at seventy an average sale price that's 400k for one gig do that 60 times a year that's 25mill a year the band takes half and the road and lawyers and managers divide the rest anyway you look at it it's still good money and you still have the rep that the fans are more important than the $. Because most rock stars didn't get into it just for the money. They did it to be somebody among the masses. The dead hardly took time off from touring and they sold out every friggin show without fail. rockstars should think about this because they are looking at CEO money and not working like CEOs which is ridiculous but shoot three concerts a week and time to inspire themselves creatively and still have a home life if they choose and I hope they do because it is important to the human experience. Spouse and children make you realize there's something more to life than just the cerebral or the physical but hearing the word daddy from your progeny for the first time takes you to another level of humanity. Partying is fine and sometimes good but doing the human experience is also. Having it all is the whole point of being rockstar. PS the last dead show I paid was like nineteen dollars with taxes and service fees in the bay area.

Boycott Ticketmaster, for the price of a concert today plus travel and accom and food and drink, i could easily afford a 2 week trip abroad! I havent used them since i paid for Black Crowes in Manchester for £69 in 2019 and saw the show in 2022 cos of COVID! I thought it was overpriced then and I'd rather see smaller bands like Dirty Honey who don't seem to use Ticketmaster for £20 yet still afford to do world tours each year!

congress allowed the merger, they are solely to blame, but individual artists also have to take some of it, last year we saw Alice Cooper in Reno, even with fees tickets were around $65, same venue this year with Rob Zombie, back row seats with fees over $117, I'm not paying that, there's no justification for almost doubling the price !

Let's say there is no Ticketmaster. Where are these bands going to get all the money to pay all the people that help the band. The band pays the lighting, electric, rodees, merch booth and more. Back then bands would eat sandwiches and sleep over at friends house or in the van. They had no money. everyone owes everyone money.

At the stadium tour high end it is ultimately supply/demand. I really have no problem with biggest artist charging whatever they want. The mid level is totally messed up through from losing clubs from Covid and inflation. In upstate NY, enough venues closed during covid that we have shit going on this summer for concerts. With the venue loss and inflation the mid level artist have to jack up prices to levels that hurt demand or it just isn't worth it. I would drive to see Deathgrips this summer but not for $100 bucks. I could afford it but it is just not worth it. Not paying $10 for a $5 hamburger either. I can easily find 5 concerts right now that I would go to this summer if I had a 50% off coupon. Instead I will go to zero. This is just the final nail in the coffin of the old music scene. Your either a pop star or sorry , do something else.

No its not, you should look at what is delivered aswell. No artist is worth over 100 bucks per person. The product just isn't there. 3.5 hour plus big event, maybe, but that is based on labor anbd product. Claiming its morally right for everybody to just slap a price on a product is nonsense, especially if your target audience is below 18 y.o.

Harry styles managers Azoff are the ones that merged Live Nation and Ticketmaster and Oakview group that own and run venues. I blame Harry styles as an artists because he is family friends with Azoffs he and Azoff family are tight. other Artists don't have that favoritism or protection. I think Harry like his family friends the Azoffs only care about fame and money. There's a reason harry sold out shows when his bosses own the whole monopoly and can biasedly channel his career to the top echelons. He is a money making machine for them and harry is a willing and greedy participant. HE has been groomed by Azoff since 2013 when he was in secret talks with Azoff behind his 1D bandmates backs to go solo. Harry like his callous manager Azoff let Zayn take the fall for leaving fist for his mental health- the 1D fans directed vitriol and hate towards Zayn for "breaking up the band" when in reality Harry was planning to go solo all along. Azoffs no longer ceo of Ticketmaster or live nation yet they still have their hand in that pie. Recently they were mentioned in the Taylor swift Ticketmaster lawsuit.
