Canada Day is quickly approaching, and here on Vancouver Island, locals looking to join in on the celebrations have lots of options for where to go - from the South Island to the North. Yet this year's events come amid a new poll that suggests Canadians' sense of national pride is lower than it was a few years ago. Ethan Morneau has more.

If those aren't concerns for you, then you've been extremely sheltered. And immigration? I mean, come on. CTV reported that we brought in 435,000 in only three months. That's nearing two million per year. That's nearly 5% of our total population every single year. It's not sustainable. Doctors can only see so many patients. We're bringing in over 1.7 million per year while building under 300,000 homes. Closer to 200,000 but hey even if I'm being generous it's still very far off the immigration numbers. This is all on the cusp of AI taking millions of jobs. All on the cusp of robotics taking millions of jobs. We'll be left with million of relatively unskilled foreigners that don't share our cultural values, and there won't be work for any of them, or our youth coming out of school. We're walking into a complete disaster, and people such as yourself just dismiss it as American? You're very detached from the reality of the average Canadian. I'm on the brink of being homeless myself and I have a decent enough paying job. There's just no housing. My landlord is defaulting on his mortgage. He'll be forced to sell. The new owners will want to renovict me so they can get more for the unit. Etc etc. These issues are deeply concerning, not the fact that people are concerned about the deeply concerning issues.

I saw a beaver crossing a qew overpass today near Niagara. Reminded me for a moment of where I was. Then I saw the absolute mess below me on the highway and remembered our country was just given away by mediocre charlatan crooks. my rent is double what it was before Covid, I got 3 small items for 26 dollars at the grocery store earlier, there are luxury hotels in downtown Niagara Falls filled with fighting age males freeloading and being fed Ruth’s Chris 3 times a day. We are taxed over and over and over again by half strokes who think men can get pregnant. I haven’t had steady work in the oil field since 2015 and we can’t even use our own resources to benefit the needs of our own people. As evidenced by the disgusting price of fuel. This place is a joke.

How can I feel proud to be a Canadian when my own neighborhood is flooded with arabic signs, arabic bakeries, arabic restos, islamic centers, mosques, arabic people who dress as if they were in Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Algeria etc. they are changing the demography and so far, even if I tried, I was unable to befriend any of them. I cannot see the Canada I lived in 40 years ago when kids would play hockey on the sreets, when women felt safe walking on the streets at any given time of the day, when people connected because they spoke the same language and had the same values. I am surprised that our leader is not Chinese or an Arab refugge. I think if I want to feel like Im in Canada I will have to go to Newfoundland or the Yukon. What about the first nations? How come our government is not doing anything to help them out and put them first instead? After all they know and respect this land, their land, better than anybody else. I'm proud of what we were and could be again. Right now though, I'm angry. I'm angry that I'm 50 and despite working all my life, I can't afford a home. I can't afford a car. I can't afford a vacation. I waited 10 hours to see a doctor recently. I've been accosted 3 times in the last year while walking to work by drug addicts and other thugs shooting up heroin in the middle of the street downtown. Speaking of our cities and communities, they are crumbling. They reek of pot and piss, it's disgusting. Everyone and everything is just... shabby now. Run down. I have never been a 'proud Canadian,' whatever that means. I'm an immigrant from Northern Ireland 1966 brought here as a child without my consent. Certain aspects of Canada have been beneficial, such as having access to dental care (not government paid), but, at least, the recognition of the importance of teeth and dental care for overall heath. This was not a 'thing' in Ireland, so I'm glad I have 28 adult teeth, even though I should have 32 adult teeth. I had numerous extractions beginning in early childhood. Ireland is a land of sugar-laden everything. I miss the smell of the Irish Sea and many elements about the culture, except the sectarian violence.

I am proud of the people who built Canada, and I like many Canadians. I appreciate the stunning natural landscapes and general stability and prosperity of the country (though the latter are reduced due to decisions of the Liberal govt). I do not respect our current leadership, I hate the idea that Canada is simply a multicultural entity with no core values or core identity, and I do not support mass immigration. If things continue in the direction they are going, with increased censorship and attempts to jail or ruin those who express forbidden ideas, it may soon be an authoritarian nightmare.
