Congratulations on having the courage not to just move, but to move so far away - for being courageous to post and put yourself out there, and trying to help inspire others to find strength within themselves. Oh and trying to continually overcome feelings of not having enough - which these days in the USA is spreading very fast. :).
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
Thank you Brad for getting our intentions. My mom and I don't want to convince anyone to move here...or even leave the US. But if someone can see another way of living, it may set off a new idea for them on how they can adjust to the changes in their own situation. Stopping the downward spiral mindset is step 1. Like, for me and then Mom moving here for awhile.
@bradbrown3073Ай бұрын
@ I completely get your intentions. I am lucky from a lifetime of hard work and saving for the future - I have 3 small places I get to live - Ecuador - San Diego - and Hawaii - I can and do rotate between them - as best I can. I inspire my friends only on my FB Posts - pictures videos and writing of my experiences - constant difficulties and successes. My friends love to follow my adventures through my detailed descriptions of what I’m going through and thinking about. None of them will likely venture outside the USA / their town - city / or their homes. But they like to see the world thru my eyes and my perspectives. That’s why I liked your post - you are authentic - vulnerable - and willing to let people experience your life ….envisioning what that might be like for them. It’s all quite relatable. And you will grow your channel in your own time on your own terms. Maybe even even enough to make a bit of extra income from it. Can’t hurt to see if you can …if you want to. Just remember to stay vulnerable, and people will stay fiercely loyal to you and look forward to all your shares. That’s your contribution to the world. Becoming a beacon of light. Good luck to you and your mom !

Hi Debbie, I'm not desperate to leave the country, however, every time I talk with a woman they have a twinkle in their eyes about Bali...so I decided to go around my birthday next April. I'm truly excited. Already I moved from California to Ohio, and I've owned 3 homes, and gas only cost $2.57. However, to save even more and travel around Asia, appeals to me. Plus the delicious street food.

Hi Christine :) yes, some areas are flooded but we've had exceptionally wet season. It came early (October) when normally we don't see rain until late December. The weather today is sunny (loving it) at 86 F / 30 C with 80% humidity. Will most likely rain tonight. Our area where we live in Seminyak has had some flooding but nothing serious.

Before moving here I wished I kept more of my shorts and tee shirts. And as a woman I wished I had more cotton underwear. There is none here! I also wish I had brought the moisturizer I like. Because of my age my skin is more porous now and very dry! Also my favorite hair products. When things run out or wear out they can’t be replaced like the lotion or underwear. And because you are a man asking these questions what I said may not be resonate. As for what I’m glad I did before moving was donating my possessions. I feel good about that. In fact the organization I gave my things to I visited before moving. Right there was some of my things with price tags on them already! And it was only a few weeks before when I donated. That made me feel happy.

Do love listening to your video, and your Mum is a star 😊 Could you speak about the visa arrangement when a retirement Kitas is not an option ?
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
Yes, there are many stay visas (they just announced a new variety on Dec 17th). I've had 6 month visas and hear there are now 1 year non retirement visas. Once the visa is about to expire, you can renew. To be honest, I found the official visa immigration websites to be too confusing and recommend you connect with a visa agent. There are many you can find online and communicate through whatsapp. Go to one of the expat groups to get some recommendations of good visa agents. They can help with the management of obtaining the visa and extensions. Keep in mind if your visa is 6 months (180 days), they count your arrival day as day 1...and they charge a penalty for every day over the visa timeframe so stay ahead for the renewals when you can. The visa agent can help you too with this.

Thanks for the various answers! I thought one of the requirements for retiring there was hire / employ a maid or driver or handyman…did u hire? Mahalo- Edwin
@retiredlifeinBali15 күн бұрын
Hi Edwin, for the 6 years I've had visas and for the 2 years my mom has had a retirement visa, NOT once was I asked about or had to prove any staff. To be honest, many Aussies who have lived here are the ones that keep saying it's a thing, but I have asked them 'who is checking? who is asking you to prove?' My visa agent only requires my passport, and proof that I have $3k in a bank account. For Mom's retirement visa, she's had to provide her passport and proof of getting at least $2k per month income (different from my only having to show a total of $3k for my D12 visa) sent to her bank account.

Mom here! The weather is pretty consistent if you take into account being less than 500 south of the Equator! It’s hot! It’s humid! It can be relentless! Being near the beach helps sometimes. But at 1:00 pm on any given day the temperature could be 85-89 but factoring the humidity … really 105 or more. It cools down at night which helps. The temperature drops to around 78-80. I have air conditioning in my bedroom but that’s it. My living area and kitchen area is one room and have 2 exterior walls only. So it is open on two sides and closed on two sides which prevents me from getting an air conditioner. I would be cooling down the hot air of the outside world.

Do you need a sponsor to retire in Bali, and if so, can you recommend any? Also how is the bureaucracy? Like when you go to renew your visa, is it hard? Do you have to worry about how to take your money out of the country if you ever want to move somewhere else? Could you post on the differences in the expat communities - like are there less humid, cooler places, and also less crowded places? Thanks for your videos on moving to Bali - they are so informative!
@retiredlifeinBali2 ай бұрын
The visa agents are the sponsors. Not hard at all to renew the visa. Can't hide from bureaucracy...it follow you. But stay in your own lane (follow the rules) and you'll do fine. I keep enough money to live on here and the rest in the US. Further north is less humid...in the mountain areas like Ubud. If there was a full package, we'd be there. But you have to sacrifice something...no such thing as few crowds, good expats, less humid, cooler places. :)

Great information here - thank you. I would take your advice on a three weeks trip to three different places - could you be more specific with locations for a 68 year old lady alone - albiet very fit - or would any of those places you mention be suitable? Also, how bad is the rainy season - does it rain all day every day? I'm thinking of coming out in January. Lastly, I forsee I would stay for a few months every year from January through to April/May. Are there short term rentals available in these places?
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
Hello Gail, I would start with Sanur for your first destination. Don't book the other two until you arrive and see how it goes on where next. One of the other people in the community ended up in Lovina, which is up North. Very quiet, but very nice. Or Amed. January can get pretty rainy. I can't guarantee it won't rain every day. I think the best time to come is April/May or September/October. There should be short term stays but I don't know what you are looking for. Best to be here, then you can connect with a broker and go from there. :)

A great video, thanks. Can you tell us why did you choose Seminyak, rather than Canggu or Sanur for example? Also, do you get bored because in Bali you can't go to see a music concert (famous band) or a big sporting event or big cultural event from your own country. Do you miss these things?
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
To be honest, Canggu is too 'young' for me and I like Sanur but Seminyak always feels like home to me. I've been coming to Bali (before I moved here) since 2001 and Seminyak was my destination, every time. Yes, I do miss concerts and get jealous when my friends and family are posting their experiences there. But it's a small sacrifice for living happily without worries about anything. And I never get bored in Bali. It's unbelievable how much there is to do here. Every water sport you can think of including white water rafting. There's bicycling through the rice fields, hiking/trekking, local cultural experiences that are so beautiful. I used to be a big concert girl, not much a sports girl, although I don't mind a good day at Dodger Stadium, or Staples to watch the Lakers, but my tastes of what I want to do in my life now has changed dramatically.

Retirement visa, at 60 now I guess, requires you to employ a local full time, no? As in a driver, or housekeeper, or…

Mom has never had to prove hiring anyone in the 2 years she has had a retirement visa. You are not the first to mention this. Either way, she does have a maid.

SS gets sent to my moms american bank. My friend who is an American that's lived here for 20 years has her ss sent to her Indonesian bank. Personally, I would suggest it be sent to the american bank. Keep as much as you can in America and move only enough to live on for 6 months or a year.

What about bugs and little creatures getting in your house? Do they have pest control in Bali?
@retiredlifeinBali5 күн бұрын
Yes, there is pest control but there is always the next day when they come back. The bugs here are mainly mosquitos, termites, ants, flies.

Have you had a look into the BPJS? That's the Indonesian government health insurance. You can apply for it after 6 months on a KITAS. Last time I checked, it starts from around Rp150.000 (~AUD15) a month.
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
In order to qualify for the BPJS, you need to set up a bank account in Indonesia.

Just now starting to explore the Bali option. I appreciate what you’re putting together so far. You look great for your age and I love the mother and daughter approach. QUESTION do you know anything about the mountain cooler towns preferably with a non-active volcano. Any ideas would be helpful

Mountain areas (Ubud) are a little cooler and far enough away from the volcanos. Mt. Batur & Mt. Agung

Thanks for answering those questions. I would be interested in the video you mentioned. I am also wondering about volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, cyclones or hurricanes, etc. What is the cost of living there? Is the economy and politics stable in Bali? We have never been, but we would like to visit. We had never thought about retiring overseas until watching your video. We are in Australia so it's not that far I guess to come back to see children and grandchildren.
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
Hi, not this week but next week we will cover cost of living. The volcanos, Mt. Agung & Mt. Batur are located in North Bali. (they erupt but far away from where we live in south Bali. Floods happen, but not catastrophic. No cyclones, hurricanes or tsunamis...but earthquake jolts as Indonesia is within the Ring of Fire. Politics/Economy: Indonesia has become like Switzerland, in that they are allies with everyone. They are interested in prosperity for their country, therefore, don't want to rock any boats with other countries. I would say stable.

Love the video and your house is gorgeous!!! I sold all my stuff too and am moving to Bali next week! I hope it’s not too hot! Can you recommend an area that’s quiet, near the beach and without a lot of people?
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
Ah, for quiet, not a lot of people, look at Amed or Candi Dasa...stay far away from South Bali, where the majority of people visit.

Are there lots of insects? Other pests? I found your channel just now and look forward to watching the other videos. Thanks. I'm 72, live on S.S. and also, like tour mom, pay almost $1500 a month for my tiny condo apt. I'm in Texas where it's too hot to be outside 10 months out of the year.

You see many stray dogs and cats roam. People may have monkeys on a leash at the market stalls. Squirells run around the trees, and you can feed freely. I always use protection from insects, which are definitely around and noticeable but for the most part, no more than anywhere else in the world. 😊

did you bring your dog or buy one there? Is it hard to bring a pet from USA?
@retiredlifeinBaliАй бұрын
I rescued my dog from the beach (seriously after 10 minutes of being here). I've heard people bring their dog but honestly it's almost impossible (expensive, bureaucratic, risky) and wouldn't recommend it. There are so many dogs needing forever homes here, it's very sad. I am fostering another dog (which I keep saying fostering) but I'm really trying to find a home for her.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful information with us. I didn't see anyone ask about crime and safety, what is the crime rate and how safe is Bali?
@retiredlifeinBali2 ай бұрын
It's pretty low...most of the crime is either petty theft of foreigners doing things illegally. The government does their best to keep an eye for bad behavior and there's BIG consequences if you're caught. Also, no weapons here of any kind, and because the island is touristy. Last time I was in LA, I was actually concerned for my safety.

Wow you provided a lot of great info in a short video. I’m a recently retired Australian and love Bali. Life is pretty good here in Australia but I’d get a lot more bang for my buck in Bali. One of my concerns about living in Bali would be replicating the sense of community I have here. For example Im actively involved in my local tennis club which is great for socialising. Also go hiking, go out for dinner or go to cultural events regularly with friends etc. Is that easy to replicate in Bali?
@retiredlifeinBali2 ай бұрын
Ah, great idea for a video. Yes, there's community. By the way, have you heard of the Hash House Harriers? There's a Bali chapter. They meet every 2 weeks for a new hike. :)

Stay in Australia, your life sounds great and you have Medicare. Medical insurance is a killer cost moving to Bali.
@budawang772 ай бұрын
@@steveth1000 I guess one strategy would be to get basic evacuation insurance, pay out of pocket for non life threatening medical treatment and return to Australia for anything chronic requiring expensive treatment? Retiring overseas is also about the adventure and taking yourself out of your comfort zone etc, even if it comes with disadvantages.

I was a nomad all my life but the last 11 years have been accumulating stuff on two continents and it's going to be hard to live small again.

@retiredlifeinBali2 ай бұрын
If you hold over $10k outside the US, they US requires you to pay $250 a year. Look up FBAR (foreign bank account report) You have to report to the US you have a foreign bank account. EDITED ADDED INFO: I googled FBAR and found this: Who Must File the FBAR? A United States person that has a financial interest in or signature authority over foreign financial accounts must file an FBAR if the aggregate value of the foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.
