Thank you for your video. I watched your video with your mom. I'm your mom's age and retired at 78 from being a traveling social worker working in mental health with people in crisis. I loved my work. After I retired I traveled around the states for two years in an rv. I have become a minimalist and live in an rv park high in the mountains in New Mexico. While in college in my 40's and 50's I lived in Alaska for 16 years, 12 of those on a boat I bought. Now my world has shrunk and I'm faced with boredom. However, I have been at peace on my mountain. I have no debt and live comfortably off my social security. Stress has returned slowly due to our new politics so I am considering a possible relocation. I'm exploring different videos and am open to new cultures. I would appreciate learning what part of Bali you and your mom live in and if you really like the area. I will look for your upcoming videos, hopefully with your mom as partner. Thank you. Tam

We’re looking to retire in SE Asia and visiting for 43 days starting March. Vietnam and then likely Bali. Thailand was preferred on this trip but field burning cancelled that. Question I have is about Bali belly. Are you aware of this re street food and water. Have heard it’s worse in Bali than other places in the region. ?
@retiredlifeinBaliКүн бұрын
In the 6 years I've been here, haven't had Bali belly. I don't eat street food and eat from home a lot of the time. If you do get it there's something called Norit (charcoal) that helps a ton. Drink bottled water though and wash your hands when you can.

Thanks Debbie great video so you have to leave every year for a few days ? How much is the yearly visa ? You are lucky to have your mum & a friend out in Bail, if you don't know anyone how do you get out in the community & meet like wise people out there ? I'm very sociable here in WA Perth just wonder how i would meet others. Do they have yoga 🧘♂️ mornings or walking groups, dinner groups for people who retire in Bail ? 😊

Hi Jacqui ;) I'm on the D12, and I have to leave every 180 days for one day...but it's now a year visa. It's confusing I know but that's how they roll here. There are many expats to meet in the community groups and yes, there's yoga all over the place.

What a gorgeous home. I can't believe the owner paid for all of your renovations and then added that to the rent. That's fantastic. Can you stay longer if you want to?
@retiredlifeinBali4 күн бұрын
Hello, sorry if it sounds confusing. I paid the owner only the rent and then I paid for all of the renovations. Combing the cost of both in 10 years only costs $80k for the whole 10 years. But the caveat is that I have to pay the 10 years of rent up front and of course the renovation up front (which I used money from the sale of my home in Los Angeles). By the way, if I had rented a small apartment in the US (which is almost non existent these days) for $1500 a month, in 10 years, I'm would have paid 3 time more ($180,000). It's just like bulk shopping at Costco, but with rent. LOL.

I was there in the 70s so am a little shocked at all the plastic. Everything was natural on this little island. I noticed your vegetables were wrapped in banana leaves or something similar, but the grocery store has left me stunned. And sad. It’s amazing the locals have remained sweet and humble, although now they are wearing the global uniform: jeans and t-shirts. They used to be unique in the world.

I just discovered your channel and am loving it so far. The content of this video resonated with me, but I'd also like to offer a caveat. While there is a lot to be said for shaking things up by moving, etc., (and heaven knows I've done that enough myself), I would advise people to think long and hard on their reasons for wanting a life change. Sometimes, one can take their problems along for the ride, and after the newness and excitement of a move wears off, they find themselves right back where they started in terms of feeling disssatisfied. "Wherever you go, there you are," is a painfully true cliche. So, I'd caution folks against thinking that a change of scenery will solve all your problems. It may truly shake things up enough so that you get a new lease on life, but it's not a panacea for all that ails you. Moving can also be expensive and doing it repeatedly can put a real dent in one's budget. (I've learned that from experience.) My husband and I went from the US to Ecuador, and then to Bulgaria when Ecuador didn't work out for us. Having said all that, there are way too many people out there that lead lives of "quiet desperation" because they are too afraid or lethargic to make a move. You two are an inspiration in that regard and I bet you've motivated many people to get up off the couch and take action. 👍
@retiredlifeinBali5 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing this. You are absolutely correct, which is why I made the last video about 5 hard truths (I saw you commented on that one too). In this video, Mom shares we are not telling anyone to move to Bali, but at the very least 'get off the couch' (so well put). We are only speaking from our own experience and if someone else out there is feeling the same way, they can see there are alternatives to any situation. I wish you had a KZbin channel as I'm fascinated with your journey to Bulgaria. How is it living there if I may ask?
@ExpatJourneyOnline5 күн бұрын
@@retiredlifeinBali I'm working on the KZbin Channel and expect to see it go live within the next 3 months. Bulgaria has MANY similarities to your "5 Hard Truths" video.That's why it so resonated with me. We only just moved there in early December, and as fate would have it, I had to come back to the US for four weeks to have some eye surgery. So I left my husband and our cats in Plovdiv and now I'm sittin' in Denver, Colorado waiting for my eye to heal (it's on track) so I can fly back to Bulgaria and dive into life there. So, I'm not crazy experienced in Bulgarian life just yet. But so far, I'm liking what I see (and my husband is having a ball exploring his brains out while I'm over here!) So far, I find the expat community very diverse, Bulgarians very kind (not effusive like Americans, but always willing to help), the cost of living is crazy low and history is all over the place. I'm happy to be here visiting with family while I'm recovering, but I really can't wait to get back over there!
@retiredlifeinBali5 күн бұрын
@@ExpatJourneyOnline Amazing! If you are open to it, I would love to connect with you offline and share with you my journey of starting the KZbin videos, and maybe I can help. Only share my experience, of course, because there were a lot of lessons learned there too, and what I'm finding is that people who are following my mom and I are not just people interested in life in Bali, or retirement, or alternative living as an expat, or affordable living, it's the story of the person who is sharing it. It's you. It's me. It's my mom. Anyway, I can share more about this if you want to email me and we can set up a zoom call: [email protected]. Sending you expedient healing vibes. :)

Great video, one of the things that hit me the hardest when I moved to Bali was not being able to jump in the car and drive anywhere by myself. I had to rely on my husband to take me everywhere on the scooter because I felt nervous to drive the scooter by myself. I did step up in the end and learn to ride the scooter, but I always felt a bit scared!! Go jek and Grab are great, but it's better to have your own set of wheels!!
@retiredlifeinBali5 күн бұрын
You are sharing something exactly what my mom's biggest frustration is. She used to drive everywhere when she lived in the US and now she's at the mercy of getting a Go Jek car and can't just pull over when she wants to veer off course in another direction. Less freedom for sure when you are being driven to one destination and can't stop somewhere in between.
@anna_m593 күн бұрын
That’s my fear driving in Bali. I am in Bali as visitors for decades , but thinking permanently moving.
