I wouldn't say that if I were in a develloped country but I would say it in a non-develloped country. The reason in develloped countries, feelings are put forth. If we take politics out, feelings in social media are so much put in value. "I feel like..." "MY truth is..."...etc So if you are in a develloped country you should say: I'm naturally a classist type that's been born in a romantic enviroment. (If it is conflicting ideas) I am neither classist or romantic and I take many ideals from both sides. Classism put self-control on people and improve ethics and stability within a nation, including tolerance, respect and a "conquering soul" (meaning that it isn't fragile) but it is bad because it impowers authoritarianism and people would no longer think individually and would just acfept what society tells them and that I think is really bad. There is romantism which in opposition with classism, promotes individual thinking, and to tell thinking and feelings to others. In romatism,

Analogue Pixel Recall that there are five axes (Intuition/Analysis, Spontaneity/Education, Honesty/Politeness, Idealism/Realism, Rare/Everyday). Consider this: if you're an all-or-nothing Romantic you're 5/0; an all-or-nothing Classical would be 0/5. There are five different ways of being 4/1 and five different ways of being 1/4 (on per axis-on-the-other-side). That's 12 combinations so far. There are 2*2*2*2*2 = 32 combinations in total, meaning there are 32 - 12 = 20 ways of being the remaining two options, 2/3 and 3/2. If people fall only on the endpoints of each axis and do so on a 50/50 pattern, which is probably an unreasonable assumption, then the numbers alone would suggest that most people (20 vs. 12) are a mix, like you are. Review exercise: out of "a conflicted, torn mess" and my counting exercise, which is more Romantic and which is more Classical? ;-) (I'm Analysis+, Education+, Honesty, Realism, Everyday+, with a plus indicating a stronger leaning. Honesty sticks out as my one Romantic feature.)

because romantic music evokes feelings of a strength which we hardly feel in our day to day lives. that's why i love chopin or beethoven or rachmaninoff. they also contain the most intricate patterns, such as chopin's chord progressions and split chords/ arpeggio runs/ dim 7th runs, or his etudes which are all based strongly on scales and runs (favourites include winter wind and revolutionary)

+The School of Life “A revolution on a world scale will take a very long time. But it is also possible to recognize that it is already starting to happen. The easiest way to get our minds around it is to stop thinking about revolution as a thing - “the” revolution, the great cataclysmic break-and instead ask “what is revolutionary action?” We could then suggest: revolutionary action is any collective action which rejects, and therefore confronts, some form of power or domination and in doing so, reconstitutes social relations-even within the collectivity-in that light. Revolutionary action does not necessarily have to aim to topple governments. Attempts to create autonomous communities in the face of power (using Castoriadis’ definition here: ones that constitute themselves, collectively make their own rules or principles of operation, and continually reexamine them), would, for instance, be almost by definition revolutionary acts. And history shows us that the continual accumulation of such acts can change (almost) everything.” -David Graeber

Before watching the video, I predicted that I would be a Classical. But I turned out to be rather 50/50. I was born a Romantic, always living life so naturally that I never knew it was that way. My feelings were important to me and significantly helped shape my empathy and morals. But those are times that I hardly remember. As my unbiased mentality for self-criticism developed, I became a Classical. I cared much less about subjective matters. I wouldn't hesitate to criticize my own perspectives for what would be more realistic (0:49). So I abandoned the burden and weight of my emotions, and I chose to live a life of investment. I worked and worked, and worked and struggled... I've persevered, but I nearly killed myself in the process. It was because such a life was not fulfilling, the way I lived my life completely sucked the joy from the presence of my life... in return for promises of a "better future". From that experience, I've realized that living a life without feelings and emotions such as joy and fulfillment... was a detriment to my mental health. In the depths of depression... optimism, hope, faith and will-power were my most useful tools that would guide me out of that hole. And no, I wouldn't call it blind faith. For he who who says he can and he who says he can't are both usually right. Thus, I've re-developed my side of the Romantic. I believe that my actions should be genuine and convey what I truly feel. I will no longer drag my life with me as though my present being is meant to suffer for the sake of my future self. It is the Romantic side of me that will inspire me and push me towards new heights. While the Classical side of me will always be there to allow me to understand rationality and objectivity.

My friend idk why you don’t have more likes than everyone else. I’m going through a similar transition in life. I was born and raised a romantic but so many of my fears and anxiety stemmed out of classical theory. Since my father is a hardcore classical person I have bits engrained deep inside me of classical but I always fought it until recently when I realized and accepted that both romantic and classical are just theories. They both have good and bad and we as humans have the power to choose what to pick from each of it and what to ignore. That revelation of that power, although it feels and sounds obvious in retrospect, it is a game changer!!!

i honestly couldn't choose between both i learnt about romanticism and the classical era back in school and at the time i thought i more identified with romanticism. However now that i look back at it and even now i find myself caught in the middle, I'm a philosopher and historian i like to be realistic, optimistic and pessimistic at the same time i strive for idealism but am firmly grounded in the here and now. I accept if not cherish my inner child but cherish being nice, polite and reserved as well, I want adventure and to seek and explore the world at large but enjoy every day things and fret over what i have and weather or not i'm truly appreciating life, i know i will have many regrets in life but wish to live a life with no regrets. Yet i find myself conflicted because i fear contradictions and hate hypocrisy with a passion but also know it's contradictions that help us define and contrast life itself and all it has in store for us which leads me to find deeper meaning in life and in the same hand be realistic and tempered about it and all of this is to better myself and help me be more than just myself for i know it is the world around me and the people involved in our world and mine that define us develop us and give us purpose so really we're more than just ourselves, but we are eternally lonely and seperate from others which makes us different yet unique and special and yet seek to find someone who shares the same values as ourselves which is funny and sad all at once becuase it's as simple as being loved, accepted and understood yet it is others that allow us to do so let alone validate our own existence.... dammit i feel conflicted at times :P

1. Intuition vs. Analysis Marginally Classicist on this one Internally, I am highly self-critical of myself, and too often, to a self-destructive level. But I believe the best way we are going live our life is to understand it to its fullest. One of the few tools we have to make sense of what has happened and is happening is logic in my mind. Intellectuals' opinions should definitely matter because they have taken some time to think and reorganize in a comprehensive way what we are feeling. It is the one of the few ways to see the big picture. However there is a romantic tone to my view of intuition. Having vivid imaginations and dreams is the basis to analyze ourselves and who we are. Just thinking logically and analytically, in my mind, is a recipe of being unknown to yourself and discovering yourself on a deep level. 2. Spontaneity vs. Education I am mostly a Classicist on this one. I have a high value for education, even if I am really discontent with the current education systems. Although it is better for people at times to learn lessons on their own, we cannot figure out many of the world's complexity without help. The fact is the world is a confusing and often times a frightening place. We need education and skills to manage our own case of chaos in the world. Dismissing it to 'follow your heart' frustrates me because often times, I am even sure if people understand their own heart if they are not listening to anyone but what their emotions are telling them. It is not emotional purity, it is just too folly, 3. Frankness vs. Politeness I am almost completely Romantic on this one. It is weird that many people regard me as a polite person, because I go through much effort to be honest how I feel about almost everything. Regardless, politeness is an idea that has intrigued me and overtime, I have been slowly drifting towards. I have been more reserved about my opinions, I have often sugar-coded truths when I do not see myself as that kind of person. In that light, it is even more odd that the most respectable trait my friends find about me is I am honest about my emotions-- in a weird yet charming way. I make it no mystery what my interests are and what I believe. So, I would say I am kind/sensitive (?), but not necessarily polite. 4. Idealism vs. Realism I am strongly Romantic on this one. One of the most obvious things about my personality is I am an idealist. It do not take practically as the prime concern when it comes to society, but it has an important role. Idealism must be the foundation on how our society is behaved and organized and practically is useless in this department because this is a matter of perspective. Our ideals should be our endgoal and we, as a society, need to fight for those ideals. But if realism is not there as a cautioning voice for danger when we need it, our dreams for a better world will go horribly wrong. To clarify, I am a not a pragmatist (thus being romantically inclined on this section), it just means I believe that statistics and data do matter-- not solely ideas or emotions. Overall, I am more of a Romantic thinker than a Classical one. But I do have significant elements of Classical thought in my way of thinking.

Intuition and emotion can give you a quick answer and it CAN be right, but just because something is quick and it CAN be right does not make it so. Approaching life based on how you're "feeling" is a quick way to screw yourself over, it's why robots will outperform humans on singular tasks and specifically anything that requires deep thinking. Truth is truth and you can take many paths to get there, but the most consistent is critical/rational/objective thought.
@GrifMoNeY10 жыл бұрын
This is more or less true, and as a self-labeled rationalist I always push for more of the "classical" as depicted in the video. However, I will note that intuition suffices for more than 95% of day-to-day tasks, and our daily lives would be staggeringly difficult if we had to use System 2 mechanical thinking to decide, for example, what would be the optimal time to call a business contact to make sure he wasn't at lunch or in a meeting. In such a case, it will be difficult to recall what time he "normally" eats lunch, but as you're staring at the clock, your gut will have a better memory for that sort of thing and can tell you (in the form of a "bad feeling") that now might not be a good time.
@christopherstory322610 жыл бұрын
Truth is a romantic idea, but I'm game. Emotion permits us to cooperate in large enough numbers to rule the world. Emotion drives us to build robots that will be the end of us. Reason is no more than a means to our impulsive ends.

J :D As Borges said (though I prefer Poe's version) "The art of writing is mysterious; the opinions we hold are ephemeral, and I prefer the Platonic idea of the Muse to that of Poe, who reasoned, or feigned to reason, that the writing of a poem is an act of the intelligence. It never fails to amaze me that the classics hold a romantic theory of poetry, and a romantic poet a classical theory."

I think all we, who dream big and consider ourselves romantic, are too afraid to actually act in such a manner, because we also feel a lot more insecure, afraid and terrified, and worst of all, we let those feelings get the better of us. So, in a way, we comfort to what is ordinary and accepted, in order to contain that feeling of dread. I find myself feeling awkward, nauseous, anxious etc when I am confronted to make a choice, even though I truly believe in something deep inside, I fear that I might be wrong in said belief, and I've always questioned myself. I think doubt is presented in both romantic and classic personalities, in the first it is introverted and presented through sadness, deep emotions of sorrow, but through the classic viewpoint, it's just a reminder that nothing is sure, and that a balanced life is always better than falling to an extreme, a sort of a philosophical waypoint pleading to a more logical and thoughtful approach to life.

Konstantin Nikolaidis I know many go through life searching for happiness. I was the same when I was depressed. However I couldn't deal with that search, its a confusing chaotic state of mind. Easy to get distracted, mislead. Searching for happiness, hiding from pain and boredom. Not what I call living. You create a polarity within yourself, a conflict. All that stems from a fear of being nothing, apposed to being something. How do you receive this?

I believe that there was a bias from one's own office written into this video; in other words, the people/person involved in its creation believe(s) we live in a world favoring the romantic. ...and I believe severely that is not the case. Here are my 'arguments': -Judicial system -Police -Hourly wage -Formal attire -Business attire -Business Casual attire -Casual attire -STATUS ANXIETY (I lol'd a bit when I wrote this one down) -Spirituality with an absolute FOCUS on religion and not experience -I'll stop here for now I will not post here whether or not I believe I am a Romantic or a Classical. I will just post some (...what I consider) tacit and tautologous observations of the Western World from whence I've came.

+Facey Neck I agree with the bias. Society is VERY 'classical' that wants us to believe it's impulsive & creative. If people suddenly lived more Romantically, creative & open-minded like children, it wouldn't be society as we've known it. I also think some people are misinterpreting Romantic as 'crude' and Classical as 'evolved'.

+Facey Neck I'd say those things you mention certainly have been established by rather 'classical' thinking, however most of them were created a long time ago, and have been around since. I think the point that was made at the end of the video, which I fully agree with, is that the trend is more towards romantic thinking. Just compare the things you mentioned with how they were 50 years ago. Certainly a lot more strict and formal. Nowadays it's a lot more "hip" to criticize the government, the police or authority and rules in general, in fact I have the feeling that romantic thinking is currently accepted the most by society.

I'm mostly classical; I try and put aside my feelings for logic and find more happiness in coming home to some "boring" things. I have a jumpy schedule at work right now; and I find the schedule uncomfortable because it isn't routine, but it's a great job, I love it. But i do find I get boiled over people who get away with horrible things, and think high expectations for a bright future are the key to achieving something great. thanks for the video!

I'm somewhere in the middle of this. I believe rationality, truth and reality should be prioritized above feelings, but I still strive for an ideal world, love the rarity and uniqueness, love the feelings of love and happiness, and I feel like I'm more spontaneous than organised because while I still think that education and evidence is the better way to go, for most of the time in my life, I do things spontaneously rather than follow an everyday routine. I think my guide to life is what David Hume once said, which is "Be a philosopher, but amidst your philosophy, be still a man".

I'm apparently both. Sometimes I'm completely classical and some other times I'm completely romantic. I build myself up romantically and tear myself down classically more often than not. I think that, because of this, not even I can understand my train of thoughts. Sometimes I imagine a love at first sight scenario and enjoy it fully with outlandish details and after thinking it through again I criticize myself for being so unrealistic and blind to my emotions. My classmates feared me because of my constant facial expression, and then they'd talk to me and notice my caricatural smile conveying my complete devotion to the conversation. I've concluded I'm an awkward mess of both thought processes and that lends itself to a great and unpredictible experience in the future.

Ok, I'm done. Binge watched few videos, love the first ones, but now clear pattern emerges - these are quite subjective quite narrow elements of social science, made not to educate, but provide just enough information on the subject to draw in views and sell merchandise. And once you don't watch the video that distracts your brain with pretty images, only listening to actual words - then the lack of substance becomes so apparent it really starts to bother, it's just some guy telling his opinion about things, or stretching some simple fact like "People's insecurities could draw them into destructive relationships" to fill 3 to 6 minute video.. This useless list was the last straw. It doesn't put anything into perspective, it's just naming stuff, either you're that or that, and actually all people are both, and those sorts of position can change multiple times during life/year/month/or even day. It's not in the context of history of philosophy (which it should've been), directly applying romantic/classical labels to complex behaviors and positions of actual living humans is beyond simplistic. And it ends with dropping all pretense of objectivity and flat out producing an extraordinary claim that modern world is predominantly romantic, without any sort of explanation or reasoning. Why?? What country/province/city/demographic are you talking about? What is "spirit of the age" anyway, we vast differences between regions on pretty much every relevant statistic to this video, from education, to religion, to way of life, to goals in life, etc. We have whole countries moving concurrently towards hardcore atheism and hardcore religion. Even if you limit yourself to some 'default' country, which I guess is USA in this case, - NASA budget, the romantic one, is a pittance, while military, the classic one, dominates, yet religion (romantic) slowly wins over science (classical), etc. It's a very complex topic and this random unsubstantiated claim, used as a summary of the whole video, was ridiculous. This channel certainly has some production values and a smart-sounding British accent of the voice actor, but content-wise - looks more like a *BuzzFeed of social sciences* if you will, with not a lot bigger amount of real value. Guess I'll wait for CrashCourse philosophy instead. Too bad they already did a psychology course and it was more geared towards medical side than everyday one. Btw, thank you, dear reader, if you actually managed to get through this whole thing :)
