As an American that moved to Mexico, I have found it very easy to make friends. In fact, the first time someone asked me to stop by for dinner they apologized for only having pumpkin soup and quesadillas for dinner. I thought the soup was excellent. In about 3 months, I noticed that my name changed by all the people greeting me on the streets. Once I was just plain old Felipe, life got real nice.

We were looking for a more affordable place to retire. We looked at small towns in the US. But, we never found “the one”. Then we started thinking internationally and Mexico was the natural choice because we traveled there for vacations throughout our marriage. We weren’t resort rats, we had been to 4 different states in Mexico. There are countries that are cheaper than Mexico. But, we loved the Mexican culture and the beauty of the country. A person either “gets it” or they don’t. It’s definitely not for everyone. By the way, my husband is Italian and from Brooklyn. I didn’t know if he’d be able to slow down. Honestly, I thought it would be impossible. But, he’s absolutely loving it. Oh, and we were sick to death of US politics. Toxic environment. Lots of anger and not safe for kids. We’re old enough to know that might not change in our lifetime.

So far you are the only vlogger I've watched who addressed the high-school/cliqueish culture in "Expat enclaves". I encountered this during an exporatory trip to several recommended places for expats in Panama. Some towns were more notorious than others for being filled with gossips in sheeps clothing; one of them I experienced firsthand in the most popular town of Boquete - didn't realize it but I'd accidently gone with some other travelers to a place that is nicknamed "the KK cafe" where we were eavesdropped on then our conversation reported and distored in a facebook group. It was as childish as it was pathetic. Thank you for the honest drive arounds - makes me miss Mexico so much

Agreed. It is NOT for everyone. It's a huge adjustment. If you have never lived in a foreign country before and you can't speak Spanish and are not willing to immerse yourself in the culture, it's not for you. Forget about it just being a lower cost of living.... a lot of people cannot adjust. It's a revolving door for a lot of gringos with no experience living in latin america.

Thanks again for another clear breakdown of what ought to be basic, foundational facts, circumstances of what it takes to make a major life decisions & practical " street smarts", socio - economic considerations & LIFESTYLE CHOICES that are not necessarily obvious at first blush & perhaps taken for granted , perhaps people's entire lives until a major crisis(s) occur! Many make decisions due to crisis & therefore impulsively , out of desperation & not rationally, weighing all considerations. You lead folks make their own informed opinion so they can figure out where they stand in life & what things can and cannot be compromised & then find a middle ground or compromise that suits them! You continually offer an unbiased point of view that combine the " heart" factor as well as the cold shots (hot)😂 reality that people need to hear!

You are one of the few vloggers that is trying to paint a realistic picture of the hard truth about living in a different country. It is one thing to fantasize about living somewhere else or spending some of the year there, but to actually do it and last, is quite another. I have lived in Latin America for 9 years and I was well prepared for the change mostly because I was very diligent and realistic about what I was doing. The language is a huge hurdle that most people can not overcome. I knew a guy who moved from Georgia and after 3 years he told me he was tired of Spanish. Depending on the source, as many as 80% do not last 2 years on the high end and at least 50% on the low end. What I have noticed is anyone who can last 5 years will most likely stay. The best thing someone can do is come at least 3 times, at different times of the year, for different lengths of time, and try to live like the locals. If after a few trips, and serious study of the cons, then you will increase your odds of success.

The making friends thing is my only real concern. Not because I get lonely or anything, but more what the hell do I do if I slip in the tub and break my leg or have a stroke or something. I don't expect my sister to fly down and look after me. I guess that's kind of self centered to only want friends in case something happens to me but really that's just me. I have lots of friends here but they know what I'm like and they have their own lives to lead so we mostly just text each other and stuff. I don't hate people, I just like it better when they're not around.
@JoseArteagaTravels Жыл бұрын
You touch on very real concerns many people have. The beautiful thing about Mexico is that if you come out here and live with the people then you will soon see how many friends you just make by accident and who will actually care for you if something happens. I totally understand how that is a foreign concept for many people until they experience life out here. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.

I’ve enjoyed your video content and the variety that you cover relating to potential expats selecting Mexico as their new home. I currently reside in Washington Heights in NYC which is currently a more Dominican American community so I speak the language but I’ve also taken it in classroom settings earlier on in junior high and high school. I still have years ahead of me to work career wise, which is the main challenge of self sustainability in a move to Mexico. So far I am looking into Merida because of the content I’ve seen from various KZbin influencers on Merida and Rosarita/Tijuana as an alternative to Merida. Still am not in a place where I Can up and move because I need to see a few other things resolved in terms of career options to work remote, would be great if my current employer allowed me to work remote from Mexico since I have been working remote now for multiple years already. I was in Mexico city for 3 weeks a few months ago and the biggest issue I experienced was lack of Asian food and different Mexican food. As someone that grew up in LA I had Mexican food from every region and great Asian food of all types. Shortly after I got back home I ate a bowl of Pho and a torta ahogada and they were incredible. Definitely a first world problem but had to share my experience (: rest of my CDMX trip was great 😃

Hola Jose, Are there any cities that you can suggest for people with mobility issues and use a light-weight and easy-travel wheelchair? I am a Spanish and ESL teacher who lives in Florida and I want to move this family member with me in the near future. I lived in Spain and Costa Rica, and have been to Mexico several times and love it there, and I am not Latina but loved studying Spanish (majored in it in college) along with studying a few other languages. Thank you for any input from you or from others on here. Mil gracias!

Hi there! I honestly don't know many areas of Mexico that well. I know the streets and infrastructure are not the best in many places so I don't want to just take a shot in the dark. My suggestion to you is to go into the various expat groups in Mexico and asking those people who live in those areas for more detailed information. Sorry I couldn't be much help!

Dual citizen recently retired. Even I cannot live in my hometown in Mexico for extended periods of time. So I spend a few weeks there, travel to central Mexico cities that I always want to visit when I lived there 45 years ago and I return to the US for a few months. Get tired of the woke bs that’s going on with liberals and democrats and go back to Mexico. You are right in so many points you covered on this video. Only concern with Mexico is the lack of security in many areas of the country.

You can still find them. They are just in places most Americans do not want to live in. Take a look yourself in certain rural areas in the USA or in very dangerous neighborhoods in major US cities

For those moving to Mexico , bring someting , NO JUST MONEY , bring an open mind and ADD to the experience, do not take away from it because “I want to feel like in the US” we do not need that, the “American way of life “ contradicts with me Mexican way of life , do not try to change the culture or the traditions , that is what makes Mexico what it is , for that you can go somewhere else , the saying goes “ WHEN IN ROME , DO AS THE ROMANS “ ☝🏼

Yes, I am. I am 100% sure that I want to move down to México. Now that MORENA is getting rid of "la Mafia del poder" corruption and an industrial renaissance plus the infrastructure to make México independent in both the oil and energy industries, it makes sense to make a living in México. A lot of German companies are moving to Mexico due to inexpensive labor as well as stable energy prices. Thus, it makes sense to make a move. You should too

I moved to Mexico and I am back in the US. Jose is a good guy, everyone's is different and I feel like many videos you see on KZbin do not tell it like it is. Jose does a good job but at the same time I think there are more things that need to be said so folks make an educated decision and move knowing exactly what they are going to get. I am not trying to persuade anyone from moving to Mexico or not. That's not my problem or my business. I am telling you what my experience and my impression was. Before I move forward know that I am born and raise until i was 27 in a 3er world country worst that Mexico okay and I speak perfect Spanish. I am not a city boy, I was raised on the streets, drank from a hose, don't mind animals or insects at all. No stress? when i was at the house maybe, because driving in Merida is stressful, I drive a big pick up truck so I guess it was more stressful for me. Why? they drive terrible, they won't say anything to you - no road rage but they drive insane, no laws, lots streets have no white marking so locals can magically turn a a two lane street into 3 lanes and they will get in your lane on a two way road to pass cars lol, they won't slow down and even flash lights are you so you move near the sidewalk or emergency lane so they can pass. They will stop in the middle of the road for whatever reason not biggie..to pick up somebody or drop off something.. The streets are super small and the even the GPS will struggle to tell you exactly where you should go. The speed bumps on the streets most you can't even see them because they usually don't paint them an they are huge, be careful at night. They have a lot of roundabouts and it can get crazy. I drove in Miami, Boston, LA okay, not talking about traffic jams there is no congestion. I am talking about a bunch of people doing whatever the fuck they want with no rules written or unwritten ..Police? nope, they don't even behave when the cops are present. It is weird because YES they are very nice but they drive insane. Bureacracy is real, any paperwork will take a bunch of steps. Make sure the rental or airbnb you are going to have AC, not split unit but central AC, some would tell you won't need it but..BS you will. It is hot and humid and there is not that much of a breeze. Same with washer and dryer. Painting their house is not a priority, so you will see neighborhoods that look pretty bad and it is not because of the economy, that is just not that important for them, same with the weed, high grass is not something that bother them. Like the roads, they are in really bad shape, around the neighborhoods is like driving on the moon surface. Be careful with the food, some places have roaches or poor hygiene, wearing gloves is not a thing. Fast food for those with kids that at some point they will want to taste something familiar, it is not the same quality or taste. Saving? Rent is not the same but compare to US still low. Utility bills are low, cellphone bill too, buying a car is cheaper and car insurance too but food at the super market is same price, to save on food you will have to buy your food at different places and i am not sure if it is even worth it. Gas is expensive, more than US. Food in Mex restaurants is a little bit cheaper than US but not in Fast food restaurants which is same or more, for bad quality food. People from Merida are kind of shy but nice for the most part. They live paycheck to paycheck and you will too unless you have an income from US, or digital nomad..Not much to do in Merida, I wouldn't recommend it if you have kids. The Centro is okay, nothing crazy, I don't want to be rude but not like for example Cartagena, Ponce, Panama Viejo etc. The newer areas that people talk about are not that big of a difference, the malls are really nice and some shopping centers but that is about it. The nice area of Progresso is just a few blocks of a street right by the beach with a few restaurants, very small. The City of Progresso is in really ..really bad shape. You do what you think is best for you and your family. Just don't make the same mistake I made, of not going first for a couple of months, to explore before making the decision. Instead I went by the videos and youtube channels, that with all due respect think about this: if you are watching youtube videos of Venus because you want to move there, would you watch my channel more than once if i tell it sucks don't come..? I just hate to see people that get all hype up watching videos and people telling how great it is. I respect everyone's opinion but I feel like the whole truth is not being being told by youtubers. US is not perfect, and I agree it is getting worse with the new agenda and corrupt politicians..but hey, if I call 911 rescue or police they will be there for me asap. I go to an emergency room at night and I have no worries. I had to go to the emergency room in Merida one day and it was just not even close guys. Let's be real, this is not about being soft, or going to Mexico like thinking that you are still in the US..I knew Mexico was not like the US but to be honest I never imagine it was that bad or behind..not just that but many things make no sense AT ALL. Maybe if it was only me, I would have adapted and fuck it but when you go with a Family is not all about you. So good luck, I went driving and returned driving so feel free to ask any questions, keep in mind i won't tell you what you want to hear, i'll tell you my opinion base on my experience.. maybe other people have different opinions and experiences.

Thank you so much for sharing! You add so much more context to the things I am saying. Most of the things you do not like, are the main reasons I love Merida and Mexico in general. I really appreciate you adding this comment because it does represent a lot of people who think just like you. I myself living in anarchy and think many things are more quaint and cute than a nuisance. But hey like you said we are all different and what is paradise to me is hell to you and vice versa. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts they are greatly appreciated!

Yes, I can handle the truth. I lived through it in Mexico State "Tlanepantla de Baz, Edo. De México" it was rough; however, it will get much better now that MORENA through the new governor, Delfina Gómez takes office "the governor's house". Imagine: México State with minimum or no corruption "it takes time to get rid of corruption". Thus, most citizens down there and throughout México will be able to develop the country to its maximum potential. Plus "The Bucareli Treaty will be over very soon" thus México will be able to produce and develop it's different industries to their full potential. Keep in mind that México was producing rockets in the 60's and has its own aero-espacial "The equivalent of NASA in the US" which was funded on 7/31/2010.
