The only reason why people seem smarter is because they put in the time and effort it takes to learn whatever it is they are doing. Some people need to put in more time and effort than others.

Honestly I wonder this a lot. It’s easy to doubt yourself when you get bad grades in school for subjects that are related to your field, but at the end of the day it’s your passion that will get you through. I don’t test well (test anxiety yay) and have about a B- average (O-chem rip me), but that will never stop me from becoming a Marine Biologist, and it shouldn’t stop anyone else either!

marine biologist has been my childhood dream career (I've had a strong interest and connection to sharks since I could remember), however I always felt like the dumb kid in class. I'm about to start my marine bio goal in college with the help of a friend and this really helped motivate me that I can do it. Thank you! c:

Thank you for the reassurance! I am currently in the process of applying for grad school in marine programs & this has often been a reoccurring concern of mine. But as you said, I have found that being a scientist requires true passion, curiosity & hard work rather than being a natural born genius.

Haha....or the reason scientist seem "smart" is b/c professors try to cram a lot of information in their minds when they were in school on repeat! 😅😆 But seriously, if you are passionate about the subject (any subject), then you will want to go above and beyond in that field or career path then people would naturally call you "smart" on that even though you know that they could most likely can do that too!

Great point about the definition of smartness, that's also why some companies prefer to hire PhDs. It's due to their ability to provide innovative ideas and work independently. I would add a few more points specifically from a Marine scientist stand point. First, is the willingness to move countries for positions because opportunities are often rare and require relocation. Second, is being able to work with multinational multidisciplinary teams. Third and perhaps the most crucial is to be able to preservere for a long time with the possibility of unemployment gaps even after a PhD. Jobs are rare in marine science in general, I have learned to cherish one day at a time, and see marine science research as a training of a science journey and not the a limiting career option.

I have a friend, my best friend actually, who had a really successful career and now he's 41 years old and wants to change his career and study marine biology by going back to college and getting a new degree. He does not have a family of his own and I encouraged him to do it while keeping his full-time job in the process. Any advice for him at all about this move? I just keep offering my support and positive encouragement. I don't know what else to do. This would be changing careers entirely. He is currently in finance.

I have just enrolled onto a bsc marine biology course although I have done slightly different to most as I'm already a lab technician so have the work experience before starting my degree and going back to education at 26. Erica Lesolame Hi Erica. I think so. I think the longer you are in the field the more you need to have these skills. And if you don’t have them, you might not enjoy it that much. But in my (maybe naive) opinion I think everyone deep down is curious. It’s just a matter of finding what stirs your curiosity the most. The other things will come together the more passionate you are about your work ;)

Since the beginning of the high school I wanted to be a scientist. My life wasn't easy and I ended up moving abroad. Need a few years for me to save money and had to sit on a two year course then the moment came and I enrolled into a science university course. Then everything started to fell apart. I was 27 and everyone else maximum 20. I lived in a rented flat so I didn't have the student accomodation for be more social. Each lesson was mixed with different people from different course so even if I met someone I didn't see the person for the next week. The auditorums were all underground, no sunlings, no proper ventillation. So the lack of oxygen made everyone sleepy. The professors didn't like question exept when it was a genius question which happened like one a month. I stated to feel really alone and my motivation started to decline. We had to do a presentation in a group of 4. The other three was living in the same student flat so became friends quickly. On our group meeting they didn't want to discuss about the project only planning the upcoming party. So we agreed that each of us will do independent reseach and then put together. But when this time came the person in charge from the group didn't include my work as "no place left on the poster" but everyone had to talk so I ended up reading some bit from someone else work which I wasn't familiar. The result came a couple of week later that the group did well except speaker 4 aka me. We didn't get grades but still hurted me. I felt really stupid. I lost my passion. I had all the skills mentioned in the video and then it went blank. I started to have panic attack and sometimes I could't stay for the whole lesson as I felt so miserable. I finished the year but barely remember anything which is just soo bad. So I had to make the hardest decision of my life and I did. I ended up transfering into a new course. I don't think I'm stupid just I didn't have the right environment.

I'm just entering my 2nd year and not going to lie I'm kinda discouraged and doubtful bc my 1st year went horribly due to covid. I failed all my classes which left me doubtful. It's my dream tho and this video reassured me to keep pursuing that dream. Thank you☺️

Dear Maria, thank you so much for this video. I am a student who is in foundation year for Marine biology and as you have probably already guessed it has been a long term interest of mine! This video has been of particular help to me as I suffer from dyspraxia and even this year I've had professors ask me if I have a brain etc. I find in myself honestly a lack of curiosity in the classical scientific sense but I would love Godwilling to one day be involved in something high up conservation related as I have always cared about marine life health and preservation, all the best with your own journey!

I’m a senior in high school he wishes to major in philosophy of Science, my girlfriend wishes to major in Marina Biology she’s what brought me to your Channel. One thing I think that scientists at least in general from what I’ve seen seriously lacking are training in logic, epistemology and philosophy, which is a shame because philosophy is the heart of Science, without philosophy, in fact for the longest time up until around the 20th century they were seen as one field you didn’t have one without the other. And you see a lot of very intelligent people adopt very just nonsensical positions like scientism include the most basic logical and philosophical errors, take Lawrence Krauss the universe from nothing for instants.

Ah, dont let that stop you. Work hard in math, work hard at all school. Dont let your dreams be crushed! But also try to have reasonable expectations, (I know it's hard) math and science go hand in hand very often so if you want one you might need the other. Keep working at it, it will get better. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that all your dreams are able to come true.❤

Now at 21 I’m going to upgrade HS classes and chase my dreams and hopefully go to university and go in marine bio or oceanography and I’m so excited no matter how hard it’ll be!!!🥰💙

I have been working on and off on my degree for years now. First, I was terrified of student loans. Paying class by class. I have always been a biology/science major. I want to specialize in ecology and conservation. I am only in my associate degree, finally committed to student loans to get my degree faster - then the pandemic hit. My classes went great online at first, but I had a lot of trouble with the online system at school. I was nervous I would have problems again, paying for a class, and they may blame me. I don’t want to waste money, and I want to pass classes. I’m afraid to start classes again now, but I’m committed to going back. Any time I think or even interview for another career, even after I give up, I can’t be happy without this degree. I’ll figure out if I’m good at it later on, but I have to try and go back. Hope someone can relate! Take care and don’t give up on your goals.

The notion of stupidity / intelligence is weird to me, since it is a description of how fast one can learn something new. But having a good foundation of knowledge before learning something new, makes learning easier / faster. Also, there are people who process a lot more information than most people do when learning something new. Those people are not less intelligent though they might use a longer time to learn something new since they want to learn everything about something. One can speak to an extroverted person, who is really good at talking and presenting themselves as knowledgeable in certain subjects, though they may lack depth in their understanding, and one can speak to an introvert who has incredible depth of knowledge, but are not percieved as intelligent due to them being less good at talking. As for being a scientist, I think it is more about how much work you put in, to achieve the goal of becoming a scientist. Curiosity is of course a great motivation for putting in that work. Also, I would think having a flexible mind, in regards to ones existing knowledge, is paramount, since what one hold as true one day, may become untrue with greater understanding of a subject, or when something is disproven. I think this flexibility of mind shold be trained for in schools as well. Because then we might not have as much climate-deniers and others who reject information that science has discovered so far.

Texas A&M at Galveston is a university that specializes in marine sciences and related fields. It's connected to the main Texas A&M University completely except for the fact it is a satellite school. If you want small class sizes with good professors it's a great place to go as there is only around 3k students. Also mentioning it is on the water, so some of your labs are on boats, which is super cool.
