I know I’m not the first to say this but I think this is a timely reminder to put more consideration into putter choice as it’s the club we use most. I’ve been guilty of spending $600 to $700 Aus on a driver when most of the time I’ll only hit it 9 times in a round. Makes far more sense to invest in the very best putter you can afford but more importantly “the putter that suits your style”. Enjoying your videos and your style of presentation - keep them coming 👍🏻

One other big thing to consider when using the parallel lines to test is make sure your putting on a flat surface so you know that its your strike and not the uneven ground causing the ball to roll out one way or another.

I found a shop that does putter fittings, for $75 he measured my stroke and face angle etc. switched me from the mallet I had to a blade, and shortened the shaft. Completely eliminated 4 putts and 3 putts are rare. Crazy how such a small change can drop 5-6 strokes of my handicap

I got a putting fitting at a Club Champion recently. It was very informative. I learned that my back stroke was a severe arc and then I was compensating coming forward and was hitting the putt with an open face. He recommended a face balanced putter and the one I used improved my stroke dramatically. I've traded two old putters for another one online. I'm waiting for my new putter.

I game a Taylormade Mullen 2 with the black copper finish. It’s between a blade and a mallet. I added a Fatso 5.0 (yes it’s too big for a LOT of people but I have big hands) and my putting game has really come alive. The insert took some getting used to but I’ve figured it out and can put the right pace on it almost every time. For me, the mallet putters have to much “tail weight” and tend to push the putter face open or closed. And the blade style putter tends to be too light and I don’t get a good feel for pace. Everyone’s different tho and that’s why there’s so many styles!

My putter is a center line shaft Cleveland Huntington Beach model. My practice balls are two colored. one half one color the other half another, so you can get a nice true spinning looking roll. These work really well for chipping too if you turn it the other way, you can really see the backspin.

I have 18 putters mostly mallet, selected for their looks. Favorite is an odyssey Sabertooth, but I putt well with all because I use a straight back and forward stroke, most of the time with one hand and sometimes on one foot if I want to amaze. Use of 2 hands doubles your chance of error. Also make sure the putter is flat on the ground and the toe not tipped up, as the loft of the face can cause a drift to the left. Good tips from SG!😊

You should have mentioned how important it is to hit the center of the putter at impact. Missing the center can influence the direction and distance of your putt. The 3 things that are paramount in putting; 1. Hitting the center of the putter. 2. The Path of the putter 3. A Square face at impact.

Interesting! I found a putting tip video saying that if you want to make the ball roll right away instead of it skidding the first few inches before it rolls is you set up probably an inch max from your ball so that you hit the ball on the upswing of the putter. Having said this, I still have all 5 that I've bought over the years.(including one left handed) I change my putter every other round. They are all slightly different: blade, mallet, hybrid style, completely different grips...but all center shafted. In doing this I get the new putter feel with better mechanics. In truth I would prefer to putt lefty, since I'm right eye dominate, I see the undulation better when standing over the ball. But I haven't gotten my stroke quite as smooth yet.

All good stuff. Clearly getting the face on the ball square at impact is the most important thing. Getting there involves some factors you didn’t go into: length of putter, lie angle, grip type/size. All of these impact your ability to get the face square at impact. For instance, if the shaft is too long, that will generally bring the toe off the ground (bad lie angle) and can create an optical illusion putting the face off line. Also another factor is loft. You can get it on line, but if the loft is wrong, the ball may not have a tight roll (bounce or hop). The lie needs to match you stroke.

I built 7 putters to find the one that goes into the bag. I saw a huge variance in weight, balance, and even face material. It's always a personal choice, like any other club, but it's the most important club in the bag. Spending time figuring out which style, weight, LENGTH ( many putters are too short for the 6' player), and face type is best for your liking, is the only way to get it as close to right as possible. You cannot, in my mind, try a club for 1hour, and make a scientific decision. BTW, total investment in 7 clubs is less than 1 name brand putter, so money is not an issue in doing this... afterwards I'm selling the 5 that didn't make the cut...you do well in advising spending time on greens ,learning to putt.. it's where the most strokes are lost. Does my heart good seeing that platoon of putters !!

Really my best putter is a 3 iron followed by a pitching wedge followed by sand wedge. The recommend clubs to use a putter that are not a putter are all you drivers the 1,3 and 5 wood then 1 and 3 irons and the pitching wedge some people are able to use other irons as well. Modern sets 1,3 and 5 woods and 3 iron or 3 hybrid and pitching wedge so you have effect at least 5 putters in your bag that are not putters. The reality here is if you are going to take part in competition you should really doing some putting practice with the clubs in the set that are not putters but can be used as putters so you know what you backup putter is. Remember in competition you start round with 14 max clubs and if any club fails breaks.... in the round you cannot replace it in competition until at least end of round. Remember if you put in 2 putters to have a spare putter you are giving up something else. You can in fact learn a lot about your putting by in fact using the other clubs to put with. Yes using the other clubs in your set can be a quick way to see hang I am using my putter wrong because you are magically doing better using the non putters. Or in my case I have never found a putter that suites me better than most 3 irons. The clubs in the set that can be used as putters that are not putters in should perform worse than using a perfectly matched putter for you if that is not the case the putter does not suite you. Yes advantage this gives putters to compare you putter to without buying more putters. Yes people talk about speed of green problem you have seen some pro golfers in history intentionally break their putter play on with one non putter options. Think about it you have at least 5 different weight putters hiding in your normal clubs if you know how to use them. This is something I find annoying video after video about what is the best putter none of them cover the fact you can use your normal clubs and yes it legal to use the woods and irons to putt and by the rules you are not required to have a putter in a competition set. Question I have is how many people are buying putters who are like me that items in standard clubs suit better? The issues that all putters are designed to fix not everyone has and this is why a putter makes my game worse. This is failure of the question of are you using the wrong putter? Should you be using club design as a putter or should you just be using one of the woods/irons/wedge instead? this is a question that is not normal asked. There is a time frame in history where putter did not exist as a club at all. So what is the wrong putter is a lot bigger question. The setup and test method you demo is the same setup and test you should do with your normal woods/irons/wedges as well as your putter to see what item you putt best with it can be very surprising. Remember even if you are going to buy a putter knowing what wood/iron/wedges you can use effectively as a putter means a game of golf is not ruined because something goes wrong with your putter or your putter is wrong one for the current conditions(more choice).

Thanks for posting another great video! I’ve been using a Ping Anser 2 for over 25 years. I’ve been struggling with it all season. When I first line up, it looks like the face is closed. I open the face slightly, then miss on the right edge. On the next putt, I’ll line up the same way as before, but not open the face. Then I miss on the left edge. Has anyone else had that problem? I’m thinking about switching to a mallet that has more of an alignment aid.

Tim, don’t ever give up on that putter. Just got mine re-gripped for the 4th time. Remember that putting is the only shot in golf with imperfect feedback. Perfectly struck putts can not go in and poorly struck putts sometimes go in due to imperfections in the greens. Just keep rolling the putts over your target blade of grass 12 inches in front of the ball and you’ll see better outcomes soon.

Still using a 30 year old ping Anser! Just updated the grip to a Super Stoke oversize with added weight in the end. I'm telling you it's you and not your putter!

Very helpful. I was hitting left with my toe don ping answer w titanium pixels...and straight with my Odyssey two ball space up I hit it straighter. Distance control seems better with Ping but seemed to hit short more with Odyssey. I can work on that. Thanks.

I set up left foot forward perpendicular to the line. Line putter up to that. Can't get off unless I misread the putt.

Great video..but you didn't use a mallet. Is there a chart that shows you all the different putters that would work for toe out or toe in ?

Matt I make all my putts on the practice green go figure. I play a odyssey copper two ball love the putter. So I have stroke issues not putter issues. Mmm there seems to be a pattern here with my driver, irons, and wedges.😂😂. Love ya brother, be safe.

in 50 yrs of playing the right putter is the one that you trust, the one that feels the best for you. doesnt matter blade or mallet. l have tried them all and always go back to my first one. 1966 Ping Anser putter.

My putter is a bright red rubber putter that I stole from a mini golf course like 2 years ago. Best putter there is. Don't need some $200 piece of aluminum in my bag.
