Great video, Peter & Co! I struggled with pace control with every mallet design I tried. The day I tried an Anser style putter is the day I realized you don't have to be a plus handicap player to use a blade. My Taylormade TP Hydrablast Soto feels great, looks really nice, and my pace control with it is amazing! Try any putter that you think you might like, and you may surprise yourself as I did!

I researched a lot of putters that are forgiving and affordable as well. I ended up purchasing an Odyssey Stroke Lab Exo 2 Ball. The stats from testing as far as pace on heel and toe strikes (on James Robinsons channel) were impressive. I also liked the alignment of the 2 ball and am excited to use it this upcoming year. I got it in a 35” length and the chunky stock odyssey grip. It’s a sexy beast.

The Wilson putter you showed first is actually a sort of replica of the famous "8802" from 1964. Made popular by Wilson after Arnold Palmer parted with the company. However, Wilson continued to produce the blade in several iterations for decades after. Originally called "Designed by Arnold Palmer", Wilson gave the putter the stock number 8802 and this became its brand. The brand is 8802 (number) and not BB02 as you called it. JMTC

For many years I used a Counterbalance Top Flight putter I got for I think $40 at DSG and I absolutely LOVED it. Just about the only reason Ive moved on was I became a big Cobra fan and they came out with the 3D Printed putters, my day job centers around 3D Printing so it was a really hard to ignore release for me, and yes I have since gotten a set of the irons. But maybe more notably to the some of the points of the video, I actually armlock to my trail arm because its just more comfortable for me and while I think Ive always been a solid putter I probably have been putting my best with it. Using the trail arm might keep me from losing power too?

The grip is heavy enough to counterbalance the heavy Miura head, and tbh I didn't know a putter could feel this nice. Great stuff! When I got my putter (cobra cuda vintage) my fitter told me that one of the most important things about picking a putter is the looks. You can find putters that behave the same but the club you look at the most is the putter and if you feel something is off about how it looks its a no go.
@Reffitt2
@Reffitt2 7 ай бұрын
I agree. I also think it's true of any club in your bag, but as you said, your putter is the only club you use on every hole. Looking down at any club that you don't like automatically puts doubt in your mind, and your brain will try to create any outcome or thought you have, good or bad. Golf is truly all about confidence.

I started last year with a PLD Anser 2, and I bought it because it was beautiful. However, I was absolutely terrible with it. A few months later I bought a Phantom X12, and wow, the improvement was immediate. It doesn’t look nearly as elegant in my eyes, but the forgiveness, distance control, and ease of alignment were a huge step up. I can certainly see why people wouldn’t want to play something that looks like the LAB, but I’d imagine it resists twists on off center hits like the Phantom X12 does. I considered the AI One (the largest mallet version), and it was great. It was the latest and greatest at the time. However, the X12 was just a bit better for me, and was really noticeable when I’d go back to the AI One. Regardless, going forward, I’ll definitely take putter buying more seriously so I don’t have barely used $450 putters gathering dust in my closet.

So my son and I have been doing this test for several months down at the local Golf Galaxy. And like you he has really locked his putter down to a Odyssey also. Really been very good at rolling the rock with the triple hot putters, but they have been so high. And of course he wanted to see if the new AI would allow him to putt even better. What he and I did not like about the new AI was the face being sooo hot. The long putts were still great while the short putts seemed to be hard to hit. The previous years triple hot was already reactive but the AI face has carried it to another level. So he put the AI against the triple hot. And well the triple hot and he just get along better. Not to mention the $100 price drop for the Triple Hot. It was a no brainer for us. Probably already shaved 2 or three off his round with the triple hot!!!

Don't remember exactly when I got it new, but I still use a 1985ish Ping Zing 2. I have tried every conceivable model, style and brand over the decades, including original and newer Zings, and nothing feels or works better. It is perfectly balanced, the right weight, and has felt great with old and newer golf balls. I have always used a two-piece ball due to spin control. Everything from 80s Top Flite XL to the current Supersoft, but even with old tour balatas, and newer urethane balls, this putter just works.

Karsten Solheim solved this question decades ago with his Anser. Hands down the best and most effective putter design of all time. That said, while I have several Ansers in my collection, I have a Scotty Cameron Newport in the bag, just another interpretation of Karsten’s revolutionary design.

I find the neck and toe hang is the most important factor for me. I can’t putt NEARLY as well with gooseneck putters that are face balanced.. I find that the head shape is less important for me. But I guess I do prefer a blade or at most a half moon. I do much better with the classic Anser offset “plumber” neck or those low-profile “slant or flow” necks.

I have seen a newer design of a blade Mallet being very popular and a Blade with an Answer style head. Also, some more lineup Answer heads have 3 lines on them where 2 outer lines are for ends of inner blade oval as a response to smaller mallet style having alignment aids in help for lining up shots better in best hit area. Also, you forgot 2 head design often made by very cheap bands or as in case of Wilson and a few others as a part of a cheaper end beginner set.

1:12 The data back this up. Some people are golf sociopaths, some language :) Great video.

Biggest problem I have is I cannot use a peoper stroke because most of the greens I play on are grainy, bumpy, and slow. When I practice on better greens, I am able to do a proper stroke. All other times, I have to "hit" the ball just to get it to the hole. Courses need dedicated greenskeepers.

Have you ever tried the carbite putters? I’ve loved them and had one in my bag most of my adult life amazing putters that nobody knows about.

It is interesting that you find that centre shafted putters feel as though they twist more. Looking at the physics, the total twisting moment on a centre shaft putter should be a fraction of that on the side shafted putter. But what would be different is that the twisting moment on an off centre hit for a side shafted putter would be very consistent between on centre and off centre hits. Your brain and hands would be used to the feeling and have compensations built into the swing. But on a centre shafted putted the delta in the twisting moment would be the same, but the net torsion would vary between positive and negative depending on the strike position. That would give quite a difference in feel.

I’d like to see you test the new line of Toulon putters. Same shapes, less branding, more refined

Although I absolutely hate the look of it, I might need to try a lab, or the other forgiving options.....

What’s your advice regarding weight of putter ? …. My friends comment that my Rife Raider is heavy , compared to their putters , Odyssey or Taylormade. I quite liked the feel of it but now quite conscious it is heavy
