One year after my husband's near fatal heart attack we went from mostly plant based to fully plant based. My husband told his cardiologist about the new lifestyle and the doctor said, "Nothing but good can come from eating that way". So here we are, in our low 60's now, healthier than ever and yes, 12 months after going vegan, my mild case of arterial disease has been "cleaned up"! Side note: On future podcasts, could you balance your sound a little? Chuck's voice was much louder than Dr Barnard's and I was constantly adjusting my volume. Thanks!

My CIMT came back "no plaque burden" and my arterial age was younger than my actual age. He was so happy for me! I've been plant strong since 2010 by the way.

and meanwhile, you will lose your hair and your blood protein will decrease because plant and nut protein are incomplete. everyone feels "better" initially when switching, then they go back because people discover they are amongst many who cannot live without meat. you will lose the ability to digest meat and dairy, you will lose all the enzymes to digest these and you will spend years or months fixing your body, which will result in post-prandial hypotension and requiring exercising to strengthen your digestive system back again.

Two months ago my doctor said I had high cholesterol and was pre-diabetic it threw me for a loop when she told me I was pre-diabetic I've never been diagnosed with that before and I was embarrassed but I refuse to go on drugs for something that I knew could be reversed with diet and exercise so I said to her before you reach for you Rx pad give me a little over a month to work on it with change of diet and then do my blood work again, I go get blood work done again on June 9, 2021 and I see the doctor again on the 16th, I've lost 10lbs so far and I'm super anxious to see what my cholesterol and glucose levels are since I've spent the past several weeks eating completely vegan, and running on my treadmill and lifting weights. I hope to have dropped another 10lbs by the time I see the doc on the 16th wish me luck ;) Btw, I too have hereditary high cholesterol and in my past experience when I use to workout and eat healthy the cardio I was doing brought it down to normal levels, I'll come back and let you know what my readings are this time the before and after that is.

I switched to a high fat keto diet and now my HDL is 60 and my triglycerides are 74. My blood pressure actually came down as well. The Mayo Clinic did a 16 year study that showed TRG:HDL ratio was the best predictor of heart disease regardless of LDL. I think different genetics benefit from different diets. Please expect it to take some time to dump the extra cholesterol into you blood so your body can process it and remove it from your body. Expect it to go even higher for at least 6 month’s especially if you body has been storing it in your muscles and the walls of your arteries. I was caring for someone and the levels went over 1700 but as we got rid of the fatty liver we came down to 169 but I asked for a statin for some temporary help. Diet 3 cups veggies in am , 3 cups fruit 5-6 hrs later and air popped popped corn with out any butter or other oils and it came down in a couple of months. Basically I let them “pig out” on veggies at one meal so they weren’t hunger and them the same with the fruit meal. There were 2 to 3 different kinds at the 1st 2 meals and then a no sugar starch with no oils and a touch of salt if wanted but we live in a hot place and you need a bit of salt and you need some for making hydrochloric acid. The bowl was a salad serving bowl so it was a large serving of low calorie food to fill you up. Hope this helps. Give our self 6-12 months to make real progress, be patient especially if you have been using vegetable and seed oils and I would think dairy too

Nutrition is so complicated. Famous cardiac surgeon Dr Gundry says one reason to eat food is to get quality olive oil in your system and he suggests ingesting it with everything. He also lists many veggies not to eat because of lectins. Beans are a no unless they are pressure cooked. His patients are successful in their blood work and tests following theses guidelines just like every other doctor who promotes their advice. How will we ever know what is really correct. I don’t think ordinary blood panels at a yearly exam tell the whole story. More comprehensive blood testing is probably a good place to start Right now I just stay away from sugar; bad oils, highly processed foods, white flour. It’s a journey 🤟

@unholyquail4560
@unholyquail4560 3 жыл бұрын
When your "ratio's are off" that means even though you are on the optimal 180 (acording to the American Heart Association) you might have alot more LDL and a lot less HDL than optimal. This is why only taking in account the total does not tell you the entire story. And you need to look at the optimal LDL for health as well. Where the amount should be less than 100 mg/dl for optimal health outcomes. Now since your ratio's are off this might indicat that you LDL is actually above that line and your HDL is lower. This means that even though your total cholestrol is on the mark the LDL is still in the levels of being a risk factor. So lowering your LDL would still be a proper precaution to prevent risk of disease.

Some people, and I am one of them, have a condition in which their cholesterol is higher than normal despite diet. That being said a number of 180 for total cholesterol is not dangerous. It certainly does not warrant a statin. There are many foods which vegans have on occasion which does contain fat such as Lentil soup, by Progresso and they do put some oil in their products. Lentil soup is easy to make from scratch, however and then you do not have to add oil at all. Read the labels and select the lowest fat alternative. If you eat vegan burgers for convenience as my husband and I do, Boca Burgers are extremely low in fat. If it is suggested that you pan fry a product, see if you can use water instead or I have found that my Cuisinart Griddler is very good at frying without any fat. It does best with a little soy sauce or one can use vegetable broth. I was worried about too much soy, now I quit worrying and am enjoying tofu which I have fat-free in the Cuisinart Griddler and sprinkle it the chicken seasoning , vegetable seasoning and a bit of Canadian Steak seasoning. All of those are fat-free and meat-free. This tastes good to me and I can get more in my system as soy is also known to reduce cholesterol. Hope it works for you as it worked for me.

Thanks for our replies. Yes, my “good” cholesterol was very low and the “bad” was way too high. But it’s actually down from before. My doctor doesn’t know that because I just started with a new doctor because of insurance change. I do want to continue this way of eating for a while and see if the numbers get better before I start on any drugs. It was also the first time that the doctor didn’t try to put me on blood pressure medicine. It’s always high. Especially in the doctor’s office. This time it was in a good range. The bottom number was in the 70’s and that was a first. It’s usually in the 80’s range. Sometimes into the 90s. I don’t add any oils to my cooking anymore.

Coconut oil doesn't end up being a carcinogen like all other cooking oils, and it is largely MCT, which we can breakdown much easier than other long chain oils.

@fdghn4567
@fdghn4567 Жыл бұрын
@@happycook6737 Bit confused by your reply, which edible oils are just pooling on the ground ready to be scooped up and used? Most cooking oils are grain and seed based and we have only been cultivating grain crops for around 10,000 years, the method of oil extraction is very harsh compared to cold pressing oils like coconut and olive. Saturated fats are not a problem depending on what your body burns for fuel. Like I said before coconut oil is largely MCT, which our bodies can break down far more easily than most other oils. Having found out I have Peripheral arterial disease I stopped using vegetable oils grains and sugars, started eating low carb and within 3 weeks of cutting those out I stopped getting pain in my leg which was severe, I stopped getting numbness after about 5 weeks, my body burns fat for fuel so I use coconut oil and olive oil, I use real butter and whole milk, I also eat a lot of unprocessed meat and leafy greens, my health has improved a lot. Arteries get clogged because they are inflammed, making the body utilize cholesterol calcium and triglycerides as a sticking plaster to protect the arteries from further damage. statins interupt the body's process of protecting without addressing the cause of the inflammation and depletes our Co Q10 which we produce less of as we age and is essential to maintaining good health. The best indicator as to whether you are due a heart attack is not cholesterol levels, it's levels of calcification in the arteries which can be checked with a CAC test, Statin's are not going to make any difference to that. Do some research on oils and you will find coconut oil has the longest shelf life, has health benefits, doesn't chemically change and produce carcinogens like other oils, nations that use coconut oil as an everyday oil don't have anywhere near the rate of western diseases. My health is improvimg from what I am now consuming along with D3 and K2-MK7 supplements, I am also using the controversial EDTA Chelation method for removing arterial calcium build up along with heavy metals.

Does juggling count for exercise. I have moved from juggling solely balls to juggling clubs as well. They require more tracking through your brains because you have to deal with rotation as well as placement. That's why I am learning it. I heard the more difficult something is the better it is for your brain. Juggling helps your brain and response speed. I was pulling a cup out of the cupboard and another cup fell out. My left hand jumped to the rescue and caught it. I think juggling helped save that coffee cup. I have thought about purchasing 3 weighted balls to juggle with for heavier exercise. I am whole food plant based vegan. Have been for 9 years now and still the weight I was in high school. I am now 50 and learning to juggle clubs. LOL. My wife thinks I am nuts.

I’ve also read that Fleur de Sel has more natural iodine than any other salt, so if you were to use salt (I use it in whole wheat or bean pasta water), then should use Fleur de Sel, which is from Ile de Re, France. I ate lots of butter, egg yolks, fatty pork belly, and beef fat on a low carbohydrate diet for many years. When I was 26, I started having pain in my chest, jaw, arm, shoulder, and back. Now I am 28 and the pain is becoming more frequent and worse. I recently started to go on a low fat, low cholesterol diet to hopefully stop the progression of what is most definitely plaque buildup in my heart. I went on a low carbohydrate diet many years ago to treat acne that would not go away even with a starch based oil free plant based diet. It turns out that I have the APOE4 allele and sterol hyperabsorption, which makes me very sensitive to saturated fats. But at the same time, I have glucose intolerance even on a low fat diet. What should I do if I cannot tolerate a high carbohydrate diet, even from whole plant foods?
@jim5jim5jim5

You say "most definitely plaque buildup". How have you confirmed this? Many (not all) people on low carb diets have zero coronary calcium scores (correlates with minimal plaque). Have you had a Coronary Artery Calcium Score? (CACS). Non-invasive, no discomfort, gold standard for evaluating existence and extent of coronary arterial plaque, usually quite affordable. I would appreciate your response. Thank you.
