Brillant, Ben! Thank you so much! So valuable! Would love to get more content regarding injury prevention, prehab, etc...please!!!

Even with boots a very wide footstrap setting makes sense. Look at Steven van Broeckhoven, he always wears boots and sets his footstraps very wide to avoid a broken foot bone.

Question Ben! When you jump, do you lift your toes or press down with them into the board. How do you lock your feet for them to not come out of the straps?

I injured my foot foiling twisting my front foot e few month ago, it was extremely painful but lis franc was not broken so I was Lucky. I will adjust my straps after watching this. Very greatful for this video👍👍👍

Hi Ben, I watched the clip 4 months too late. I slipped with one foot out of the rear strap during a jump, and guess what: Lisfranc fracture. Now I randomly came across your clip - better late than never. Guys, take this tip seriously. 6 months off is no fun. Thanks a lot 👍 Michael

Sorry to hear mate.. it’s a common injury for windsurfers! I think I need to do a lisfranc video

Probably one of the most contentious subjects in windsurfing...... oh and boom height, harness length, seat or waist, harness line position, foot strap position, fin size, multi or single, board size, batten count, down haul/out haul tension...... you probably see where this is going. And don't forget it has to have the latest colour scheme and cost twice as much as it did last year. And anything that is more than 6 months old is obviously crap and only a dinosaur would use it. I love windsurfing. ❤❤

Way back in 1998 I broke my right foot because I had the straps too loose! I suffered a tibula/fibula fracture right above the ankle, plus a dislocated ankle joint. Required surgery, 7 screw, metal plate and Six months recovery. My foot straps were too loose and I did not realize my foot was inserted up to my ankle in the straps. I blew a jump going fast. The nose of the board dropped hitting the water and instantly twisting 180 backwards. My foot got torqued backwards in the strap. I heard the bones snap!!! Lesson learned don't open your straps big enough to allow full foot insertion up to ankle!!!

That sounds nasty mate!!! But as I said... ‘that’s how I set my straps up.. ‘ But no matter how you have your straps... some landing/impacts/ waves you can be unlucky. Do you think if you’d had your straps different you have been ok?
@chuckr33983 жыл бұрын
I have often thought that if I would have had the front straps a little tighter where my foot had not been inserted so deeply that it might have had a better chance of being pulled out of the strap. However, it also happened so quickly, less than a second, that perhaps no matter how loose or tight the straps were, it would not have made a difference. Interestingly there was a guy who produced a releasable foot strap back around 99-2000 called the "Foot Saver". They actually worked pretty well I thought as I had a couple pairs which did release when you got thrown hard against the straps. Unfortunately he evidently sold the rights to them to Chinook and as far as I know they never produced them further.

Great tip. Might be good to show how to use foot straps for foiling, racing and slalom riding.

That would be awesome!

You should check out the pwa riders setup videos on this channel they have info on all the gear
Foiling adds danger for the feet as if the foil is immerged then the board won't tilt to the side if you try to put your knee on the opposite rail... This is what this video shows (english subtitles available). A gust pushes me down and then into the sail. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIuUmGOth89qnMU

Thank you Thank you Thank you 🙏🙏🙏 I have bad knees from the factory and I fear using the footstraps as I'm worried my foot will get stuck and twist my knee. This was the first video that showed a setting that really looks safe for me! Maybe I'm gonna have cold toes for a while as the water is still quite cool here 😁

Good tip. Great explanation on the why. Decade too late for this old dolt. Tore the right MCL when the back foot ejected, but the front stayed too attached. At least I'm now "balanced". Tore the left MCL a few years earlier. Have the foil board straps set up "wave" style. Just "mowing the Lawn" foiling, but I get crash. A lot.

Good to know, heading out for first wave sail in uk soon (hopefully). Sounds like great advise. Thanks :)

Boa dica

had broken exactly the bone, Ben is talking about, last summer. my advice is to make footstraps very-very narrow and tall ( in this way u can rotate your foot inside easily )
@sflasurf3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what kind of sailing. Very different between wave sailing, racing and foiling.

I got the same tip from freestylers, your foot needs space to rotate to prevent foot injury.

Thanks Ben, it is cristal clear! From that video, it seems that you are tuning both the front straps (jump and surf) the same way, right? Still, do you have the same tuning for Hookipa and Pozo please?

Last year my friend asked me why I have such a big foot straps. Gave him a same explanation in order to avoid injury, and he adjusted his foot straps. I went out, 10 minutes in broke my ankle. Fuc* me sideways :(
@WindsurfingTV3 жыл бұрын
Yes.. like I said ‘This is NOT advise’ but it’s what I do.. everyone needs to make their own mind up. But chances are you would have broken it anyway.. also the problem is.. most people make them bigger. But not big enough.. as they feel bigger than they were and yes that can be worse.

You could additionally point out that the straps should fit close to the sides of the feet. It is common for people to have a small but too wide foot strap.

Sadly the SimmerStyle footstraps are a pain in the ass to adjust the outer shell neoprene 🤨
@WindsurfingTV3 жыл бұрын
Really? Mine are easy.. easier wet though
@vectorphaseshifter3 жыл бұрын
Well, the neoprene outer shell has no inside velcro that can fix the one end to the strap, while pulling the other end of the wrap to get it tight around the strap. Wished Simmer made the same system as the J-P straps! But most important, the 97 Helix is a fine tool for the Dutch Northsea coast area 👍 Keep up the good work Ben and enjoy your airtime!
@WindsurfingTV3 жыл бұрын
@@vectorphaseshifter yep.. they are like the dakine straps. Best thing to do is the corner first. Then work your way along.. but i see what you mean. 😁

I would say the opposite....I thought too loose straps would impede the foot to come off....and consequently...crack!! I barely see the end of my toes coming out.... but I don't wave sail...
@WindsurfingTV3 жыл бұрын
Yep.. this is how I (and nearly all the riders on the World Cup) set my foot straps for wave sailing. You can’t wave ride with just your toes in the straps. As you need to get your weight over the board. It would be like wave sailing in high heels. You have to put a lot of pressure through the board to drive a turn. So sailing on your toes would make for a unstable board through the turns. Also when you hit the wave there is a good chance the board would not stay on your feet. You want contact with the board but if it goes wrong you need you feet to come out.
@Jurjensz3 жыл бұрын
I have them set to narrow and i have broken the exact bone Ben is talking about last summer... I have put them a little looser but still tight tbh. Cant imagine to go slalom surfing with loose straps 🤣
