It's pathetic now. I actually like Zoe Sugg, she seems like a nice person, but she definitely exploits her fans with the money she charges for things and the way she only really gets properly active on KZbin if she has something to sell. I can't stand Alfie anymore, I was a fan of his once but his obnoxious bragging over how much he spends on phones and cars and then says "Guys, I can't afford to pay for an event without charging you, I can't afford the security to a meet and greet, that's why you buy a ticket" is lousy. I mean, I'm a book nerd and I've been to so many book signings from authors and I've never had to pay for it, I can't believe this new trend of paying to have someone sign your book. The point is that the people there bought your book and came out of their way to tell you they like you. People now want paying to promote their own books and have their egos inflated by loyal fans. It's terrible. Didnt they do Amnesty fest or something a few years ago? They won't go to SITC where so many of their fans go and it's all because of money. They want paying for their time while they sit in their mansions vlogging their "hauls" to make money from the views when they're not doing anything content worthy. "I bought some jeans, I'm gonna video it and make the money back for them from you" It truly is sad. I've had a lot of problems with Alfie, he's wasteful, obnoxious and talks down to fans as if they should obey his orders on how they speak to him when he's pissed them off.

Emily Moorey If they're willing to allow their name on things and take the profits, they have a say. When Boots said to Zoe that it was going to be £50 she could have done a number of things such as refusing to allow them to put it up for sale or she could have told her fans she felt it was overpriced. Instead she sat awaiting for the money to roll in from her fans who can barely afford her merch while she and her boyfriend flash a new iPhone every couple of months. Most flexing couple on KZbin.

I don't think you deserve to receive any abuse for this video, you made very valid points. I have no problem with KZbinrs attending an event but I'm uneasy about the idea of people being paid to meet viewers, essentially the people who made their careers in the first place.Nice to see someone exposing how commercial it has all become.
@therealtrendingpage67657 жыл бұрын
Laurbubble youtuber meet viewers for free all the time so are you gonna ignore all those other times and focus on them being paid for the small amount of times they do. KZbinr are being paid to attend the event. why not?
@PinkDiamond77777777 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura. I like your videos. I think this expands to the whole entertainment industry. Went to Comic Con that week-end. Wanted to talk to an actor (too poor for an auto after £18 entry that allready ouch broke the bank) and was told by a crew member "We're not doing that right now. Maybe if you come back towards the end." He told me to go back around 16h30 (Con ended at 17h00). I only got there at 42 past, sad times but all actors in that area had left early. I was so disappointed. The queue was really short, so it wasn't in the interest of trying to get as many people to meet him as possible. It was just a case of "You're not handing money over, so you're not priority," which is the current Con culture. I don't blame the actors for leaving early. I've worked cons before. I know how tiring it can be, especially doing more than one day, as he very kindly did. I just wish I hadn't been turned away beforehand, just because I didn't have £30 or however much it was for his auto and wanted to meet him. It sends the message "We care more about your money than letting you meet actors". It's just not grand and it's a great shame, 'cause these events are actually really fun. You say viewers are the people who make KZbinrs' careers possible in the first place. Likewise, if these actors didn't have such strong fanbases, it could influence casting decisions. Goodness knows how many films won't get funded if they haven't got a well-known cast on it. Ah, 'tis a sad affair, but hopefully a learning curve for the industry on how to improve from here.
@laura7 жыл бұрын
Hey @PinkDiamond7777777 I'm so happy to hear you like my videos :) Thank you. I agree, its sad to hear something like this but like you said, I hope the industry will learn and improve from this. I don't blame the actors or youtubers as I know how exhausting these conventions can be, I just wish the system would become less commercial and change a bit. Sorry to hear about your comic con experience.
@laura7 жыл бұрын
I don't blame any of the youtubers personally. Of course if someone offers money, its going to be tempting to take it and I can't find fault with that. However I do disagree with the system and how it seemed to take advantage by charging extortionate prices to young fans, run by someone who seemed to want to make a quick buck with no experience in the youtube world. Compare this to Tom who runs sitc (like Jack mentioned in the video) and you can see why people are annoyed.

Anyone here remember back in the day when the most famous youtuber was charlieissocoollike and he was famous for just being a normal kid sat on the floor in his school uniform counting wine gums for a laugh? I understand when Celebrities/KZbinrs say no to pictures WHEN they are out and about. But when attending an EVENT and saying no to pictures is completely ridiculous, fans are paying to see you there the least you could do is take a selfie. I mean isn't the sole purpose of an event to interact with fans? When going out to eat, it is not your job to take pictures with fans, because you are just grabbing a meal so it's understandable to say no. That's why people hold events, they are FOR the fans how hard is it to quickly smile for a photo damn.

@TwelvetreeZ5 жыл бұрын
I suspect it's partly a need to fund a lavish lifestyle, and partly everyone who works for them (and is dependent on Zoe and Alfie being successful so they can continue to pay them) encouraging them to push products, do events, keep making videos, etc

you make a lot of valid points and I totally agree with you. It's rare that you find KZbinr's these days that don't exploit their fans, take Dan and Phil for example; for both of their live shows the tickets were relatively cheap (cheapest being around £27). Sure the VIP tickets were expensive (£100) but you get to meet them, get something signed, take a couple pictures and front row seats. Whereas at something like Hello World, a standard ticket is about £100 and you're not even certain to meet the youtubers you came to see. It's so ridiculous and it just shows who really cares about their fans and not the money to an extent
@august14517 жыл бұрын
I don't really see those KZbinrs as KZbinrs anymore. They seem more like Jimmy Kimmel's channel and that type of thing - corporations on KZbin. They don't even try to seem like real people anymore, it's all performed in a condescending tone, vlogs like "hey, look at my £5,000,000 house, look at my cute dog, look at my perfect relationship, look at my £200 worth of clothes I bought in one sitting". I like what you said about people like Dodie, because while she is technically a Big KZbinr™ she's still a person and makes that clear. She makes professional sponsored videos, but also makes videos when she's in the depths of depression/depersonalisation, she makes smiley Q&As, but she also makes videos of her just living her life, like making pasta, or planting herbs. It's Dodie, and people like Dodie (another example might be Thomas Sanders), that have made it really big on this platform, but haven't gone entirely corporate. They're all quite genuine and amicable, but they don't sell you this false, fabricated image of themselves being "just like your internet best friend!". On the other hand, the more corporate people are false and patronising, while simultaneously leading fans (who are often very young and easily manipulated) to believe they're practically friends, and that they "love" them, which is simply not true. Fortunately, I feel like the rest of KZbin has kind of disowned them now, though. Nobody really talks about them, everyone just kind of leaves them to do their thing. They're not really part of the "group" anymore.

I volunteered in VidCon Australia and I would like to extend on your point about Dodie here. I want people to know that there are actually KZbinrs out there who are geninue and deserves admiration. KZbinrs who go to events like Vidcon don’t get paid for it (they did for Hello World), they are there completely for the fans. We volunteers work on a 2-3 hour shift base. When I got there the volunteer I was taking over told me how that MatPat was already there for 2 hours, which was his designated meet and greet time, but he only got over half of the line. Instead of just snapping a photo and sending the fan away. He would hug them, comfort them if they are crying / hyperventilating, ask their name, ask what posts they want for their photos, he would post with them for a few photos, some photos include him picking up or piggy-backing the fans (very tiring if you have to do that for 2 hours), accept their gifts, sign whatever they want him to autograph on, and then have a small conversation to see what kind of content they enjoy and what they want to see more in the future. And then only send them off when they are completely content. At the end he spent 3.5 hours there which was almost double the amount of time he needed to be there. For the whole 3.5 hours he was so nice and humble with his fans, and he was so energetic and didn't show any hint of tiredness. Imagine doing that for 3 to 4 hours, I was just cutting wristbands and I felt tired for him. I am not a gamer so I don't really watch his video but I feel like I have became a fan just seeing how nice he had been with these excited teenage girls and little boys who are seeing him. There were also fans waiting outside the barricaded area who probably didn't get the wrist band to see him, he saw that he decided to take a few selfies with them (which he defintely didn't have to) after the 4 hour long meet-and-greet. He did get mobbed and had to be pulled out of the crowd by a staff later. I've also heard stories from other volunteers of him just showing up and sitting down in the audience in some panels as if he thought no one would recognise him. And apparently when he was registering, he was like "Um... hey, my name is Matthew Patrick...?" As if he wasn't sure if they would know who he is. It's the way that he didn't take himself so seriously or think he is such a big deal that makes him an actually relatable KZbinr. Instead of walking away thinking "I hope he liked/noticed me", like a lot of young fans feel towards their favourite KZbinrs, you think "I like him even more now". Dodie was in the next line so I don't know the details but she went over even more, I think she was there for at least 5 hours and only sped things up at the end because she had to go to the mainstage for a performance straight after. From where I was working I saw her having private interactions with fans and would stop and acknolwedges fans ouside of the meet-and-greet hall calling her name. You can see the difference there where some creators care more about their fans. Those who always say “I love you guys, I would have never be where I am without you.” Are those who think fans should pay £100 just to see them standing on a literal pedestal from far away. And those who don’t throw the “love” word around are the actually people who do appreciate and love their fans. Action speak much louder than words.

Nail on the fuckin' head. I wasn't necessarily angry, I was upset. I'm a 25 year-old woman; I wasn't arsed about meeting people or getting selfies really, I just wanted a little bit of what I've enjoyed online for many years (many years longer than the naïve children who will defend them no matter what) in a unique way. I'm hurt that my perceptions were obviously so fuckin' off. I saw Alfie turn away those little girls and I couldn't get it off my mind; they were crestfallen and it's likely that that was their only chance, after spending all their pocket money on his merch and being hyped up for weeks. It might not have been a conventional meet and greet, but the "activities" were at best lacklustre, and worst, non-existent. I came home sad thinking that one of my hobbies had been ruined . . . then I discovered your channel and restored my faith a little. Thank you for that. 😊
@bookmilla86167 жыл бұрын
The kids rooting for them aren’t naïve, they’re just children. When millions of 12 year old teenage girls are told daily by their idol how much they’re loved ect, they get so brainwashed that they believe everything they say. You can’t really blame them considering they aren’t mature enough to realise that most of the KZbinrs are just doing it for money

It's really obvious they are using their 'fans' by how much they charge for their mundane products. It's always WAY more than regular stores, and the quality is dreadful. Zoe's products are made in China and they feel it too. She sits in her multi million pound house, after paying a lot of money to prevent the media revealing just how much it cost, laughing at the fact she's minted and her fans are completely SKINT. I've never seen her give back to her fans. It's all about her. If I had made multi-millions of my fans, you bet I would do a FREE fucking event where you guys could come and I'd chat and have a good time with you all. You could meet my dog, family, friends, whoever wanted to come. I'd do Q&A, sing, whatever they want. It wouldn't cost a bloody penny. It would take me what, an afternoon? a few hours? There's be giveaways, a celebration. I fricken hate these youtubers who are so damn selfish. They receive endless love and money, and they hate their fans. you can tell. But are these KZbinrs any different from mainstream artists with all of their pricey concert tickets and huge amount of expensive merchandise? Most of those don't meet and greet their fans, so in my opinion, they are no different. Exploitation is everywhere. The majority of businesses on this planet are based on some sort of exploitation to some extent. But the entertainment industry is particularly bad in my view as far as that goes.

At one point of the live show, we spent 5 minutes being told if we didn't go on instagram and send a certain youtubers instagram post to 5k likes in 5 mins, the Vamps won't be coming on stage, that was their whole slot. The full 5 mins of 'entertainment' was watching a like counter slowly tick up on a big screen. Looking around during most of the event kids looked bored, parents looked angry. Such a shame, it had such great potential, just needed more thought and better execution.

I love how transparent you are. That's one of the differences. I think we all understand that KZbin has shifted from sitting in your bedroom filming with your friends as a hobby to a full time job for many and that's totally fine! Just be transparent about it and don't pretend that you do it for other reasons if it's clear that you don't. If you're selling a 50 pound advent calendar that is actually worth 20 you're not doing it as a hobby anymore or if you're selling 99 pound tickets for a meet and greet which is almost equivalent to a big name concert ticket (cheapest ticket) it's not really 'relatable' or out of caring for your fans. Also don't pretend that you care about your fans if you're clearly just chasing the money and not even caring to ensure those that put you in the position that you are in get the most affordable and rewarding experience. Chase the money that's fine but at least put the effort in or care to reward your fans for their support. Maybe do a free meet and greet once in a while instead of always seemingly exploiting your fans.....

Mentioning Dodie brought a smile to my face. I've been lucky enough to see her both times she's toured the U.S., and although she couldn't stay the second time (the venue wouldn't let her) the first time I went to see her we were there until midnight. Why? Because she, Jon, Tessa and Rusty stayed--until they met every single person who came to the concert. There was no meet and greet promised, I brought my ukulele in the desperate hope that I could *maybe* meet them. But I got to have a full conversation with all of them--took a picture, had them sign my instrument. They did this with everyone. Granted it was a small venue, but that's still meeting over two hundred people after performing for hours. THAT is what gratitude looks like, and that's what someone's attitude should be towards their fans. You don't owe them details about your personal life, you don't owe them your privacy. But you do owe them gratitude and respect. I understand that really huge musicians and celebrities can't meet every person at their concerts and events, just because there's too many of them. But in the case of these youtubers--especially the ones who are literally promising to meet their fans--there is no excuse. They should take a page out of the books of those wonderful musicians I met and remember why they're so famous to begin with.

Brad Griffins the big youtubers are based at manipulating and taking teens/tweens money as indicated by the brands they’ve created with books/beauty lines. There’s not gonna be ‘little little children’ buying zoella’s bath bombs or Tanya’s makeup; they are aimed at tweens who idolise them and their lifestyle. I was volunteering in VidCon Australia and I can assure you that she is such a sweet and genuine person who deserves your admiration. She was in the meet and greet hall for 4 or 5 hours, but she was only expected to be there for 2 hours. VidCon controls the amount of people allowed into the meet and greet hall, and the reason she went over was because she was having very personal interaction with each and every one of her fans who came to see her, when all that was expected from her was to hug the fan, take a selfie and send them away. She would also stop from time to time to acknowledge fans from outside the meet and greet hall who didn't get the wristband to see her. Really if she wasn't rushing to perform in the main show she may have left even later.

This is why I have been a Dan and Phill fan for years and forever will love them, i missed the meet and greet but made it to the show and a member of staff heard this and managed to tell Dam and Phill. I was taken backstage 10 minutes before they were to go onstage and they signed my books took photos and had a nice conversation with me and said it was okay when I said sorry for disturbing them before the show. They are so down to earth and love their fans. Jack is so right to come out and call out the KZbin who don't care about fans the way they should, and not manipulate children x

I watch zoella occasionally and this has really changed my view on her.. I found her really almost aggressive when she was pushing hello world. Like 'if you don't come you will miss out.' 'You will only see this if you come.' I think she's a good person but I think they money has got too their heads. I think her and Alfie don't really have a grasp on reality now. Alfie just bought a forest... but why? What's the point? I would love them too address this hello world thing. But I don't think they will. I'm really disappointed in them as humans haha. Really liked this video, you have got 1 new subscriber! Make that pay check 330.01 or whatever haha

Issie and Mike I'd totally buy a forest if I had that kind of money. An undisturbed place for long walks, mushroom hunting, and in their case, video making. Especially with wild nature being slowly depleted, I think that was a good buy. Better than *another* rental property!

Lyra Madrona yeah I guess, I suppose I never thought about it! I guess if you have their level of money why not haha still random

Issie and Mike oh for sure gone to their heads. That advent calendar thing? wow.
@laurenc1647 жыл бұрын
Lyra Madrona I understand what you mean but you don't need to buy a forest to have quiet forest walk and so on. I'd rather find a quiet forest for free because there are lots you know.

KZbinrs do decide for the price of there stuff and if u think they don't ur brain dead... Zoella is a scammer. Her Advent calender cost less then 10p to make on China.. She decided to mark it up to 50p when the company that promoted told her specifically to not charge more then 25p..shes greedy and chose to over price it and she got so much backlash she was forced to drop the price. Her and Alfie are toxic to the youtube community and scam there fans

It's amazing, the major divide in the UK KZbin community. You've got the "KZbin Boy Band" gang & friends then the more artistic group (Dodie, Jack-n-Dean, Chewingsand, etc). The first group with good(ish) looks only make videos as advertisements for their own products and the second actually makes quality videos and merch. I honestly don't understand how one is more popular than the other -_-

what're the thoughts on Dan and Phil? I feel like they straddle this KZbinr "line". They're massively successful, have plenty of merch, hold liveshows, and hang (hung) around the same crowd; on the other hand: they do livestreams and MnGs, ambassadors for mental health and the like, tastefully (imo) plug their merch, have good reviews of their interactions with fans (don't know how reliable that is lol). Your thoughts?

1998sims What about the fact that Phil made the 7 second Challenge and no one gave him credit for it, that was disgusting because that was his thing

I know they are basically irrelevant to the whole hello world drama but Dan and Phil are two big youtubers who do free live show/broadcasting things every week :') x

This needed to be said. I think the bigger youtubers believe they are beyond criticism and anybody who dares criticising them are faced with a mob-mentality backlash that appears to have the intent of intimidation. But I there’s some things that you didn’t touch on that are important: - Josh Pieters stated that he hopes that he never has to criticise people to make money on twitter, clearly aimed at you. He’s friends with Willne who does exactly that, but that’s fine by him because it’s not aimed at him or his friends. He also stated he’s a fan of Idubbbz content. He needs to get off his high horse because he’s just looking really salty and unbearably sensitive at this point. - The fact that things can go wrong at events is unavoidable. Although they have a moral and legal obligation to mitigate these as much as possible, circumstances can alter. It was poorly organised and the intent appeared to be to cram as many people in to maximise profit. That’s fine, it was a first time event. However, what I find indefensible is the fact that no youtubers have apologised and have retaliated really negatively to those whom did not have a good time. This speaks volumes. It’s not about the fans, never was. This situation could have been handled much better if they apologised and displayed actual remorse but these self-righteous, self-serving, ego-driven arseholes aren’t capable of this. - There was a tweet by a Saudi travel writer, Jana, I believe about how her face was used (as one of the two ethnic people on the lineup) but it was clear that she was only there for the sake of diversity and wasn’t even able to do her show. They didn’t care or acknowledge her existence, she served a purpose.

also alfie deyes tweeting that he 'didn't get paid to go to hello world' yet doesn't go to any other events such as sitc where he doesn't have stakes in the company running it....

Wtf do these big KZbinrs have to offer on a live stage anyways??????
@MissDisneyDream7 жыл бұрын
The sad thing is there are always going to be 12,13,14 year olds who will go to these events no matter what and will always be brainwashed. 🙄😫😒 they will never be changed because they have a crush on a KZbinr that isn't even a real man, just a boy with a lisp.

what I find the most irritating is the fact that they were selling it as an immersive experience and like nothing else and that they were creating it because of the safety issues in events they used to go to yet none of this was improved?? it also started out being just a few creators and all of a sudden people were attending who seemed to have just been invited to go last minute because they are friends with Zoe. They constantly said afterwards they made no money from it, fair enough for some, but then why were there loads of rooms set up full of Zoe's winter collection and book signings?? They also said it was never supposed to be a meet and greet but they are always selling it this way, surely they should know by now that this is always one of their major criticisms yet never seem to do anything to change it. AND THE CRINGE OF THEM ALL DANCING ON STAGE NO ONE HAS PAID £100 TO SEE A FEW PEOPLE BOP ON A STAGE, INFURIATING!

I went to HelloWorld and honestly randomly met Alfie, Zoe, Poppy and Sean after. It just made me realise that they are nothing special really, just people like you and I who put their lives on the internet. Their ‘talent’ is talking to a camera all day. Definitely time for a new wave of youtubers!

I think in general youtubers shouldn’t be so over glamorized, even a new wave wouldn’t change much, even if there are good newer youtubers once they get money and want more they all end up like this
