The talk and philosophy behind the real transformation that a small country like Zim has. We may have to work from one community to another instead of expecting the country leader to bring that and in any case we know there has to be an opportunity for the system... of-which our fellow communities cannot risk. I do believe that since diaspora and the local communities are reading this its a measure for difference to start. Its an effort which each zimbabwean has to do by a stop to focusing on individual success and rather communion which has a high value and longer life. This will operated and maintained by community as a private entity (registered and member recorded). This may change one block to another and stop waiting for the government.

Excellent monologue, Kandoro. The thing is, arts and sports can only thrive within a vibrant economy in which people have disposable income to spend at a level that can make art and sport viable for artists and sportspersons. Actually, a rising tide lifts all ships and so a vibrant economy simply makes life better for everyone, artists, sportspersons, teachers, and even refuse collectors. Everything starts and ends with the economy. Furthermore, the lack of institutions that cultivate excellence in non-academic disciplines clearly presents an opportunity, a gap which is there to be exploited. The private sector can readily enter into this wide open space. Privately owned sports academies and art schools (and vocational training schools as well) can really take off now that there is an awareness that there is great value in these areas. We as Zimbabweans need to realise that the private sector is the key to this, and indeed to all our problems. And we need to disabuse ourselves of the notion that private sector is synonymous with expensive. There is no reason why entrepreneurs cannot set up facilities that are affordable and accessible. it just requires creative thinking. All the state needs to do is create an environment in which there is good incentive for people to pursue non-academic endeavours. One last thought. The value of the arts and sport is grossly underestimated. Artists stimulate thought and conversation in ways that accountants, engineers and doctors can never do and sportspersons can unite a nation and fill people with a sense of community and national pride. Clearly the arts and sports can and should be attractive to our best and brightest because they are what most readily reflect and speak to the wellbeing (or lack thereof) of our nation Keep the discussion going

Thank you for the great work Madhorofiya, you're absolutely correct about the need to cater to the artistic and athletic pupils. This is true in many countries. In SA people like Casper Nyovest quit school but are successful music entrepreneurs and even a somizi didn't go far in school ut was a brilliant dancer that choreographed the 2010 world cup opening ceremony. In SA arts such as drama and dance are optional some schools if even available. Such talents are not catered to. I know Caiphus Semenya and Leta Mbuli approached the SA government on this need to `teach` music in government schools but the issue has not gone far, like many other ideas given to them by many people but has not been implemented. Would Casper have quit if his school catered to his talents? Then there is the business of entertainment that still needs to be taught. Somehow we want to have musicians and music industries that compete with the USA for instance but in the USA they teach music in schools. Even Pharell Williams was taught how to play instruments by a school teacher, the same goes for r kelly and Ray Charles. Even Maurice White, the founder of Earth wind and fire learned music in school and further went to a tertiary college that specialized in music to learn music. The others were trained in US churches but the choir conductor or piano player had probably learnt in school. The same applies to acting and maybe sports. In SA there are a few but not enough schools teaching to cater to the artistic pupil, some even expensive. JR , Zakes Bantwini and Black Coffee studied music in tertiary and some tertiary institution offer such programs in SA, but government schools are losing talent by not nurturing those learners. Do we have enough Afdas? we need to do more a basic education as well . We thus lose such industries' gross product. Apart from the music they still need to teach the business of such arts! the same applies to all arts, drama , dance, even sport. in SA the R150 billion size of the music industry could be more if we were better at developing our country. I agree with your message fully.

the issue of extracurricular activities is something that we are lacking behind. I got to appreciate thwir importance thanx to my highschool where sports were mandatory and they offered a wide range of sports. We also had interhouse competitions in debate , public speakinf etc... i think schools should adopt such a model to encourage students to participate. Also something need to be done for those with potential to go beyond school level. its not just about learning maths, science and english. We need a holistic approach to education to build a complete person
@lekis59753 жыл бұрын
@Arnold Bunya are you from Zim as well? In Kenya we had interhouse and Interschool competitions in drama (3 categories; a play; dramatised verse (poem) and dramatised(dance). For the large provinces, the Interschool competitions took place from divisional level right up to the Nationals. Nairobi is a small Province so we went straight to Provisionals. But in the other Provinces the schools had to bsttlr it at Dibisional Kevel to get to Provincials, then battle it at Provincials to secure a place at the Nationals, by the time they got Nationals they were primed to bring their A game. 2nd Term was Public Speaking and Music festival season as well as Science Conference. 3rd term was athletics. All this from bog standard govt schools. Fast forward years later, I'm leaving in the UKand my daughter is enrolled in govt schools. The stories I could tell?! In the UK govt schols (Comprehensives) do not encourage inter house or inter school competitions. And even when they come together, there is no passion, pride and it's clear the preparation is lacking. On the other hand the FEE paying schools (Independent schools and Public schools (ie Public schools) take extra curricular activities very seriously! The foundation I received in Kenya stood me in good steed and trained me to appreciate excellence. I made sure my daughter excelled in everything she did (violin, piano, voice (choir), acting (annual school musical), Model UN, Maths UK challenge, Summer STEM programmes. I had to pay through my nose for the instrument and voice lessons. I also had to stay on her to prep for Model UN and Maths UK challenge. I went in search of the STEM summer schools on my own. Moral of the story? Sometimes as a parent you have to go the extra mile. Me? My dream is to build performing Arts Centres for govt school students in.Nairobi. The students have the desire to learn new things, and most importantly they take pride in their own archievements...which is less than you can say for the priviledged spoilt brats in UK comprehensives. They have it so good but do little with what they have. That said, in Africa, parents need to do more. The govt does not have money to fund these things, what between a narrow tax payer base and corruption....

You've made a solid case for comprehensive education reform and support the idea, we do need to address that disparity. There should be an investment in the extra-curricular from private parties as well I think. At least it could open them up to the talented and less fortunate but then money will always reign and even if you're good you won't progress without a little financial quid pro quo... Check out the juniors in rugby and cricket... And I guess it's why most underprivileged people don't invest in extracurriculars at the end of the day. It's less about talent and about luck and privilege. Some don't get to see their investment pay off. Academia offers a safety blanket that the skills, even without formal employment, and some creative thinking, you could very well salvage some sort of living and even success, however delusional that sentiment maybe...

The big clubs in arts and sports are owned by the the extremely wealthy. These people who own extreme wealth became wealthy through education. We might be at a place where we still need to build enough wealthy individuals to support sports and arts. Sports and arts are very important, but economics etc matters even more for the sustainability of a country. We need to create wealthy individuals that can support arts and culture. It’s a chicken and egg situation unless we are hoping to export the talent so they can earn well, and create opportunities for others. Of the talent that has been exported, how many have come back to help pull others up? When an economy is suffering we have to priorities. Unfortunately the cuts starts with sports and arts in education. Physiotherapists know this too well in healthcare etc.

No doubt Zimbabweans have a good primary, secondary or higher education to be emulated as well as a good English proficiency while ours in SA was interfered and messed up by the Afrikaners when they took power in 1948 and the ANC has dismally failed to rectify that. But how does Zimbabwe measure up as far as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and accounting (STEM[A]) is concerned? As that is how you rate the overall standard of education of a country! In Africa we have a sickness of taking the proficiency in a foreign language as 'good education'! I also like the introspective approach of this Zimbabwean brother in discussing the state of education in Zimbabwe or of Zimbabwean!

I think SA education is superior to that of Zimbabwe. The biggest propaganda in African history was this assumption that Zimbabweans are the most dedicated. This has been based on what? When we consider stats, aver since poat 1994, SA continues to outshine almost all African countries with exception of Mauritius. SA universities perform better than all African universities
