Two things to add to the melee attack of the bow that make it much more viable: 1. It adds whatever coating you have on your arrows without using up one. So if you have sleep coating, you can put the monster to sleep with your melee attacks and it doesn't take up the coatings 2. It does slashing damage, which can be used to cut tails. Useful if you are soloing and need to cut a tail

Joel Reyes not anymore in my opinion, with the addition of the charge blade (seriously, blocking attacks, dealing butloads of damage AND K.Owing monsters?) and the glaive ( oh dont mind me, im just glowing gold, unleashing all manners of hell, healing myself and mounting for days).

While I admit the other weapons are good and have better damage (glaive being op from personal experience). I still think out of all the ranged weapons the bow is the most practical of the bunch. In my opinion if you plan to go range the bow is the best option. The charge blade is also great but on faster monsters it's a little harder to land the full powered axe combo you'll most likely land it 2 or 3 times when the monster is knocked down. I personally use the glaive switch axe and charge blade and still show love for my bows since I played them since MHFU.

Joel Reyes Its all a matter of preference. If I want to use ranged for solo or double play I will use a bow (end up taking way less damage than blade master at the cost of a few minutes longer hunting), but I prefer heavy bowgun in groups of 3 or more. Insect glaive is strong but far from OP some monsters are a bit more challenging than others to gather your buffs from, I can take things down with a great sword much quicker. However (probably because its new and shiny) I still end up using insect glaive quite a bit in solo play.

Sorry if it is contained in the comments below and I've missed it, but it might be worth mentioning with a coating applied that pressing A to do the swipe attack with still have the status effect of the coating applied without using any of the coating (i.e. Paint coating applied, you can hit the monster, successfully paint ball the monster without using up any of the phials). Not greatly important, but useful nonetheless. Other than that, love the videos, very helpful!

As a team focused bow user i have to add that the most important type of bow coating is sleep coating.When a monster asleep he takes a huge bonus damage From the next hit he takes! if you have a team mate with a great sword you can tell him to charge atack for the bonus damage, or you can simply get your team to spam large bombs.Second most important is paralizys, same deal as sleeping only the bonus is not so great, but everyone can atack in a frenzy speacialy good to chop of a tail or break a given part of the target.Now for damage dealing! Poison will do a ton of damage passivaly after a few hits, combining poison with power shots is key for optimal dps. In cases monster are resistant to poison bows lose alot of their potential dps. Bows are great for a support row, but if you plan to solo or deal more dmg its beter to use a gun with plenty of explosive type shots and capability of full auto elemental shots, sleep shots will still be important in this case two. For a begginer bow user this tutorial is good, but has some wrong priorities!Since you can use a bow that does not have a power shot! but you should not use one that does not have at least 2 of the 3 effects: paralizys, sleep and poison.

I don't see too many bow users online. I'd like to use one but ah remaking gear again being that I'm still low level and lazy, eh. Seems more beneficial as using healing shots could help a group but most groups I find own every monster we meet. But again, I'm low level so it's not hard to pull and easy win.

I noticed that the C. Range coating had an green bar over its name. does that have any effect on the arrow, like how the bowguns would have special shots that they could rapid fire or crouch fire? I'd love to know, if anybody else does. Thanks for the advice.

Hey there Arekkz, looking for some input from you or anyone else who cares to take a moment. I'm a new player to the MH series and will debute in MH4U, I'v got a few mates that will also join in so that we'll get a 4 man party (hype!) So onto the theory crafting: I plan to go ranged seeing as the other folks in my party will go melee and it seems as though a cluster of people can become a burden to the group as a whole. Choise 1 made. Then there was the option of the 3 weapons. Reading up on the wiki, the very first sentence, says this about the bow: "Although it is very versatile and has a wide range of options, it is not the weapon of choice for an amateur but rather a weapon of choice for a skilled hunter." This scares me as a beginner. Since you recommend starting with the bow, if planing to begin a career in the ranged field, in the video above, to say I'm confused is an understatement. Help me clear a few things out pretty please?
@ArekkzGaming
@ArekkzGaming 9 жыл бұрын
Sure! I think personally, one of the main reasons sites say the Bow is hard to master is because getting that distance right is so important. If you are new to it, and you stand further away then you're missing your critical distance. The reason I say it's good is because, if you come from melee weapons, then the bow is somewhat more of a natural progression than a bowgun, simply because, depending on the bow, sometimes you won't be too far out of melee range. Personally, I'd not worry about it being "more for skilled hunters" and just pick it up and try it - that's how all players found the weapons they liked, just play with it and see if it works for you - if it doesn't, you can find an alternative :)

Yrriah ^ Yea from someone who has done the transition from melee to range, Bow are the easiest to pick up and get down, because of how mobile you cna be with them and how you only need to worry about "coatings" and range. The light Bowgun is the next step of difficulty but still relatively easy to pick up too, then there the Heavy Bowgun which is harder to master and my weapon of choice out of the three ranged. :)
@Yrriah
@Yrriah 9 жыл бұрын
Rogue Cheney So... I ain't touching the heavy xD got it! ;P Anyways, a thought pop'ed up, isn't the troubles of hitting the "critical range" the same no matter which range option you choose? As in: Shouldn't the light bowgun be the easiest of the 3 since it also shares the same trouble (of hitting the right spot) but does not have to think about coatings? As Arekkz said, I'll just have to try the options out!
@lordgrin4917
@lordgrin4917 9 жыл бұрын
Yrriah It all comes down to skill level, Bows are like the sword and shield of the range weapons, they do lowish damage but can be very helpful in a hunt because of being able to put statis effects on mosnter faster, light and heavy bow guns don't really have crit range unless they change it. As for heavy and light bowguns, it really comes down to what you skill level is and which one you like more. Heavy is alot slower and harder to master but it also does the most damage and carrys the most bullets, it also has turret mode which makes it even stronger, light is usally the starter to get into using bowgun but alot of people stick with it because of it mobility but it also does the least amount of damage.

I have a question I can't find the answer to. Is using the arrow volley stronger or weaker than standing at optimal range and firing a three charge shot? I use volley more often but I think I shouldn't be.
@Myrope

Bishop Lockard I'm not sure either, but in my experience, my damage output seems better when I'm doing charged shots from optimal range. I think the arrow volley might be better if your intention is to cause status effects or to KO the beasts.
@danijelnikolic1
@danijelnikolic1 9 жыл бұрын
well not entirely true. charging up the bow CAN create stronger shots but it doesn't have to. I've startet a new safe recently to approach bows from scratch and encountered a couple bows that simply leave you with a choice upon charging. For example *first charge-spread2 *second charge-speed2 basicly close or ranged. or my latest recovery gora malaga bow *first charge-pierce2 *second charge-spread3 charging the bow doesn't automaticly result in better dps but strongly depends on the bow you use and ends up beein a tactical choice most of the time. choosing your shots upon the situation is the one way to mastering it.
@claire6452
@claire6452 9 жыл бұрын
+CoolD Doesn't matter what type of shot you're getting, there's a damage multiplier based on the level of charge. So in your first case you win more by getting into position for the later one, than shotting the first because you're too close . So nop, mastering it is being able to be in the best position, always, or getting to it while charging. That's how you have the best dps. You don't chose your shot based on your position, you take your position based on your best shot.

bow charges dont work the same as great sword charges. yes, they are in general more powerful than not charging, but this is not always the case. when you look at the stat pages for each individual bow it shows the shot type for each level of charge which varies from bow to bow. in some cases a later charge level will fire the same type of shot as an earlier charge. so what type of shot shot you want to fire (rapid, pierce, spread) dictates how much you want to charge it, for example the Podwing Bow Unibeetle charges go P3, P2, R4, S4 (according to the wiki) in this case it would be more advantageous to fire the bow without charging it to get the level one pierce 3 charge than to wait for the pierce 2 charge, particularly against a long monster. though rapid or scatter 4 can be more worth it depending on the circumstance at hand also if i remember correctly, wide and focus type arc shots can inflict ko damage if they strike the head
@Azurus
@Azurus 9 жыл бұрын
that's both right and wrong, generally higher level charges inflict more hits, but their damage is based on the tier of the charge. A pierce 3 charge 1 does 4 hits at 50% damage, but a pierce 2 of charge would do 3 hits at 75% damage and generally be doing more damage. (not exact numbers, but the principal applies.)

Would be cool my orcus sagittus (Zinogre) could do that change :P Question, the bow i'm using, on the third charge shot it says Pierce. Do i have to be in a certain range for it to do maximum damage?
@Myrope
@Myrope 9 жыл бұрын
TygeneFox12 That's correct; there is a certain distance from the enemy called "critical distance" where the screen will shake upon impact. That would be the distance you want to be to do maximum damage. :) That distance will depend on various factors, but generally it's about 2-3 hops away for Pierce.

Which do you recommend? Arc or Power shot? I never tried Power shot bow before. Coincidentally, all the bows I liked based on affinity/slots/coating are all Arc shot bows. I've experienced all three different variants of the Arc shot and I'd like to add here that the Blast variant is sometimes shunned upon if you're hunting with others. I can blast them off their feet and screw a good opportunity for them to dish damage to trapped monsters. I'd personally recommend Power shot bows for beginners. Also, bows fit well with sleep-bombing builds.

Claire If I was looking for damage, I'd pick LBG over Bow, a slight decrease in mobility over great options for damage. I think Bow is more like a support weapon, so I only use it for elemental/ailment approach (spread shot comes in handy here.)

i like those tutorial. but on 4:40 isnt the "calculation" wrong? your example: a normal hunt takes 20minutes and on another hunt i do 50% more dmg its not a 10 minute hunt (that would be a dmg increase from 100 to 200% (a 100% increase)) it would be a ~13min-13.5min hunt. It seemed whenever I tried killing smaller monsters that I could not target, my arrows just flew right over there head, and they always ran up to me and interrupted my aiming when I actually tried aiming with the R button. Aldmeri Dominion not that useful,I know but it does help considering the fact that aim should be exclusively used to target one big monster. Everything else should be done with area attacks and normal attacks when there's a bunch of monsters. you just have to know the range of normal attacks and things become easier. This video talked about this and it's really useful info. Aim mode does look so cool though,I use it often😊 but it takes more time to finish off a bunch of monsters this way.

Aldmeri Dominion personally (I've started a new game with bow), I use always the aim, not the melee attack, but it can be effective to small monsters, the problem is where there's the big monster and his little ones at the same time, there I like to use an full range attack, you start aiming then you press A :P it attacks all the monsters on the red circle :P I hope this helped

I feel really tempted to use this on Solo Offline, but a lot of people have been telling me that it's the same thing as asking for death apparently xD

+Geared Cookies It's really not that bad. Since you're starting with it you'll need practice to get attuned to it but after that it's easy pickings. Gotta say though the bow special is a great feature. If I could make it to HR9 in MHFU with a bow, you should be just fine.

can you go solo with a bow? im playing x right now and i can't even kill the great maccau with it, it's almost like if it i weren't hurting it at all, any advice?

What kind of coatings are you using and what arc type is your bow? Wide is better for applying status effects like sleep, focus is great for targeting certain areas or firing along the monster, blast is good for single hits or heavily armoured monsters. You can solo with a bow I ended plesioth in village quests.

actually i got better when i changed into aerial style( im playing generations btw) it's easier to dogde attacks and it does more damage when you mount them even with the bow lol

my mom bow is so strong that you can go solo against every monster of the game, also the online version. you can't kill the great maccao because you're probably not using coatings, not respecting the critical distance, and not charging the attacks, without these things you'll do 1/10 of the regular damage of a bow

What type of shot does the bow in the demo shoot? It's not the same as spread in the full game, but I'd like to know, as it looks rather powerful.

Is it possible to solo with the bow/bowgun ? And is it hard to adapt when you never played it ?
@KTKompa
@KTKompa 9 жыл бұрын
It's not so bad, it still follows the same principle as when you're using a blade. The difference is that you're much more susceptible to heavy damage than a blademaster, but you make up for it in variety of status ailments depending on the bow/bowgun. As a bow/bowgunner, you need to be aware of where you stand and how far away you are from the monster to properly react to their attacks. The principle of dodging still remains the same, it's just a matter of distance between you and your target.

id say that beginners should do light bowgun rather than a bow just because the bow is hard to use and aim.

I don't think I'm using the bow properly, even if I'm following all of this knowledge... is it possible that the bow is just not enough to kill some monsters? do I need to change my weapon to defeat it? Because I refuse to believe that the bow is not meant for solo hunting, I must be doing something wrong!

Ciro I was a blademaster for a long time, then I tried bow, man listen to me, once you get expert you won't back blademaster, gunners have low defense it's true, but they haven't to worry about sharpness and that weapon bounces, it's a lot easier to hit weak points of the monster because you can aim, and break some hard monster's parts, and you have a lot of more openings to hit instead of blademasters, but of course if you are skilled it doesn't matter which weapon you use, you will break monster's ass whatever XD
