Ajax soldiers were guards. Guards aren't known to be great soldiers. They're military but they're basically from recruits to Sergeant.

You can see in the newest trailer that have Renoir and even his own men are just regular soldiers. Elite Soldiers itself IRL are just the ones that do sabotage, black ops, some behind cover works, and go behind enemy lines without backup & were expected to survive.

You send the expendable there instead of the elites, because sending the Elites is like sending a scammer free money. Also the fact that you mentioned the Soviet Guard of Red Army are laughable, because they ended up becoming instructors or Soviet higher-up guards instead of joining the skirmishes.
